Then today I rang Orange to give them the 30 days notice as required from the MAC code being used (I think it must have been used for Sky to change me over??) (I know i'll have to pay the 30 days)and I informed them that I had changed with a mac code. Orange said that because Sky had not told them I had changed and as they had not told Orange they had used my Mac code if I cancelled now I'd be subject to a connection/disconnection fee of #18.50 from orange for not using the mac code? they also said that Sky may be in the process of telling Orange and it could take up to 14 days for Sky to tell them? this means Orange they are getting another 14 days payment out of me for nothing at all this can't be right can it? I AM NOW WITH SKY BROADBAND I HAVE BEEN SINCE YESTERDAY - SURELY THEY MUST HAVE USED MY MAC CODE OR WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO TAKE OVER MY BROADBAND?? I have emailed Sky to ask them to help sort it out and await a response.BUT ANY ADVICE APPRECIATED AS I KNOW PEOPLE GET MUCKED AROUND WITH ISSUES LIKE THIS AND I WANT IT SORTING MANY THANKS ALL HAVE A FAB WEEKEND HENDRIX

Identity Theft and Irresponsible Lending

Whilst I appreciate that identity theft and subsequent fraud is increasing hugely I find it very annoying that it seems to have opened up endless opportunities for Banks, Credit Agencies and even websites to further (financially) exploit victims and potential victims of identity theft. For example, my bank is trying to sell me identity theft insurance; Moneysupermarkets.com is suggesting in its lead advice on this subject that I pay a monthly fee to a credit rating agency to check my credit rating. Can you advise me what statute (law) exists in the UK which will make me guilty (of breaking the law) or liable in any way to anyone if a fraudster passes himself off as me and a Bank, Credit Card Company etc lends him money which they don't repay? In my opinion, if you are a victim of identity theft and a Bank or Credit Card Company lends to the fraudster, then you should have recourse under the law to claim against such Bank for any costs you might incur having to put your credit rating back in order. Let us be honest, it is more difficult to open any type of savings account with a Bank (because of Money Laundering regulations) than it is to get a loan. Why? .....well banks make more money out of lending and insurance products. In fact they make so much money that they can afford not to ask too many questions. If they can't recover their losses from victims of fraud (which they will make every effort to do), then they will sell them an insurance product which will at least give them a nice income to offset against their fraud losses...which if I'm not mistaken can also be set off against their corporation tax liability! The only reason why Identity theft flourishes is because of the Banks and other lenders....they urgently need to re-write their business model and lend responsibly. The Government has a responsibility to educate and legislate.....Moneysupermarket.com should champion the financial consumer and urge its readers to write to their MP's, Councillors local press etc about irresponsible lending

Will i take my LLU problem (unable to open websites) with me.

Jason. I have been unable to open web pages for 8 weeks,i'm with Orange,it started when they did an upgrade,i understand it was a LLU.I have been told i will receive my mac code in 5 days. If i move to a ISP providing or using LLU will i have the same issue i have with Orange, they have been unable/unwilling to fix it. I'm not technical so i suppose i'm asking this.Orange have done an LLU on the line, there is obviously a problem because since this was done i haven't been able to acess web pages,i'm here because i've subscribed to a dial up connection. So if i move to another LLU ISP,will they inherit the problem that is on the line and have to fix what Orange have not been able to fix or do they start from scratch and do their own LLU. I have been advised by one none LLU ISP i have contacted, that if i joined them i would have to pay a connection fee because BT would have to return the 'phone line to its original state and they would have to pay BT for doing this. However this month I have had emails from them every day saying I am going over the allowed 50GB useage and as they charge an extra £2 per GB my latest invoice is for £130 and states have used over 100GB this month. They have checked security and changed my password and assure me no-one can tap into my broadband. It seems an excessive amount to be using, the only difference in the last month as far as I know is that I brought my son a Mac and he spends quite a bit of time streaming and downloading films programmes from his Pc but has always done this and never used this amount before. I still have 6 months contract left with madasafish so would like some advice. Also could you please recommend a broadband provider that actually provides total unlimited downloads and/or uploads. Any info or advice would be appreciated as i cannot pay this bill and have cancelled my direct debit. I left that flat before I had a new property to stay at(I went back to live with my folks for a month). I told bt of my circumstances, that I was leaving my current address and didn't have a new one but i was happy to pay for the service until i did. They would not accept this and I was told to place an order of my BT package to be moved to my parents address for a time period say of 8 weeks and then cancel this order and move the package to my new address(when i got it). This was the only way they could keep my contract within it's terms and save me the cancellation fee. I'm fine with this bit, it's a bit crazy but if it saves me the fee who cares. So I moved into my new flat on the 6th of nov, BT setup my phone line within 2 days. I was told that 5-6 working days after the 8th my bt broadband would be turned on and a further 6-8 days i'd have my BT vision turned on. Well it's been three weeks . I've placed the order for my services to be setup three times now and each time the activation day comes and nothing happens, I recieve no phone calls from bt at all and when I phone I keep being spat around departments until finally someone has to deal with me. Every time I phone i'm told my broadband order has been cancelled, once because they didn't know what address i stayed at although i've told them a good half a dozen times. The next time they didn't give a reason. The order was just cancelled. I'm fed up of this, I told the operator at BT that I understand it's not his fault but this attitude of "sorry sir, someone was meant to phone you" and "you will have to wait a further 5-6 days" for my broadband is not good enough. I also explained i could of gone to sky three times now and setup sky and broadband in the same time period it's taken them to mess it up. I'm willing to give them one more chance to set up my services, and have been told it will be done by tuesday next week. Although I can't see it happening. What are my options to escape my contract(which runs out in dec 2009) on the basis that they are not providing my with the service I'm paying for. Also if i can get away from this contract, what problems will this create keeping my line rental for another provider to provide the internet to my flat. I'm a part time web developer and depend on the internet for a good chunk of my income. Thanks, Luke

What happens to my e-mail address?

First of all, terrific site! The service is OK, but getting a 2M line while living next to the exchange is really not ideal (my friend tried to upgrade to 8M and Tiscali failed to upgrade the line, with broadband outage for 4 weeks.) Reading from various post from other forum, it is advised to inform BT and migrate the line back to BT first without telling Tiscali, to avoid BT reconnection fee and longer down time. So I went ahead and used my Name and my friend's tiscali telephone number to migrate back to BT. Everything is going fine - The line is migrated back to BT after two weeks, and now I can dial 150 to reach BT. The strange thing is that, the line is migrated last Saturday - but the internet is still on (my router shows that the ADSL line has been connected for 27 days). I am here typing with a Tiscali ADSL on a BT line, wondering why the internet is not down?? (I have powered off my router and disconnected from the phone socket for half a minute.) So, my question is, 1. How do I check if our line is available for new ADSL order? 2. The post http://www.moneysupermarket.com/COMMUNITY/forums/t/seamless-migration-from-llu-14650.aspx mentioned about "line provision" which should take 2-3 weeks after migrating back to BT. Do we need to do this and is it O2 who I need to ask, to perform this line provisioning? 3. Do you think at any point we need to contact Tiscali informing that we wish to migrate the line and ADSL? 4. (In All), what should we do next? Thanks a million!

BT's £120 Cancellation Charge

We have just received a "charge for stopping service before term expired" bill from BT for £120! What my concern is that if we go for the sky deal 'Surf, see, speak' do we have to pay there £19 a month fee and then a BT landline connection price on top of this for the landline connection each month? Or is that included in the Sky £19 a month? If this is so would it be best to stay with BT for the whole package? A reply would be most greatful, The postcode for the appartment is PO19 1JX what would be the best deal? Many Thanks Dean

Landline contract for 9 months - student

Hey, I'm about to move into a house for 9 months and need to find a landline contract for 9 months for our broadband. I'm sure I read in the paper that there was a provider where their contract was 6months+ but i can't seem to find it now, and everyone else just as 12month+ contracts. Just managed to disconnect from BT today from our previous student house as they were going to charge us £70 if we disconnected before 12months were up, so had to wait for an extra 3months, and they said they were still going to charge a disconnecting fee! outrageous. British Telecom? More like Bloody Thieves! Can you offer any help? Apparently they could install it for my neighbor living above me but it is just too difficult to run the cable down the side of my building and to my apartment on the back side. So, I am looking at other options. From what I can tell, I need a BT line to get any other reasonable service. My flat was renovated right before I moved in and it appears there is no line whatsoever. I have accepted that I will probably have to get a new BT line and pay 125 for it. That said, I am looking for recommendations for what service I should get and through whom. I saw a previous post about madasafish, but as far as I could follow I still need to go through with the BT install first. Any help would be much appreciated. I expect I will be buying a high-end package with little or no download limits and wish to get something fairly fast. Cheers! A couple of nights ago I recieved a private mail message from someone on my friend list through my bebo account. When I clicked on the link it appeared to be a video, and being as we had both been at a party, at the weekend, a couple of nights earlier I tried to open it thinking it would be something from the party. A box came up asking me to download ActiveX, which I presumed was just an update so I continued. i never suspected anything because this mail appeared to come from a friend of mine. My computer is now infected with some viruse (trojans, spyware, worm?????). Being a total computer novice this is my nightmare. ive not got a clue how to fix this. If I buy some anti-virus software will it clean the virus and spyware off my machine and protect it in future? i havent used the computer since and am pretty terrified someone will get hold of my internet bank details etc.... Any help would be greatly appreciated! Cheers L

Broadband as a gift

Hi please excuse my ignorance im a novice with computors broadband etc,my stepfather who is in his 80s owns a laptop and very occassionaly will use dial up internet.Because he has just suffered another stroke and will be spending more time at home i had thought about getting him the internet as a christma gift,im getting told its not worth getting it unless i go for broadband, opinions please, and is it possible to buy it by the month i didnt really want to be tied into a 12-18 month contract, any ideas where i should be looking please.

landline swap & broadband set up nightmare

Please help I am rapidly getting to the end of my tether with Tiscali. My mother in law was a Talk Talk customer who only had a land line phone with them until recently. She bought a lap top and wanted to have broadband installed for the first time. After deciding that Tiscali was a slightly better package she put the wheels in motion for the changeover. That is when the problems began. She should have been connected on 13.10.08 but has not been able to use her landline properly since (haven't even attempted to connect broadband). There is no dialling tone and if someone tries to ring her they just get the engaged signal. She has briefly been able to use the phone once to speak to me a couple of days ago albeit it very crackly. Within 10 minutes of this call the line went dead and hasn't worked since. Have made numerous calls to tiscali to sort out the problem but they are worse than useless promising to call back after sorting problem but never do. We decided this morning to cancel with tiscali and go back to talk talk but this is far from straightforward. Tiscali have told us that we can't just go back to Talk Talk we have to go to BT for transfer of the line and gave me an ISP code?? BT can do transfer but it will be 12 month contract for line rental. Don't want that just want to go back to talk talk.(all talk talk broadband packages seem to include line rental). Talk talk tell me that the line needs reactivating which has to be done through the post office. Rang the post office they blamed talk talk for disconnecting the line (they're well known for it apparently) and want to charge us £110.00 for reconnection. In the midst of all this forgot to mention that at 1am & 4am this morning my mother in law who couldn't sleep due to the stress of all this, picked up the phone and both times got a dialling tone. Didn't phone anyone because of the time but come 8am this morning line dead again. Line obviously hasn't been disconnected or there would be no dialling tone I assume!! In desperation have gone back to tiscali to try to sort out line problem one last time. They have promised to phone back between 4 & 5 today. If this isn't resolved today I really don't know where to go from here. 8 DAYS WITH NO PHONE FOR A VUNERABLE 73 YEAR OLD ON HER OWN IS NO JOKE, REALLY REALLY NEED TO SORT THIS OUT FOR HER ASAP. Any suggestions would be so so appreciated. There is just so much choice out there, I'm stuck! It doesn't have to be the absolute PERFECT one, I'm just worried I'll choose a dud and then be stuck with them. We have just moved to a new flat and our BT land line connection will be activated by 8pm on Friday 17.10 at the latest. I want to be up and running with a broadband provider as soon as possible. Contract: We may leave the UK in 12 months. Therefore I want a 12 mth contract. Alternatively I could take an 18mth contract if it was cheap enough and just pay the 6 months extra if we did leave in a year. Price: If I have to I'll pay up to £20-25 a mth including landline rental. (We are already stuck in an 18 mth contract at £15 mth for a THREE mobile broadband dongle which is useless and does not work, so I'm keen to keep costs down) Requirements: 40GB or unlimited download cap (don't want any surprises). I want speed. We probably browse 2-4 hours everyday, more in the weekend, and occaisionally we both may work from home, which means we'd be online most of the day. Need to be able to email and send files, share photos, watch video online and download music. I don't have any current cellphone company alliance. And I really just want broadband. I don't need a bundle of services unless it makes it cheaper than just getting broadband. I would be so grateful for some suggestions or advice before I take the plunge! All the best, Jenny

Virgin Media Customer wants to move

Okay I've been having a few issues with Virgin Media and I want to move to a different company. I've been with BT and we had to cancel our contract with them as we went over the cap in about a week downloading a couple of drivers for my partners computer and general web browsing. So I don't really want to go with them, but I need an active BT line for other service providers. I also don't want to pay more than what I am paying now. I'm currently paying £30.75 for Large broadband, line rental, caller display and full itemised billing and the basic TV package. What companies can I go to without having to pay line rental to BT and another company.

Escaping a Contract...

Hello, my first posting to Moneysupermarket... In common with many other Pipex users, I recently received a letter informing me that they would be "improving" various aspects of the billing service, and my "package description will change slightly, but there will be no increase in your subscription price and no change to your contract term". All this to occur by 30th November 2008. It goes on to say that "After the systems change, your contract will be with with Pipex UK Ltd" (currently it is with Pipex Internet Ltd). And just before signing off, it states "The continued use of your service after the systems change will constitute acceptance of these changes." It is my understanding that one party cannot vary a contract in this way, without giving the other party the option to decline the new contract. There may well be "no change" and even some improvements to the service, but legally, my existing contract is with Pipex Internet Ltd, and it cannot be presumed that I automatically wish to enter into a contract with Pipex UK Ltd, even if the offices and personnel are identical. As I am currently 6 months into a "12 month minimum" contract with Pipex, and am keen to escape, am I correct in assuming this is a good opportunity to do so, without incurring penalty charges? Thanks in advance
