I live in a one bedroom flat and work full time. My current direct debit is £49 per month and I have just over £200 in credit. I have just been informed by British Gas that my direct debit is being upped to £60 per month. This was advised when I phoned them to ask for the credit back. I just don't understand how I can be in credit and yet now have a higher direct debit. The British Gas advisors were not very pleasant when I asked them for a full break-down. I would be grateful if someone could advise. Secondly, I think £60 a month for a one bedroom flat is really high. My mother (also with BG) pays £26 a month for her 1 bedroom flat and is in all the time and my electricity consumption (accordingly to BG) is 2.5 times higher. How can this be? I have the usual fridge-freezer on all day but this is the only electricity running between the hours of 8am and 8pm at night. The washing machine is used once a week, the kettle 2-3 times a week, the gas oven once a day. I just can't work out why this is so high. I would ideally like someone to check that my meter is not faulty so any advice would be helpful. The reason why they was only estimates was because the electric box wasnt in the flat, it was in the shop behind me which was closed down, I was unable to get any readings and rang british gas to come out and get a reading as I couldn't get 1, but instead kept flooding me with estimates and threats, I rang them on numerous occasions explaining my problem but they didn't want to know, anyway I made a small payment of £39 off the estimated of £638.32 and refused to pay the full amount untill I had the actuall bill. 4 months later I moved out, without paying the bill and aquired a different address still using british gas, since then they have passed me the old address debt to a company called buchananclark + wells which now amounts to £2146.83, I rang them and asked them how they got to that amount, they couldn't tell me. I explained my situation and they said that unless I had a meter reading there was nothing they could do, If I don't pay it they will pursue the case!! So is it right that I have to pay a bill that has been made on random figures, do I not deserve some sort of i itemization or even an explanation? what are rights?, what is the law? what will happen? any help will be much apperciated with thanks craig

Is this right???

Hello everyone. I hope someone can help. My daughter has had some problems with her gas /meter/heating. I'm not sure which is playing up or if any of them are. She have a pre payment meter and she hasn't used the gas heating all through the summer, not even for bathing , she's doing that at my house. She has been washing up with a kettle or two of water. Today she decided to use the gas heating and give my grandson a bath at his own home for a change, so she charged her gas card up with £10 and put it in the meter at 5pm today. She put the heating on and then ran GS bath. She has just checked the meter 8.30pm, just 3 and a half hours later, and it has used £1,17p is that normal? She doesn't have a bill on the meter. I hope this makes sense.

Gas & electricity - fixed rate tariffs

We have fixed rate (til Sept 2011) gas & electricity with British Gas. paid via monthly Direct Debit. Although our monthly payments were increased at commencement of the contract, we are still in debit (Gas) at this time and, with autumn here, it would seem that this debt will increase over the winter. There is a fee of approx £100 if we cancel this contract. ! asked British Gas whether it would be advisable to pay & cancel the contract and revert to their standard tariff as, being OAP's, the cost was becoming a load. They suggested that prices would probably rise overall and therefore it would be best to stay within the contract AND the debits we had would be resolved by our lower consumption over the summer (not so at this time!) As mentioned, we are still in debit with the gas anyway - so it seems probable that th monthly payments will soon be increased, which will be difficult as pensioners on fixed income! Any advice please???? What has happened is that tha tenants moved out of the property closed there account with british gas, and then the property remained empty for a year. During this time it turns out the heating must of been left on, and the estate agents managing the property must not have checked the heating. Now new tenants have moved in, and started a new account. But in the meantime a gas bill of £500 and Electricity of £80 has built up. Now British gas have decided that as no one signed up with them during this time the property was empty, and because they continued to provide gas and electricity to the property. That they looked up who owned the property "me" and created an account on my behalf without my concent and are now chasing me with debt collectors. Is this legal? Any advice or experience of this? We no longer have any contact. We shared the British Gas electricity bill, however my flatmate was the one who held the online account in her name and we both shared the log-in details to pay our half of the bill whenever it was due. I have now been living alone in my new flat for just under 2 months and no longer use British Gas as a provider and have never been registered with them. However, on the weekend I received a letter from British Gas at my current address, billing me alone for the period of March - June 2009. My ex-flatmate has no idea of my current address and we have no mutual friends who could've passed on that sort of information; is there any way British Gas can find out my address if she had provided them with my name? Even if British Gas had contacted the housing agency of the old flat to find out names, is there any way they could have found my current address? The reason I ask is just because if it's possible at least I will know it's not my ex-housemate causing trouble as she's known to be a bit of a trouble maker and she's done similar to her ex-housemates too. The bill is for an amount that would've been shared, and I can't afford to pay it alone and I'm worried that because they've just addressed it to me, it's all my responsibility in their eyes. I will happily pay what I owe which, to me, seems like a tiny fraction of the bill - excluding the amount they've included for a period that we no longer lived there. I hope this makes sense, I'm all in a bit of a panic now! Does anyone know my rights? Told them to cancel as I moved houses. Not sure if payment was made through direct debit or post office. I have no reciept at this moment in time as it was a very long time however 2 YEARS LATER they have got back to me saying you havent paid. Do I have to pay when I honestly knew I paid for everything which I had to at the time when i cancelled and moved houses? Also are these procedures followed properly as i would expect British Gas to get back to me if i didnt make payment within a couple of months latest. This is 2 yrs on and now they remember to say there is a overdue bill. How outrages is that or are they just making it up? Im not to sure whats going on but I hope someone gives me an insight of what I have to do.

Boiler Cover

I currently have cover with Scottish Gas for my boiler and radiators and am paying around £17 per month. I shopped around and the cheapest deal was with E.ON, so I duly signed up to transfer. I have now have a phone call from BG saying that as I am on their Price Promise 2010 (they moved me onto this without asking me), I have to pay a £35 per supply (one for Gas & one for Electricity - £70 total) to move suppliers. Where do I stand with this? Surely they cannot move me onto a non-standard plan without my express permission? When the 2006 fix deal came to an end, should I not have been put onto the standard rate? I am, I feel, understandably livid about this and will be cancelling my maintenence contracts with them, but do I just have to swallow the leaving charges? The response from the guy calling was that I should have had a letter from them saying that if I didn't opt out, I would be put onto this new plan. I cannot remember getting such a letter, and even if I did, I would object to being moved onto a tarrif with a tie in.

British Gas Price Protection 2009

I would be interested if other people feel that they have been "conned" by BG over a fixed price deal which I signed up to, when BG must have known that the wholesale price of gas was coming down. I don't feel bound by this agreement and will look around for a better deal. I would also warn people who are signed up to a maintenance deal with BG to get an alternative quote from a local Corgi registered tradesman if you need a new boiler. I was quoted over £3000, which supposedly included a discount, and I ended up paying less tha £1500

excessive electricity bill PLEASE HELP

hello, i stumbled across this forum through google while trying to find answers to a major problem im having with british gas: this week british gas took just over £1100 from my account in what they explain as being unpaid electric charges on a flat i lived in 6 months ago. when i moved into the flat and set up the account they took all the details from me (size of property, appliances etc) so they could work out what my approximate electricity bill would be. they worked it out as £15 per month (whic later changed to £30) which i happily paid. in total then, when i had moved out of the flat i had paid them approximately £350 and they told me that account had been finalised and i thought nothing more of it. now i lived in a 1 room, 1 person bedsit. i did not use any electric appliances except the fridge, occasional stereo use, my laptop computer and an electric hob. i do not own a tv or washing machine, dishwasher etc and my heating was done by gas. over the 18 months i lived in this property british have somehow come to a figure of over £1450 in total just for electricity usage. does this not seem like an excessive amount to you? they have not been very forthcoming about acknowledging that there may be an anomaly. one of their advisors told me that the figure is based on estimates only. this is because they apparently have never gained access to the meters because they are in another tennants flat. after gaining acess to the flat this week through the landlord it seems that there are 2 different meters that are labelled to my old flat, one of which has since been relabelled in a very confusing manner. this makes me think that maybe a wrong reading has been taken over the years at some point. i dont see how i could possibly have used this amount of electricity in this amount of time! does this seem unreasonable? and also, how do i go about sorting this out? british gas have already attempted to charge me the excess £1100 which has resulted in my bank charging me a large fee for going over my limit! any help at all would be very much appreciated as this is causing me no end of stress eshea

How much?!!

Hi Folks, British Gas have advised me that I must pay them to have the gas meter checked, even though they say our consumption seems rather excessive. Surely, any reasonable supplier/business would check first and recharge later? Ha! Who am I kidding? Anyway, we rent a 4 bed end of terrace with gas usage for old but maintained boiler, gas fire used a couple of times only and a five burner hob. From moving in to last actual reading (= 236 days) we have 'used' 47,437.75 kWh at an average of 201 per day. Does this seem correct? I have agreed a payment plan to cover the cost as I don't want debt over me but now I am in the mood to look in to this and would appreciate any help/advice. All the best.

Back Dated Bills

Hi all, hoping someone here may be able to help. My wife has recevied a phone call from British Gas claiming that we owe them £200 for gas and electricity supplies. This dates back to November 2008, we live in rented accommodation and we decided that we were going to change supplier and leave British Gas and move to Scottish Power which we did. Scottish Power came out and carried out meter readings and we received final bills from BG which were duly paid and subsequent bills received from SP which again were paid. 2 months ago we moved out of this property where we gave SP our final meter readings and paid those up fully. Now some nearly 6 months later BG are coming back to us saying that SP had got the meter readings wrong and we owe them circa £200, my wife has asked them to send out all the final bills and meter readings so we can check this but BG are continually phoning her chasing the money which is now causing her distress. We have told them to send the bills out so we can review their claim but I have told them that if Scottish Power got the readings wrong they should be talking to them as anything that didn't get paid to BG has since been paid to SP and we now no longer live in the property in question. I can't see how we can owe them money when we regularly updated our meter readings online and have not had problems from Scottish Power due to incorrect meter readings. Has anyone had this problem before??

Huge British Gas Electricity Bill help

Hi Scott I have just recieved a shocking bill from British Gas saying we owe £1,482 based on latest meter reading. I am not sure where to turn. This equates to an average of 47.90kw per day usage since last meter reading. Since moving to the property in 2004 our average electrity use has been between 5-10 kw / day. We had meter fitted on 22nd November 2007 then our first actual reading after this was 18th June 2008 it was 01164 therefore 5.5kw/day. The next meter reading was 26th March 2009 14,626 therefore using 13,462kw in just 9 months or 281 days average of 47.90kw per day. Looking at meter reading today it is 14,744 using 118 kw in 11 days average of 10.73kw per day. I am puzzeled as to why we have had this surge in electricity, is there anything we can do to challenge this? I have asked BG to send someone to test meter at cost of £35. We have always been with british gas are very conservative in our electricity use we are a married couple who work full time we do not watch a lot of television, have gas hob, gas central heating, have energy saving lightbulbs, one laptop, a washer, dryer and dishwasher, the microwave is swithched off not on standby. What could have caused this? We had problem with our electrics over Christmas we have spotlights in hall that kept blowing as the transformer was gone in loft, the BG Homecare man came over to replace it as it was constantly blowing mains fuse, in fuse box it had wire fuse we had it replaced to trip switch now. Could this have caused the excessive electrity use and if so are we liable for the bill? I do not have the money to pay the bill of £1,482 debit, Britsh Gas have said they will alter the direct debit to £340 per month to pay it off but I do not have fund to cover this - can you help me I do not know what to do?
