I have just got a new house but it has no bt land line, it does have a virgin media cable conection and phone socket. Bt wish for me to pay £122.50 to install a land line to keep my contract. I could upgrade to bt vision and start a new contract without this charge, but that is not exactly cheaper. Can I cancel my contract on the grounds that they are not providing me with the service? I know with some providers you can but I don't know about BT and can't find anything definite. I only use internet never use the home phone and don't own a TV. Saturday I move to a new 1 bedroom apartment, it is a brand new building so my flat has never had a line in it before. I called BT about this and they tell me I need to pay £122.50 to get the line installed no way around it? is this true? are there any deals or codes I can quote to get installed for free? The landlord (owns the whole building) has told me his electrictions have wired up lines and a socket to every room, he has had Sky installed to the building so I can order a box and I considering doing that getting my phone line, broadband through Sky if this will avoid me the £122.50 BT installation charge in favour of Sky doing this work. I don't want TV so would never want those SKY services. Also I have heard SKY broadband is not so good and my O2 broadband has been flawless I really want to stick with it. Me and my girlfriend are moving into a new house which has a phone line coming in (no cable in our area) but when I called BT they said that the line isn't thiers and that a BT engineer would have to reconnect it at the exchange at a cost of £122 which I think is absolutely reduculous. I've got a degree in computing and I highly doubt that it costs £122 of someones time to make the necessary changes to the line (which are probably done in software anyway, rather than moving a piece of copper wire). Is there any way of finding out who the previous provider of the line was? when I plugged in a phone there was no dial tone so I cant call out to find the number either. Please, if anyone can help, let me know, we've got enough expense to worry about without paying £122 for very little. In this case fix a phone line that has been mainly dead for the last 4 weeks and fix broadband speed which has dropped from 6-7Mpbs to under 1 for no reason. Anyway, they regularly have called me up at the end of the year to ask if I wish to sign up for another year and offer me some incentive. I haven't done that since I got my free BT vision 2 or 3 years ago. Over the phone I explicitly said that I don't want anything for free and I don't want a 12 month contract, I will just pay as I go. Now I have tried to cancel because of the problems with the service they say I am under contract till December. I have also noticed a package on the phone line that I had removed after a long conversation on mis-selling with their customer service I have just noticed is still on. Bottom line question. How can you take on these companies that don't get any formal agreement of a contract and at best only phone you up to ask? How can you prove that you are not under contract when the only thing that exists is a tick on their system? I have pre-emptively sent their customer service an email saying that I do not wish to sign up for any contracts they have to offer but what can you do about the current ones? Thanks for any advice.

BT Vision

Hi, I have had a problem with my bt vision ever since it was put in, I have spent hours on the phone to technicle support, and still no luck. Sky offered me a fab deal, all was done. I was told by Sky to contact BT to get a mac code with them, for my broadband. The next thing I know I have a letter from BT saying they were sorry to see me go, but the main problem was they said I may not be able to keep my phone no, now my telephone number is very important to me, and I did not want to loose it, surely this is a form of blackmail by them. Just wonder of you could give advice on my BT case. I had a dispute with BT billings which I intend to bring to court. Previously, I’m on BT landline, Broadband and BT Vsion. I was on direct debit on my three different accounts but after a year they sent another account number for BT landline which cost £80.00. I was so disappointed so I cut all three services. I paid disconnection charge for my BT vision which is fair enough since I’m under contract. After several phone calls to costumer service I agreed to pay for the £80.00 but according to them they made a mistake on my billing. When I got my last billing for that different landline account there is an additional disconnection charge so I called again the costumer service and the guy that I spoke with agreed that it was a mistake and he wanted me to pay directly to him over the phone the £80.00 and he told me just to ignore billing and the disconnection charge. I didn’t accept his explanation and I asked him for a different billing without the disconnection charge. To cut the story short, it end up on dept collector and asking me to pay £220.00 As mentioned earlier, I wanted to bring it to court but I don’t know where to start. What is my initial step? Do I have to write to dept collector to inform that I’m bringing it to court? Should I just ignore the letter from the debt collector and wait what will happen next? Please advice. Thank you for taking time to read my post.

The worst customer service ever - BT

Has anybody experienced BT customer Service, if so I am interested in their experiences. I have recently changed my broadband provider from telewest to BT and I am still reeling from this decision. I have experienced a catalogue of errors from BT and as such have contacted their customer support team on numerous occassions only to be given the run around by being passed from call centre operator to call centre operator without any resolution to my problem. Three months into the contract, I still have not received a user name and password for free evening telephone calls, which is totally unacceptable, and is only one of a series of problems encountered. I have spoken with operators from all corners of the globe including Asia and Durham, but still the elusive corrective action has not been forthcoming. For starters, I have had nothing but trouble with BT for the last three months but it a solution has been reached - basically they overcharged me, I disputed it, they took money anyway sending me over drawn and many bank charges on top. The 'solution' was for me to pay the debt (that turned out to be right) minus the bank charges I had incurred. Due to the complete incompetence I experienced, I just want to cut off from BT and not pay them one more penny so I joined Sky. I then realised (after BT had cut me off!) that I was still paying a line rental to BT so I rang Sky and agreed to pay them for my line rental. I then get a letter from BT demanding £80 cancellation fee. How long is a contract with BT? We have been in the house for three years and with BT for that long at least. From reading on this site, I know there are 12 month and 18 month contracts but three years!?! Is it a rolling contract that I'm not aware of? I definitely haven't signed anything in the last two years at least. I contacted them to ask for more time to pay this large bill and they told me that if I didn't pay within 28 days they would charge me an extra 25% So cancelling my account is now going to cost me £310! Although I can get a £60 refund if I join them again when I move into my new property in 3 three months, this isn't enough for me to ever want to go back to them. Does anyone know how this compares with other Broadband providers?

BT phone line problems

This is a longwinded story but bear with me. I was offered a flat at the end of March so I took it. I began to organise my broadband, phoneline and Sky services. I placed an order on BT's website and was supposed to get a follow up email to let me know how my order was progressing. I never got said email so I rang BT and they said that it wasn't in their systems so I would have to try again. I then placed an order on the internet once again same thing happened. I then went to view my flat and found that the orders for both lines had in fact gone through. So I kept one and rang to cancel one. All was well or so I thought. Today I got a 65 pound bill for phone calls I've never made, for the wrong address but still in my name and with all my details. I'm not sure if it was a fault on my part when I signed up on the internet although I always check things twice when I am putting my address into online forms as I live at number 14 and my neighbour is 14A. Some of the calls were to a mobile number I don't recognise, a number for Pipex, a number in Skewen (in Wales I believe, I know no-one there) and a Gloucester number which, again, I don't recognise. Anyway, I rang BT to complain about the bill and they put me through to a guy who thought I was making the whole thing up and just wanted to get out of paying my bill. However, I have phone records from 20th April when I phoned up to cancel the phone line that I have now got the bill for. I'm not exactly sure what I can do about it. I have closed the bank account that the Direct Debit was set up on as I was moving banks anyway. I have yet to ask my neighbour about it because he is always out. But in the meantime, what do I do? I am at my wits end.

new line no MAC code

hey guys i will put this as swift as i can because i have phoned bt and got nowhere with it so im sick of explaining it :( ok i have 2 houses...one has bt line and aol BB..the other has BT lin BB and vision. we have sold one and kept the other we canceld the line and the AOL bb and now in the process of transfering the BB and stuff from the sold place when i placed the transfer the woman said i dont need to give her the mac code we got from AOL because we are moveing the line and the BB together and not just takeing over an existing line and said that the transfer will be finished on the 2nd so the line will be live and the BB will go live on the 3rd so one thing that comes into my mind is that on the AOL email that had the mac code they said that if the BB is not taken over they will continue to charge us but when and IF bt come into affect will AOL stop or will they continue because i didnt hand over the code? can someone clarify this for me or am i being short posted by BT thank you for reading

Ending a BT contract early

Hi Any advice on ending a BT contract early without paying the £300 they are asking for. I am moving house at the end of the week with no property to move into, and have asked BT to suspend my contract until I have a new address. They have refused saying that I have to pay monthly until the end of the contract or pay up front the full contract monies. This is rediculous, who else gets paid for a sevice not provided? Help anyone?

Trying to terminate my contract!

I decided to take my landline and broadband seperately 1 month before each other. Land line was fine, but as soon as my broadband connected it was reduced by 1.5mb with my final throughput being reduced by 3mb. I have been constantly in touch but sent on a merrygoround for the past 3 months. 3 engineers and oversea's customer services I am dizzy, just they way the wont to treat customers. Now I am on my 4th request for my mac code without penalty and now they wont even email me. The email contact in abit of a con, you do a online email which you have no record of and you get calls from them that you cant record. I'd expect this treatment from a 3rd rated seller like Delboy, but from BT, I am shocked. They want the full contract term of 18months before ending my contract, but I've not done anything wrong, they have supplied me with inferior service from what I was used too, thus breaking their contract to me by not providing me with bandwidth which my line is capable of.. which was 8mb+ since I am only 100mtr from the exchange. I have found their tactics disgraceful and to a point Aggresive. Why try and retain a customer if their not happy? Let them go and if your services are better than everyone else then they'll come back!! Not Likely for me! So does anyone know what else I can Do to terminate my broadband contract and keep my Telephone contract???

Bye bye overpriced BT

Left BT for the Post Office this week, so far so good. People forget that prior to BT the Post Office owned the telecommunciations network in the UK and it is to this massive investment that we owe the ability to pick up a receiver and speak to anyone in the world. The migration from simple voice to high-speed data has not been simple and with the massive competition opening up ever increasing pressures on the BT 'animal' we need a little perspective to realise just how good this company is. There are many ISPs in the UK, some of which have their own cable infrastructre such as NTL, but many are heavily reliant on the cable supplied by BT in the form of your own plugs into the house. So for me it begs the question, "Why look at another ISP when the cable is already here from BT?" The answer is nearly always financially related when you take a knee-jerk reaction to the published costs. Having serviced customers from Lands End to London and from Brighton to Edingurgh I can safely say that virtually all roads lead to BT when it comes to long-term customer happiness. AOL, Pipex and NTL to name but three of the biggest sinners in the IT world have reams of unhappy and very dissatisfied customers as well as some very frustrated IT consultants who try to help these people. You only have to read the forums to see the levels that these other ISPs will sink to before they actually DEAL with the customers in anything like a fair way. There is an old acronym in the IT World which is KISS "Keep It Simple Stupid!" and this is probably the most important message I can give you today. If you keep your ISP and your voice and the infrastructure (that's the cables and wires etc) in the ownership of ONE supplier, then (a) you only ever have to ring one person, (b) their can only ever be one person to blame, and (c) you only ever get one bill. How much more simple do you want to make it? My line rental is currently with Talk Talk as I've got a package with them(BB currently with NTL).I will call NTL before I migrate as I may get a good deal from them to keep me. Anyone know/advise if I need to revert back to BT ,if so how is it done or do Sky take care of it when you transfer to them...? After hearing about recent speed upgrades on our exchance from fellow neighbours, I spoke to BT and they bumped me up to a faster speed, and reduced my monthly charge from £15.65 to £9.99 ... RESULT! I was told at the time on the phone that this would be a new contract at a minimum of 12 months for the broadband, no problemo I said! Actually, i've decided i'd like to cancel my broadband service with BT. I have 4 months remaining, so gave them a quick call to find the exact final date of my contract, and how much i'd have to pay. The lady on the phone said i'd have to pay the remaining months charges, ok i said, so thats £39.96 (4 x £9.99) she said NO, it would be 4 x £15.65 as the £9.99 was an offer to keep me with BT. Surely, if i sign up to a new contract for 12 months at £9.99, the old £15.65 should not apply and should be long gone. Are they allowed to do this? Charge me £9.99 a month on a new contract and then say yeah but if you want to leave us, it's £15.65? Surely she cannot be right? Any advice?
