I tried the free version then for only a few pounds bought the Pro version. Since then I have monitored it - bear in mind I don't know much - and all I get from Pro is tracking cookies flagged up as a threat when they're not and can be easily deleted with say CCleaner. Occasional real threats are "dangered up" by Avira paid for which I am very happy with. I know Windows Defender isn't well thought of but it does a perfectly competent job on a friend of mine's laptop. I've reset Pro not to fire up on start up and close and it does one scan a day. No difference in result to restrictive settings earlier and laptop still seems slow to start up. Im thinking of uninstalling it. Any advice? When you switch between broadband providers the old broadband provider passes it on to the new provider and they pass it on to an engineer to simply switch your connection across in your local telephone exchange. Whilst it's not essential to have a MAC code to switch between broadband providers it makes it a whole lot quicker and easier. If you don't have the MAC code it means your broadband has to be disconnected, located by the new provider and then reconnected again. This process takes up a lot of time and hassle. A number of broadband providers have signed up to the MAC code voluntary scheme supported by Ofcom. By signing up they have made a committment to send a MAC Code within 5 working days and the broadband providers who switch the customer are committed to switching them in 30 days or less, (the MAC codes are out of date after this time anyway). You can see who's signed up here: http://www.ofcom.org.uk/advice/codes/bbm_cop/ We want to expose broadband providers who are MAC code offenders and make it hard for people to switch. Tell us your MAC code nightmares and name and shame the broadband providers who don't provide them and have caused you the most hassle or even resorted to dirty tactics to prevent you from switching, (this also includes providers signed up to the MAC code scheme as well). We'd like to create a league table of the biggest offenders and when we've got enough information behind us we're going to publish our results in the media, (if you want to be a case study then please indicate in your post). So come on then who's first? Sometimes I can deal with it, but sometimes not and I go mad. I'm mad as hell today about it....This is a very brief account of it. I live in a village in West Wales. After 4 years of patient waiting my exchange was finally enabled in May 2005 ..yippee (or so i thought). I then found out that I am on a "shared" line and there is insufficient line capacity in the village and my line is on a piece of kit using incompatible fibre optic technology (broadband needs copper lines). Now one way around this was suggested at the time by BT engineer and also sales was to order BT Broadband package which I dutifully did with the idea that BT would sort out the technical side. My order was processed and my router arrived ad on the due day I set it all up and ...nothing, nada, zip. Obviously they hadn't "fixed" the shared line. Order was cancelled appologies made etc. that was 2005. I still have the router. Here we are in May 2007 and NOTHING has changed. Engineers have said there is SPARE capacity at the exchange and I COULD be moved onto a line of my own thus enabling broadband. I have emailed complaints and requests to BT all to no avail. I'm not going to waste my breath on someone in India who couldn't give a rats ass if I can't get broadband here so in desperation I am here. The question is simple but I doubt the answer will be... How can I force BT to finally give me a line that I can get broadband on? Any help appreciated thanks... After buying mobile broadband from Vodafone and initially receiving a faulty set, it took two weeks of almost daily phone calls, plus two visits to local stores (one abortive), to get a USB and SIM card that worked. In that time I was consistently misinformed, passed around from team to team, had service commitments to me including ring-backs and deliveries not met (all clear training issues), spent literally hours in phone queues and was cut off several times. I constantly had to repeat myself (often several times per call) and chase, and no-one took any ownership or initiative. Overall it’s one of the worst examples of (lack of) customer care I’d had in a very long time and my frustration is compounded now by getting just no response to my complaints. I’ve complained on-line (no response to complaint in May despite auto-acknowledgement email), responded to two automated phone surveys they proactively asked me to complete, and written to their head office. All I want is an apology, some genuine reflection and for my contract to start from the date I actually got a working USB. Whilst my USB only works first thing in the morning and last thing at night and then very slowly, ironically I was expecting that (only a “good” service level apparently) and resigned myself to it because it's probably largely the area, but I didn’t expect an almost full-time job for 2 weeks on what should have been so simple. In the short term I’m still a customer, but I will never buy anything from them or recommend them again. NB with a 'good' service (steady green light) it's taken me 35 minutes just to log in and cut and paste this!!

BT Broadband Contract End

Hi all, just a quick one. I know that my provider will start umming and ahhing about the fact that I use wifi (from which the signal always shows as excellent) and also the umming and ahhing will increase as soon as the word skype is used. I have been in touch with skype who assure me that I should be able to have acceptable calls with this connection. I understand that you can never reach the full speed that you pay for but it would be very helpful to know what I can reasonably expect. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks.

1&1 Internet - please help- advice needed

Just over 2 years ago I bought some domain names off this company on a 2 year contract - cost me about £126, didn't end up using them - never done anything with them and no longer use the email account from which I signed up. Got a bill in the post a couple of days ago for £185 for the next two years, they have auto renewed the domains even though they no longer have a valid card and I have never used any of the domains. Help - any suggestions, I don't want to pay them £185, have been emailing asking to cancel everything but they are threatening to pass to a debt collection agency and add another £15 onto bill. I have been online through their website and now cancelled everything but as they auto renewed in June they are refusing to negotiate on this £185. Any advice greatly appreciated Thanks

Found ! After just over two weeks the unit ceased to work. After several phone calls I took it back to the shop from which I purchased it and was told that as it was more than 14 days old it needed to be returned for repair. I was given the telephone number to call T-Mobile (at 10p per minute) and after some delay got to speak to an operator. I was told that a returns bag would be despatched to me and the item would be returned for repair and that this would normally take up to 28 days. I asked if it was possible to have a replacement unit whilst it was in for repair and the shop said this was against T-Mobile policy (even though they clearly had stock and demonstration units in the store). I explained that I felt this unfair as I was being charged for a service which I had - through no fault of my own - no means to access. Three weeks passed (during which the line rental was efficiently taken from my account as it has been on a monthly basis since) and no returns bag appeared. As I needed mobile access I took out a Pay as You Go deal with another service provider to tide me over. Total cost was now approaching £200 for two weeks T-Mobile broadband access. Several phone calls via India later I was told to take the USB stick back into the shop, which I did. The shop agreed to return it on my behalf and ‘marked it on the system as urgent’. By May I had still not heard anything. The unit was variously described as ‘being tested’ and ‘on its way back to me’. My frustration was starting to show with the help desk. I had to repeatedly relay the whole story to several people on each call as they tried to help me. On two occasions I was mysteriously ‘cut off’ in the process and consigned to the back of a 20 minute (at 10p per minute) queue. In June I finally lost patience with T_Mobile. I expressed my utter outrage at the way I had been treated. The complaints' team escalated the case and investigated. I was informed that the unit had already been sent back by recorded delivery. Eventually they ascertained it had been sent back to the shop (not to my home address as I had been told) four weeks ago and was ready for collection. The shop had apparently sent me a text message to inform me of this. Problem was that without the Dongle I had no means to receive said text message. D’Oh (in Homers words) To rub in the salt the shop assistant told me that they were aware of this but there was nothing else they could do (but were happy to sit on it – marked as urgent, or so I was told, for four weeks or more). I was also given an interesting insight into what the shop thought of the helpdesk. I contacted the complaints team again and demanded that they cancel my contract. This was refused. A ‘final’ offer of the balance one months free line rental was made. By all accounts I think I deserve more having spent well over £150 per week and counting (yes, you read it correctly) for T-Mobile Broadband Access – Is this some sort of a record I wonder (perhaps you can poll your readers?). I have been five months without (and paying for) a service which I am physically unable to access due to the suppliers incompetence and no fault on my part whatsoever. I am similarly bound into a contract upon which I believe t-Mobile have defaulted. If the rumours are true and Vodafone are about to buy T-Mobile I hope they can sort them out. They certainly cannot make it worse from my experience.

Virgin & BT broadband tech help both awful or just unlucky?

I've read past posts on both here, trawled the internet and got some personal feedback. The help systems are awful because they are done by operators working with set scripts and there is no joined up thinking or indeed reading what has gone before so there is often an insistence on covering old ground quite pointlessly before going on to a new irrelevency. I said to someone in a broadband company who was of a level to know if I was talking sense or rubbish - Companies use this awful system for their benefit because they think it's cheap and try and kid customers that it's for their benefit. He agreed. RELIABILITY BEST MEASURE BUT HOW DO I FIND IT? Someone I know has had a very bad experience with Virgin & BT Tech Help but now Virgin have finally sorted things out she doesn't know what to do for the best? The best I could say was try and find out the most reliable but having looked behind "Reliable" on Google is actually the top ten best deals, for example.

Moved into a rented house that has an existing broadband contract, how do we cancel it?

We moved into a rented house on july 1st, we later discovered that the previous tenants still have an existing sky contract on the house that they say they cannot cancel till the end of august. This leaves us with no phone, internet or sky tv till then. We rang sky and asked what to do, they asked to be faxed the tenancy agreement stating our names and address and said that once we did that it could be installed for us. We did this and they then said due to rights of privacy they needed the previous account holder to cancel the contract. What can be done to canel this contract so we can start a new one and have the internet and phone?

Mobile broadband abroad

I want to take my laptop abroad to Spain (3 1/2 weeks) and wonder what was the best paid package to connect to the internet.
