I moved into my previous (MOD) property in August 2007, and set up a Direct Debit with SWALEC to pay both the gas and Electricity. I gave the correct meter readings and thought nothing more of it. I noticed in May this year that I hadnt recieved a quarterly bill for the electricity when my Gas bill arrived. I phoned SWALEC to enquire why, and they said I had a pay as go card metre. I corrected them, telling them I have a normal meter, and said that I have been paying £30 a month for the electricity. They said they had that money in the account, over £600 and would sort out the problem. I gave to two meter readings 7 days apart as they requested. On 1st July I moved out of that property and down south. The MOD faxed the move out metre readings to SWALEC. I phoned at the beggining of August to find out how the final bills were going and to set up Gas and Electricity with them again for my new property. They then said that they didnt have the metre reading for the electricity. I said it was faxed to them by the MOD, and it was strange as they had the Gas reading. Then they turned around and said the final reading was lower then the reading we gave when we first moved in. They suggested there was a problem with the metre. And would send an engineer. I arranged twice for an engineer to get access to the property, which isnt easy as its MOD and currently empty. The first time to engineer failed to show. Then it gets interesting. I phoned yesterday to find out what was happening. They said an engineer read the metre on 30th September, and we had a final bill. Which was in credit of over £600. I obviously was surprised. They told me to phone back today so they could double check and release a check to ourselfs. So today I rang..and surprise surprise, no engineer had been and read the metre..they had no reference of a move out reading for the metre. There must be a mistake. So I rang the appropriate MOD officials who luckly had an inventory of the metre readings, and they said that they remember an engineer going to the property and looking at the meter. I phoned SWALEC to inform them this, and even after receving the final metre reading they STILL need an engineer to look at the meter. After more phone calls, the MOD are now arranging to met with the engineer so he can have access..but to also prove that he did visit. Im absolutly pulling my hair out here. I feel ive dont nothing wrong, ive been paying the direct debit that I set up, I even let a man come in and read the meter for me so we didnt get estimate bills. I afraid that they will make a bill up, and that the money in the account wont cover the final bill. I feel its also unfair to be told that your going to recieve a check for £600 - £700 then told no. This problem has been going on for months, and its always me trying to chase them up. I also find it strange how theyre meter readings keep disapearing off the system. Do I have any rights here? What would people suggest to do? She lives in a 5 year old semi-detached cottage, with kitchen, lounge/diner, and 3 bedrooms. The house has an electirc "wet" central heating system and is supplied with an Economy 10 tariff from Southern Electric. At present, her annual electricity bill is in the region of £1200.00. which to me seems rather high. My questions are: Is Economy 10 the best tariff for her and if not, what would be a better alternative? Are Southern Electric the cheapest supplier for her Economy 10 system, and if not what other providers are worth considering? Grateful for any help or advice.

Winter Fuel Payments for over 60's

My husband was 60 in July and works full time. Last year I received my first bill - £600 for just 4 months electric.I live in a 1 bed flat, all electric and as I was at work, I was out the house some 60 hours a week. I was so angry at the prices, I visited moneysupermarket back in Oct 08 and npower came out cheaper (to npower) by some £450 a year! I couldnt change my tariff because I was on the standard tariff, the ONLY tariff they offer customers who move into a property that they(any supplier) provide power to - meaning that as a consumer, I dont get the best deal. The cheaper prices are only online, so if you are someone who is happy with their supplier, you are being overcharged by some £5-£10 a week when you could simply go online and sign up to a cheaper tariff by the same supplier. I am angry because this is something that they NEVER tell customers signing up. At least with companies like BT, they give you a choice whether to either telephone in, or sign up online and get a free home hub(for example) - so why cant the electric companies advertise the same way? Unless you are looking to switch supplier, you will be totally unware of the savings you could make, which can run into hundreds of pounds a year

Albion Albion the cylinder people, economy 7 cylinder, fitted with sacrificial anode

I have Albion the cylinder people, economy 7 cylinder, fitted with sacrificial anode (all electric). But since then the water is only slightly warm. Any idea what could be wrong? Is it that I am getting all stored warm water. Two electric cables come out of the cylinder. Each one enters a wall socket. Small red light lights up on one of the sockets. The LED on second socket is NOT ON. (I don't remember whether it was OFF when the water heater was working fine.) Is it that since this model uses mainly night time electricity it will take a couple of nights to heat the water properly. The water pressure is good. Can someone give suggestion, please. To give you a bit of background, we've got a pretty small 1 bed flat, and the only things we leave on permanently are the fridge and the freezer, and make sure everything is switched off at the plug every night. We are on economy 7 but we only switched the storage heaters on about a week ago. When i set my account up with the new supplier, they asked me for a meter reading, but i was unable to get one because the meter is in a cupboard outside my flat that i don't have a key for, and told them this. They set up a direct debit for £64 a month which I was happy to pay, as it was about as much as i expected (given that i used to pay around £15 a month more for a much larger 2 bed property previously). This morning I received the first quarterly statement through and was informed that i owe in the region of £850 for the last 3 months! Upon closer inspection the bill says that the start point is estimated, and the finish point is actual, which means that they have managed to get into the cupboard outside my flat and have taken a final reading, but i'm unsure as to how they've managed to estimate a bill so high. I called the lettings agent this morning to ask if they had the initial meter reading and was told that they hadn't taken one as they too could not get access to the cupboard, as the landlords had not given them a key, and told me they had informed my landlords of this and said they needed to take a reading, but as far as i can see it hasn't been done. I haven't had a chance to speak to the electricity company or my landlords as I am at work, but i just wanted some advice on where i stand regarding this, because if they have failed to take a reading does it mean I'm liable for this ridiculous bill? The whole point we moved to a smaller property was to save money so obviously this has me really worried! Thanks in advance for your help/suggestions

New Build, First Time Buyer - Utility Bills help!!

Hello, I am a first time buyer, I have bought a 3 storey, mid terrace townhouse, I am going to be living on my own initially, looking to take on a lodger in the near future. I live (own) a flat in a set of 6 flats. I have been living there for 3 yrs now. I used to switch the suppliers but did not see any difference in bill. I didnt take much notice of it. Recently a new tenant moved in opposite flat. She noted that her meter was running even when she was not in. So she switched the main supplier button off and ---- surprize- surprize- my flats electricity went off. I can only conclude that I have been paying somebody else's bills and they have been paying mine. Can anybody advice what should i/ we do to sort it out!!!! Thanks in advance TY

cost and efficiency of electric heaters

I'm thinking of buying some dimplex oil filled panel-style electric radiators (with timers) for my two bedrooms, my sitting room and my downstairs hall (I have a log burner in the dining room/kitchen). Is this sensible or should I be looking at ordinary panel heaters (with timers).. Are they equally efficient and cost effective? I am generally out most of the day so would only use them first thing in the morning, in the evening and at weekends.

£4,000 in debt with electricity help!

I moved to Yorkshire to live with my partner. In the household is myself, partner, son, daughter and two grandchildren im raising as my own. I had been living happily here for a year, I recieved my electric bill and was horrified, suddenly on my bill appeared £1,000 on top of the electric bill. I telephoned immediately, I was told that a few years previous, when my partner was with his ex partner, that a proper reading was never taken, they had now got a proper reading and we had been paying a lot less than we should! I was quite angry, I had given in meter readings for a whole year, I was then told that the meter readers take the reading but dont always pass it on to the electricity department. So I was more annoyed as I was paying towards a bill that was my partners ex too! I continued paying by direct debit, not checking my bill, my fault!, 2 years later I recieved a letter telling me that I owed £4,000 and my direct debit was going to be £210 a month. I telephoned and demanded to know what was going on. I was told that over the two years readings had been taken but had not been passed on to the company, they had just received the first, I was furious, the meter readers were taking readings and being paid for nothing!!!! Alarm bells rang!!! why was I owing £3,000 on top of the £1,000. I complained bitterly. I have had some one check my meter twice, they say it is fine, so why is my electricty consumption so high? I cant understand it. My husband works 12 hour shifts 6 days a week, my son goes to University, my daughter goes to colledge, one grandchild goes to school, one goes to nursery. There is only me at home apart from school hollidays. Is there another way I can have my bills investigated by some one else, is there another way to check the meter other than work out how much electricity is being used by a kettle? This is how it was checked, funny thing was the meter man said "sorry, I cant tell you the result" I had to wait 3 weeks for a letter! We are struggling to pay £250 a month, the electricity has told me realistically they want £450 a month. We are told we are using £150 of electricity a week. We have a tv, computer, fridge, fgreezer, dish washer, washing machine, dryer, shower, pond filter, hair dryer, straightners, iron ect all the usual things. any advice where to go next? ive had enough so we are moving home next year, bet my electricity drops!

Energy bills ‘could rise 60%’

It’s been a bleak week for bill payers. Although there may have been a spate of price cuts over recent weeks, the watchdog Ofgem has warned that UK bills could rise by a staggering 60% by 2016. It is confident prices will rise by anywhere between 14% and 25% above inflation by the end of the next decade. Why is that? Because the infrastructure requires massive investment. The body anticipates that up to £200billion is needed to meet carbon targets and to boost capacity. Many of the country’s power stations are nearing the end of their working lives, prompting concerns over future energy supplies. We recently asked you if you believe energy firms are ripping consumers off by not dropping their prices more over recent months. More than 96% of you said yes, and that bills need to come down. Given Ofgem’s recent analysis of the investment needed into the industry, do you still think bills should fall? Do you believe energy firms are making large profits but will still pass on rising costs to customers? Perhaps you think we simply do not understand the behind-the-scenes costs of generating power. Let me know what you think.

Energy saving tips?

What are your energy saving tips? They fitted a new digital electricity meter a few months ago, due to the previous meter being outdated. Swalec have now been in contact to say that they have been under charging me for the past two years, and am now liable for a catch up bill of £1300! I have paid my quartly bill on time for the past two years, and never had any issues. These bills have been estimated, and i update the meter reading every time I receive a bill with Swalec, to get an accurate bill. I also called to have an engineer come to read the meter back in June, which he failed to turn up to. He then came on another day unannounced so no one was home. So that is there fault as they failed to keep the initial appointment. I understand that by law Swalec have to send an engineer out every two years to read the meter, but as i wasn’t home he was unable to do so, although the meter is outside(so he has excess) i have to sign the meter reading off, is this correct? So it’s my fault apparently the meter hasn’t been professionally read according to Swalec. I was paying £40 a quarter for electricity for a small 2bed terrace, which does seem low come to think of it, but i am young and this is my first house, so never knew any different. I am only home in the evenings for a few hours, and am home in the day once/ twice a week. Do i have any grounds to appeal this catch up bill?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

gas/electricity comparison

I will be moving in a few weeks and will need to set up with the most competitive utilities supplier. Every site that I've been into asks for my current supplier and/or usage to make comparisons.I do not know who the suppliers are for the new address or the usage amounts. I am unable to give usage figures for my current home because I only use electricity with a key meter. So, I want to know if there is a site that I can go into that will give price comparison rates for e.g. monthly/quarterly direct debit rather than going into each individual companies website.

25% rise - on top of inflation

OK - Who thinks that energy companies have the right to rip us off any more ? With their vast profits (already overcharging us) - apparently, they need to increase our charges another 25% on top of inflation to improve their infrastructure over the next 10 years - this cannot be right and I believe that we need to fight back against these bullies ... They claim that £200billion will be needed by 2020 - I say "OK - use your present profits" British Gas (alone) made almost £2 billion last financial year !! And did this bring the costs to us down much - I think not - their managers still get huge salaries and bonuses and this can't be allowed to continue.....
