So I accessed my credit report from experian and one entry stood out. It was for a MINT credit card which had been defaulted.Looking into the matter further I found out that after I had moved address there had been a payment out of the card for £36. After I moved I thought my balance was still at £0, which it was beforehand. Since then I have been receiving reminders to my old address about this payment and then finally received the forwarded mail to my new address (first I'd heard of anything). Which I paid immediately and was settled. The account defulated after 3 months and then was stafised the very next month. The credit report states "satisfied". Now I know I should have either closed my MINT account down at the time or notified of my new address but I still feel that this mishap on my behalf is simply a mistake rather than me not being able to make the payments. As I said before I have had no late payments with any other cards or loans. Is this something that I can argue to get this default lifted from my report? Or is it something that I can only really add a note to my entry on the credit report? Also is this now going to affect me remortaging which I intend to do next year? Any advise would be appreciated.

Cashback credit cards - egg Mastercard terms

Have been comparing credit cards with cashback. The egg Mastercard offers 1% cashback on all purchases up to £20K per year. But am I understanding their 'How Interest is Charged' paragraph correctly? It appears they charge interest on every purchase from the moment you use your credit card to the moment they receive payment (if paying your balance off in full which I always do) and then refund the interest charged the following month. Also I can't see where it says how and when you get your cashback. These two things make it very difficult to calculate whether this is a good deal or not. It sounds good (and straightforward) because its a straight 1% - or is it? Can anyone clarify this?

Credit Cards, PPi and a default....

I've just received a default notice for my NW credit card. Last month I paid off my credit card when I received my salary, this was about 4 days before my monthly statement came through. This isn't usually an issue as I make sure not to pay anything with the card until the next statement period begins. However last month my PPi payment was taken out between me paying the card off and the statement being produced, giving me a final balance of £7.01 and a minimum payment of £5. Unfortunately I didn't realise this (my fault I know, should have actually read the statament property!) so now have a default (which I've since paid in my latest bill). After doing a bit of reading I've realised that I may well have been mis sold the PPi anyway so I'm going to be making a claim on this basis. My question is.... If my claim against the bank for mis selling the PPi is successful will I have grounds for getting the default removed from my credit file as it's there as a result of the PPi payment? Also... what's the best approach to take when looking to claim against mis selling of PPi? Thanks, WDC

Help!

I am currently paying my debt off through a debt management company. My bank won't give me an overdraft and it keeps charging me between £150 - £300 a month as my account keeps going in the red. I get charged this amount as the bank wont pay my direct debits while im overdrawn and i then incur fees. Then because my direct debits aren't paid the companies write to me and charge me a fee on top of the missed payment, i.e. car insurance was £29.19 but the company then charge me a £20 fee so i end up paying £49.19. I paid using my Virgin (MBNA) credit card through a third party called Guru.com who took the payments and paid the supplier direct. The project was for a total cost of £25,650 of which I paid in phase’s up to the total amount of £17000. The website was supposed to take 4 months to complete which should have been the 29th September, I raised my chargeback request with Virgin on the 23rd Jan meaning I was within the 120 day chargeback period which would have been the 27th Jan. Virgin are saying that they won’t perform a chargeback because I didn’t pay the total amount to the supplier, however I have stressed to them that they did not complete the work within the contract agreement of 4 months and that I felt I was being messed around. I even gave them a report by an independent web design company who said the site had been poorly developed and was not fit for purpose. They only ever asked for money and didn’t correct any issues I raised with the website and kept moving the project completion date out. It basically ended up with a total breakdown of communication between the supplier and I where they did not want to go back and correct issues with the website and only wanted more money from myself even though the project completion date had passed. Seeing as though Virgin will not issue a chargeback so I went to the Financial Ombudsman and made a complaint in March. Since then I have recently had a final decision from the adjudicator saying that he felt the bank was within reason to reject the chargeback on the grounds that I did not pay the total contract value, if this was the case and they had still not delivered then the bank would/should perform a chargeback. However I have explained that the supplier did not complete the website within the contract date and I felt by giving them more money and time to complete I still wouldn’t have had a complete website. The adjudicator has also explained because I paid through a third party who initiated the deal and payment were made through that section 75 does not cover me which is frustrating to say the least. The adjudicator has now said I might have a chance by taking Virgin to court on the grounds of the contract being breached. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Letters to credit card companies

Hi, Does anyone have a copy of a standard letter to send to credit card companies requesting them to freeze the interest on the card and make an offer of a set payment figure for each month!?! Now I already knew about this, however, I received a letter from Halifax last month stating I had missed a payment. I had in fact, paid it 1 day too early. I called and spoke to a very helpful guy who sympathised with my error and told me he would refund the charge. At £12 the charge wasn't my biggest concern so I asked "Will this also stop anything being noted on my credit profile?" to which he replied "yes once I refund this charge and put the reason in, it'll update that you paid for last month". Great, I thought, done and dusted and i'll have to be careful in future. Now after speaking to Halifax today to see why I have this missed payment strike they informed me that the person I spoke to should not have told me that, and 'By law' they are obliged not to remove any such strike from one's credit profile. I asked for a manager to pull the call from their tapes and call me back. They did so, without listening to the tape, only to apologise for the mis-information I was given and that there was absolutely nothing she could do. Before I move absolutely everything away from the Halifax, I have a current / savings and my credit card with them, is there anything else I can try? or anyone I could write to? Thanks in advance. So where did it all change. I managed to get planning permission to build a house within my garden, this was the time when we all watched Grand Designs and aspired to do the same. I couldn't wait to build and take this chance in a lifetime and do something I always wanted to do. I had planned to move in and turn my house into a buy to let. RBS agreed to fund the project on a build roll up mortgage, in Jan 08 it started and they would release stage payments to me and I would sort out payments to the builders and the relevant contractors. As we headed to the 3rd quarter of 08 I could sense that the builders had problems, another project they were working on were struggling to pay them. I was not sure as to the extent and a lot of it was rumour but I had always negotiated with builders on each payment anyway. Suddenly in Oct 08 RBS decided they would no longer pay me and would only pay the builders direct. I advised against this but at the same time was scared they would pull the funding for the project as it was RBS making headlines everyday as they credit crunch really hit. I reluctantly signed an agreement to pay the builders, I didn't realise at the time the builders did have a petition to be wound up against them, I subsequently found this out from companies house. This stage payment was for about £20k, this money was paid directly to the builders against my wishes even though I was made to sign the money directly to the builders or RBS would not have paid. A lot of this stage payment was needed to pay contractors, and supplies which were special orders. Consequently they didn't get paid. The contractors walked offsite and suppliers were going to retrieve the special orders. To over come this and to get the contractors back on site I had to pay them for the work already completed, also pay for the supplies and continue to fund the project ongoing. Far from ideal but I wanted the house finished, this was all extremely stressful and not exciting as it should have been in anyway. A few months later after taking control of this myself I pushed RBS for the very last payment, I didn't want them to know about the builders in case they pulled the plug. They reverted to the previous method and paid me the last stage payment, why this change I don't know. By this time my credit cards had built up and continued to do so so I could get the house signed off. I have now put in a complaint to RBS to ask why they gave the money to the builders when it is MY land and MY build if I default then they take it from me but if the builders default I suffer.. This is a David and Goliath situation they made me sign an order to pay the builders even though I have an email saying it is not a good idea. They have refused my first request for compensation yet didn't answer my question as to why they paid the builders. I will go to the Ombudsman if I get nowhere. To try and cut this story shorter - I have ended up with credit card debt of £54k two houses, and five rooms rented out to support my income and continue to fund this debt. At the moment I am paying the equivalent of over £15k pa interest on these credit cards . I have NEVER ever before this situation ever not paid of a credit card in full every month. Probably why the card companies had put my limits up so high and continued to send me credit card cheques through constantly. If I could consolodate this debt to a sensible loan or even raise £10-20k I could really push to get back on my feet rather than constantly tread water. Because the cards are now maxed no one will lend me any money, no cards will let me apply for a 0% car to transfer which will make the difference, my mortgage company will not let me borrow any more due to salary mulitpler restrictions now implemented despite good capital in my property. If I now sold the second house I would end up losing around £100k on the proposed value and this was my long term investment and end up no better off. I at least wide to ride the market crash. I was going to apply for a buy to let on completion but now lending criterias have changed they have lowered the LTV to 60% which will not help me. Every way I turn I hit a brick wall, I HATE paying these card companies 20-30% I have phoned them all up asking for a rate offer. For instance my Barclaycards £20k would really make a difference if they transferred to their lifetime balance rate of around 6% for new customers but not for a 17 year loyal customer. I am trying very hard not to go down the IVA route, I have spoken to mortgage advisors but no one will help. All I need to do is swap the debt and I could save well over £1000 pm, I feel I am now going round and round in circles I know what to do but no one can help. I don't want to go to one of these debt companies who charge me to go down an IVA route which I don't want. I can afford the debt, only just but am trying very proactively to do something about it. Also why are the cards reducing my limits as they come down this continually makes my credit score look worse. If anyone out there can offer any advice, not debt agencies I would really appreciate it. This situation is rediculous I could really speed up and reduce my monthly risk and not keep hitting my overdraft limit everymonth if I could just get a proper answer from someone. What should have been a chance in a lifetime is now a nightmare from hell. Thanks for reading this long post if you got this far, there is a lot more to it, but I would need to write a book.

Reduced credit card limit

Hi, I was speaking to a friend today and she said that Barclaycard (I think it was them anyway) reduced her credit limit from £2000 to £1000. The main areas of focus are: Allocation of payments - if you use your credit card to transfer a balance on to and for spending, you may well be charged a different rate of interest for each balance. And in most cases the card provider will use your monthly payment towards clearing the cheapest debt first. This leaves you accruing interest at the highest rate. This is known as the negative payment hierarchy and the government wants providers to change to a positive hierarchy so the most expensive debt is cleared first. Minimum repayment levels - the minimum amount many card providers require you to pay off your balance each month can be as little as 2%. But if you do this it can literally take you decades to clear your debt and cost you thousands of pounds in interest. The government therefore wants minimum repayments increased. Unsolicited credit increases - sometimes your credit limit can be increased without you asking for it. The government wants this stopped and is considering banning the practice. Re-pricing existing debts - interest rates on credit cards are vairable but there are concerns that in some instances interest rates are being increased without proper explanation. The government wants this investigated and may restrict the way firms can increase the interest charged on existing debt. So what's your view on all of this? Do you think credit card providers should be forced to clean up their act? Maybe you've been caught out by negative payment hierarchy or have seen the rate of interest charged by your credit card provider increase substantially. Let us know your thoughts. I am managing to pay the minimum payments each month by direct debit, but of course by only paying the minimum payment, the interest will be huge. I am now beginning to struggle to pay the monthly payments and wondered what my options were. I considered a loan but was turned down and am afraid that if I apply and again and am refused again that my credit rating will be really low. One of the cards is current and still usable, the other wasn't renewed.

If I do a Balance Transfer (0%-12mths) will my old card account be closed?

I have several cards I need rid off (off or of in this context???). I have just been approved for a new card but have discovered that because of the application my 'credit score' dropped a mind boggling 140 points from excellent to fair!!! I now have 5 cards with a combined balance of £259 and borrowing available of over £7k. I want my credit score reduced so I need to cut my borrowing so 3 cards got to go! Anyway I have a few Christmas purchases in mind and wondered if I could 'kill two birds with the one stone'. I know I could just make the purchases on the new card but.. If I buy using the old cards then transfer the balances (£800 tops for the 3). Would this effectively close the old accounts? Or do I have to go through some procedure to make sure these accounts are finally closed.

Turned down for new Santander credit card

My husband and I are both in our mid/late 60s. We have banked with National Giro/Alliance & Leicester for over 30years. In September we received a booklet from A&L informing us that now they were part of the Santander group, they would be using the Santander Credit Card with 3 months 0% on purchases and 12 months free on balance transfers. As we had already decided to upgrade our car, we put £2,000 on our current MBNA (A&L linked) card then applied for the Santander new card. We applied on 15th October but still hadn't heard anything by the beginning of Nov. I then rang them only to be told - quite curtly - that we had been declined. Not being able to understand the reason for this, I rang the complaints line at A&L and all our details taken. The lady was very helpful and suggested we might want to check we were on the electoral roll. I explained we had lived in our current home for 36yrs and were most definitely on the electoral role. She then suggested we try Equifax, the credit agency. This I did and could find no reason why we should be treated this way so spent £5.95 for the Credit Score. This came back as 977 "Excellent". 2 days later we received a "standard" letter from Santander Credit Card company to say "we did not meet the criteria" and although I rang them, they would not tell me what their criteria was!! My first reaction is to simply leave A & L and apply to a new building society for a new current account and credit card but having to go to all this effort not to mention stress seems so unfair. To add insult to injury, we wanted the Santander card to use in Spain which we visit a couple of times a year for approx a month at a time. Can anyone advise what we should do?

Balance transfer credit card

Can I use a Virgin Credit Card for clearing an overdraft of £2500 by using the balance transfer of 0% interest for the offered 16 months. I have 3 credit cards, one with a balance of £5,600 the other with £2,600 and the other £1,800. I have an overdraft of £1,800. I've been advised to open another bank account keeping my existing one open to pay off the overdraft and get all my direct debits etc transferred over to a new account. I'd like to balance transfer some of the balances on the credit cards but am worried I won't get high enough credit limit and will end up with another card that I don't really want. Would I be better trying to get another personal unsecured loan? I have one already with Northern Rock which has about £14,000 left on it and I have 6 years left to pay. I'm just getting myself more and more confused and don't know what to do for the best. Is this true? I have recently applied for 2 credit cards because i want to transfer a balance from Virgin as I have missed a payment and they now charge me interest and I have been refused 2 cards. I do not believe that there should be any problems with my credit rating as i have a reasonable size mortgage that i have never missed paying and not in any debt apart from about £2500 on credit card. So i wonder if this is true as i have had rather a few different credit cards in the past, but when i have taken a new account I have ripped up the old card and not used it but i have never thought about cancelling the account. I have looked in my paperwork to see if i have any paperwork from previous cards but unfortunately i haven't - once accounts were cleared I must have got rid of paperwork. Is there anyway i can find out what remaining acocunts i have? Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Credit agreement is application form

Hello, I have requested a signed agreement from my credit card company. The have sent me a copy of my application form (one page, front and back) and a partial copy of terms (one page front and back only listing sections 4 -11) One section of the application states: The consumer credit act 1974 lays down certain requirementf for your protection which should have been complied with when this agreement was made. If they were not, we cannot enforce this agreement with getting a court order. The act also gives you a number of rights:( then lists 3 things) then the declaration box: I apply for a Suite Card to be issued to me. I accept and agree to be bound by the terms and conditions of the Suite Card and any amendments there to and as set out separately in the copy of the agreement. Now there was no other pages within the application form. So my question is? Do I infact have a right to request the debt is cancelled? Is anyone able to view a copy of my application and advise me best what to do next? Many thanks for your help as the info just go way over my head. xoxo Linda

Credit card searches

I understand that some credit card companies do a 'soft' search, which doesn't affect your rating. My wifes and my credit cards have got to a stage when we need to start looking at transferring the balance (approx £10k total) to a balance transfer card in order to cut down on the interest payments with the intention of keeping the current cards paid off and moving the balance transfer money again once the period of 0% interest has expired. Can you recommend the best card(s) for this. Also, our mortgage fixed rate term is due to come to completion at the end of the year, although I may take a months holiday from it to help our current situation. Our Loan to Value is approx 80% currently. Am I better to look at getting a new mortgage fixed rate / tracker as soon as possible, or to sit on the SVR for a few months (currently with C&G). Thanks, Swilly

can i pay off an overdraft with my 0% credit card?

if so will there be a charge for this? any help will be great, thanks in advance

Reward your Christmas spending

The AA has launched a new reward credit card.
