So we moved address which unlucky for us has pre-payment meters in, which have been there for years. We moved to scottish power as they always offered us a good customer service, with weather getting very bad and been in a remote area we asked for these to be removed we dont have any money problems at all and we would like to get a discount for paying by direct debit on a online tariff instead of standard electric prices. Now we have a 4 year old child and my partner has problems walking and breathing and with me working away, could mean that she is stuck in the house with no power and unable to get out or even move. Scottish power at first wanted £149 deposit along with £49 to change the meter. They say its their policy, to me it seems like they dont want custom and want to put people at risk. So to sum it up, if you move into a property with pre-pay and you normaly pay by direct debit dont choose scottish power! Anyone else had this with them? Thank you for your message and I am sorry that you are unhappy with the information given to you. Please be aware that the security deposit is a commercial decision agreed by management to secure payment from customers. Please do not feel insulted by this as the security deposit applies to all customers who have not been with ScottishPower for 12-months and wish to remove a prepayment meter. The charge of £43.99 again is applicable to all customers who wish to change their meter, i.e. if a customer wishes to remove a 2-rate credit meter and install a 1-rate credit meter we will also request payment for the work required. This payment covers the costs involved with changing the meter. I am aware that you have been provided with contact details of my colleague within Customer Relations. Please do not hesitate to contact him direct if you have any further queries. Kind Regards Colin @ ScottishPower" Thank you for your email. It is important to clarify that ScottishPower prepayment prices are cheaper than those applied to customers that have a credit meter and pay on a quarterly basis, so cannot agree that we charge vulnerable customers more. dont deal with this guy: Senior Complaints Advisor Customer Relations 14 Midlands Single Rate standard 13.38p standing charge inc vat, 9.800p inc vat unit charge pre-pay 14 Midlands Single Rate 18.41p standing charge inc vat, 10.695p inc vat unit charge So is it me or do scottish power not understand what they charge?

Volatile Meter Readings

Hi, The flat I live in has four bedrooms and has the standard number of appliances fridges, tv's etc etc. We do not use the tumble dryer and the heating is Gas. We received a threatening letter from SPM Collections on Monday this week demanding £292.56 to be paid immediately. However we never received a bill! When I phoned Scottishpower I requested the meter readings that the bill was based on and was absolutely shocked to see the descrepancies between the meter readings. The meter readings below were all read by somebody from Scottishpower. Date: June 09 Reading 067968 Date: 31/07/09 Reading 068791 Date: 03/09/09 Reading 070727 Date: 27/10/09 Reading 070848 In the 8 week period from when we moved into the flat in June to the first reading in July there was 823 units used. From the reading taken in July to the reading taken in September (5 weeks) 1,936 units were used. From the reading taken in September to the reading taken in October (8 weeks) 121 units have been used. The readings appear to be all over the place. I have read that faulty meters can cause problems however when I asked Scottishpower about this they said thay had no problem sending someone around but it would cost £150 if they concluded the meter was fine. I would be very grateful for any advice you could give. From April every year we switch of our storage heaters(we have yet to put them back on this year). From going online and viewing my year on year energy consumption, it fell as we expected from April 2008 onwards until the winter months, however this year from April 2009 it fell until the end of June to approx 10kwh and began a sharp steep rise until now and still rising as far as I am aware. At start of Jul 09 it was approx 12kwh, Aug 09 35-40kwh, Sept 09 85-90kwh and now to well over 100kwh per day(now instead of having a healthy Credit Balance we are now in Debit). We haven't been doing anything different in terms of electricity usage, no new appliances, the only things on in the flat whilst I am not in is the fridge and the bathroom towel radiator. Calling Scottish Power is pointless as they have a don't care attitude, apart from writing a letter to the CEO of Scottish Power and officially complaining is there anything else I can do? Or can anyone think of any reason for the ridiculously high usage other than someone else in my Flat Block tapping into it(which I will hopefully rule out tonight when I shut off the power for a few minutes).

Changing meter charges

I'am currently with Scottish power on a prepayment meter but wish to switch over to a normally meter they want £300 in security deposits and £100 for the cost of the meter Is there any way around this? as there's no way I can afford it. It seems not. I had a satisfactory and faultless experience with this energy supplier for about 2 years. Every 90 days I was reminded to supply meter readings and paid on line in full. When I moved house (December 2006) I researched the market and decided to resubscribe to SP. How things seem to have changed in a very short time period. My former arrangement - that worked so well - was no longer available. To benefit from the most advantageous tariff I'd have to service it on line and enter into an agreement to pay by monthly variable direct debit (VDD).From my previous consumption history, I had a reasonable idea of the appropriate level to pay each month. There have been a catalogue of errors spanning several months, which I hope may have at last been straightened out. Within days of moving and several weeks prior to approaching SP, the gas meter was exchanged. It still has the yellow sticker showing the date of exchange and details of the meter swapped out, closing and opening readings. June 2006 - first quarterly bill. Wrong tariff for both electricity and gas. I had not been asked to supply readings. This was not too surprising as I had at least 2 visits from Accuread during the early summer months. Despite this, the bill was prepared on estimates. Gas usage was assessed on the old meter. Several phone calls and emails followed during the summer to correct the gas meter serial number and the tariff. The proposed increase in my VDD in excess of 40% was also challenged, successfully. Towards the end of the second quarter I had another visit by Accuread. Apart from readings for electricity and gas, I checked and corrected the gas meter serial number in their handheld unit. So, we were now on track to generate an accurate bill. The second quarter bill showed correct 'Actual' consumption for electricty and zero usage of gas. In trying to sort out these troubles I have 'fallen out of the 90-day cycle' of billing. An estimate was generated at the end of September followed by a further correction in the VDD to take effect from December. My next bill is due today - 28th January 2008. On 18th January I received 'we need your readings' email. Please do so within 10 days. Fine, that is what I expected to do. 26th January - a reminder email about readings was generated at 05:17; please do so within the next 3 days (72 hours, if you prefer). Fine, I have not forgotten and expect to submit readings when due. 26th January - 10 hours into the 72 hours, an estimated bill is generated! Well, I have submitted my own readings that has made a marginal difference to the amount I am in credit. In the next few days, I'll log on to see the details of my current bill looks like. Apart from the variable and poor level (IMO) of customer service my other gripe is with the SP website. You are asked or required to 'Accept' a bill before it is produced. Anyone else have a view on this?

Electricity deposit demand advice please

Hi, Myself and brother run a very small Ltd Co. We have been with Scottish Power for apx 6 years. We had a series of meter readings back in 2003-2005 and then another in Jan 2007. This was our last actual reading and since then, our bills have been based upon estimates. S.Power recently contacted us to request a reading (after 2.5 years) and it would seem that there was an underestimate over recent years, resulting in a bill for £3500. Following a series of calls from us to S.Power, they then contacted us to advise that there was an 'error' at their end and they would be writing off a period of 6 weeks and then recalculating our bill for the last 12 months (up to the most recent meter reading). They have not been clear about what the error was (I suspect it was simply not reading the meter and using poor estimates). They have advised today that they are sending a 'revised' bill which is slightly lower than the £3500 and I should receive this in the next couple of days. I asked them 2 questions (which I hope the forum can assist with) 1. Since they have no actual readings, what reading will be used to 'start' the period? ie. How do they know what was used in the past 12 months and what was used in the previous 1.5 years? 2. Secondly, assuming we agreed on the usage figure, what tariff is applied to the reading? Our pence/KWH has risen dramatically in the past 12 months....so what price is used to calculate the bill given that they have no idea when the electricity was used? They have been pleasant on the phone, but ultimately couldn't answer Q2 above. They did say that the usage would be calculated on some 'average usage basis'. Should I be doing anything? Does it matter that they didn't read the meter for 2.5 years? Do I have grounds for disputing the bill? Any advice much appreciated

Excessive Electric Bill £1047.88 for three months

Dear Scott, I am hoping you can help me on this issue I have with Scottish Power. Me and my girlfriend moved into a 2 bedroom cottage back in March and since then we have experienced nothing but problems trying to sort the heating out at the property. We have three storage heaters in the property; 2 downstairs and 1 on the landing upstairs. I was under the impression that these stored the energy at night when it is cheaper and release it slowly throughout the day. I enquired about setting up a direct debit so we knew the set amount and they said looking at previous bills from the property it would be in the region of £70 per month. This seemed slightly expensive for a two bedroom cottage so I waited to see what the meter readings were after a month or two. I rang Scottish Power to give them my readings and received a bill in the post a few days later for £1047.88! This was the amount they had billed us for less than three months. Clearly this can not be correct for a house of this size. In May Scottish Power said they would be sending someone out or contacting us within 47 days to inspect the Meter and look into our account which is clearly not correct. A bar was supposedly applied to the account during this time. On 2nd July 2009 my partner woke up to receive yet another bill from Scottish power. This time for £650xx . What I can not understand is how this has been sent out when a “Bar” was put on the account until the issues have been resolved. Following a conversation it turned out this bill had been sent in error. My girlfriend rang Scottish Power and they claimed a complaint had been logged and closed off on the 25th June 2009 following a conversation someone in Customer Services (by the name of Davina) had with me. I never had this conversation with customer services and feel furious that a concern has been logged and closed off without even making contact with me to discuss why we keep receiving ridiculous bills. I have discussed this matter in great detail with my landlord who lives next door and runs a dairy farm. Even his quarterly bills are more than half of this. We have had someone from the gas board out to inspect the property and the landlord is looking into piping Gas to the cottage. Last week an inspector came out to check the meter and claims that it is working correctly. I still can not understand how the bill can be over a thousand pounds for less than three months? This complaint has been ongoing since May 2009. I have made a payment of £280 which equates to £70 per month. This is what we understood the average consumption to be upon moving into the property. I would like some clarification as to why the bill is so extortionate. If the bill is correct it equates to £330 per month for a two bedroom cottage, this does not stack up. We simply cannot afford this. My landlord has also given me a copy of the previous tenants bill. It shows that they were charged 5.336 KWh at night and 13.472 KWh during the day. On the bill sent to me I have just been charged 12.656 KWh day and night. When we moved into the property on 01/03/2009 the meter readings were 19,624 night , and 93,164 day. At the end of may they were 23,900 night, and 94,830 day. Since we got that bill I have turned the heaters off and we now have no heating in the house. As you can imagine it is very cold as the house is 250 years old. Luckily we have an open fire which we can use to heat the lounge. I have some other comparibles since we turned off the heaters: 25/05/2009 the readings were 23,900 and 94,830 and on 16/07/2009 they were 24,827 and 95438 16/07/2009 they were 24,827 and on 21/07/2009 they were 24,851 and 95,481. More than anything I am looking for advice. I have logged a complaint with Scottish Power but dont seem to be getting anywhere and they simply want us to pay the bill even though it seems ridiculous. My landlord is very supportive who lives next door. He has owned the house for over 30years and says the bills have never been anything like that. Could it be the storage heaters are broken or using too much electricity? They are Newlec heaters, model NLSH24M and look about 20-25years old. If anyone can give me any advice/pointers here it would be really appreciated. He has been unable to pay them the £360 per month Direct Debit they have been demanding as he is self employed and trying to keep a roof over his head. I think this is diabloical trying to get more money then someone actually has every month to pay a direct debit, so they have advised that next week they will get a warrent and fit the meters. Now as he is my tennant and I own the property, not him can they do this without my authority? Shouldn't they just cut him off? I know that its bad, but the weather is good at the moment and he is hardly using the electricity from what I have seen. For all they know I could kick him out tomorrow and i'm left with prepayment meters for other tennants and this is not what I want. I have tried to search the net since hearing this news a couple of hours ago but to no avail. If someone could please help on this matter it would be greatly appreciated.

Scottish Power - No Gas Bill

Hi Hoping someone can give me some advice. We moved into our property in Nov 2003, usually when you move you recieve a letter/bill from the current supplier. Nothing. I had to phone round all companies and all told me they were not my supplier. I was advised to call the main database to find out who our supplier was ( cant remember the name of it), and they informed me it was scottish power. Numerous calls to scottish power and they still told me they didnt supply us? We did eventually just give up trying, knowing that one day we would recieve a bill. That day came today....................................infact they have given us 2! one for period 27/05/07 - 30/11/08 for £1,645.52 and the other for period 01/12/08 - 28/05/09 for £2,547.55.............................................................GULP. Both estimates, even though regularly throughout our time here meter readers for SCOTTISH POWER have come and read the meter? So, can anyone tell me what I should now be doing? Does the 1 yr rule apply here? They always told us on the telephone they didnt supply us? I really really really need some help please? thankyou in advance Jo

Fed Up!!

I am so disapointed with SP. Its a shame as I have had so many years of good CS, I so hope they are not going down the pan. I understand companies must asses monthly payments to ensure debt is reduced, but this recent request to increase payments by £50 per month is just a joke. Originally I have been paying £68 per month and my account balance was £74 before my latest bill came in for around £250. This has put me in arrears of £315. I asked SP for the breakdown and they provided me with the following Current Service Package: WWW DEB DD DF Electricity 1010 kwh x Primary Unit price 14.701p £148.48 Electricity 3688 kwh x Secondary Unit price 10.469p £386.10 Total £534.58 Gas 5335 kwh x Primary Rate price	4.099p £218.68 Gas 7949 kwh x Secondary Rate price	3.199p £254.29 Total £472.97 Total Electric and Gas Cost £1007.55 5% VAT £50.38 Current Debit Balance £315.33 Discounts £26.25 Total Cost £1347.00 Dividing this total by 12 months shows your Direct Debit should be set at £112.25. First of all, im not sure why they have added my current account balance into the 12 month calculation? If im missing something here, please would someone point it out. The most I should be paying is £88 per month, and I have advised them I am prepared to up my payments to £70, with a re assessment in 6 months time. Obviously gas is used very little in the summer, so good time to catch up. I simply cannot afford to pay an extra £50 per month, and they are not really listening to anything I tell them. Am I screwed here.? or is there another avenue I can take? This time last year I contacted Scottish Power as our electricity consumption was very high. We made changes at this time to reduce our average from 24 daily units. This included fixing a timer which the hot water tank was on as we found this to be the main culprit having used an OWL monitor to determine that when we set the timer to the off position, the water tank was still on every day, all day. We turned everything off and the reading dropped to a residual/zero amount after the water tank was turned off. We've now creeped back up from getting the daily average down from 18 units back up to 21 and I still think that 18 is even too high. I worked out that we currently pay £864 per annum in electricity or £72 per month. The average UK household I though paid approx £1,000 for their entire gas and electricity bill per annum. We don't have *any* heating in this house apart from one towel rail heater which is hardly used. We are a unique household in that we rely upon a log burner, wood and coal to heat our mid-terraced cottage. We have replaced our old economy seven meter for a new one and I changed my electricity supplier and tarriff but now I am left wondering what else I can do to reduce the bill. It does seem consumption is excessive. Although Scottish Power have been helpful and sent us out some useful information in how to reduce consumption, I cannot understand why we use almost twice the UK average electricity consumption per annum since we live in a modest house without many modcons or what we would consider luxuries such as radiators or central heating!. The appliances in the house have all been changed as all have stopped working at various times since we bought the place a few years ago and we have: B Rated Tumble Dryer used approx once per day, A rated Washing Machine used approx once per day, A rated Fridge-Freezer, A rated cooker. Water tank, Microwave, 2 pcs, towel rail and television. Aside from 2 pcs being on the majority of the time, I cannot believe that this should put us in the 7665 Kwh per annum consumption as opposed to the more moderate UK average of 4000 Kwh. I would be interested in any advice.

ScottishPower - Gas - How Much!?

Hi, I've been reading through some of the posts & could really do with some help please. Swapped to SP in Sept last year from Scottish & Southern...Scottish & Southern had been correctly billing as a metric meter, SP initially started billing as Imperial. I went through a load of hassle but got this sorted & thought problem solved. Got the email fromSP asking me to read the meter for gas n 'electric & submitted the findings. It "indicates" I've used 918(!) units (10535Kwh!!) from 8 Jan 09 to 25 Feb 09 (49 days). With the same meter, after reading through the old bill supplied by Scottish & Southern for the same (ish) period the previous year, it states usage as "Sep 07 to Mar 08 @ 1401 units". About right i'd say. We have a 4 bed detatched, heating & water heater on 3 hrs AM, 4 hrs PM. Did switch the heating up a bit in Feb due to the snow & cold weather but this figure just seems mad to me. I had it confirmed to me by SP that I am now being billed as metric by SP & have been taking readings since the initial shock & am averaging about 6 to 7 units a day. Any assistance or confirmation that I'm not being "done" somehow will be very gratefully received. Also just paid about £300.00 to clear the debt to stop them moving my DD up to £155.00 per month. Thanks in advance...Flyer...

Is my bill avarage for a 1 bedroom flat?

Hello Im just looking for opinions from people living in similar sized properties as Im concerned about my consumption. GAS Gas Heating and cooker ELECTRIC 4 lighting fitting all with energy efficient bulbs (20w). Wat do you think? Scottish Power provide both gas and electricity on a direct debit that they put up to £94 (not enough to cover supposed consumption). I know everyone lives in different houses but a one bed flat is still a one bed flat so Im just after a general conparison. I've been fighting Scottish Power for over 12 years now about my bills and that they just seem to be just that bit to high. They kept on putting me onto different deals so I would keep quite about the amount of units I was using but it's now got to a head and I'm fed up, I want this sorted. I live in a one bedroom flat (top) and it's not very big, I have storage heaters (wish I didn't) and panel heaters, a washing machine, electric shower, computer, tv, etc nothing out of the ordinary. There were 2 storage heaters being used back in 2006 but one broke and I didn't bother fixing it, so now I only use one and only at the worst time of the winter. I've worked out that in 2006 I used 10874 units which worked out to 29 units per day, unbelievably high then I worked out the in 2007 I used 5826 units which worked out at 15 units per day which is quite respectable (I was on pricefall & capped rates). Unfortunately that didn't last as in 2008 I used 7580 units which work out at 20 units per day. I've also found out that Scottish Power have me on the wrong tariff which I'm sorting out with them now. I've tried and tried to explain to Scottish Power that the units being used are excessive as I'm out 5 days a week during the day but they still keep saying that it doesn't warrent an engineers visit. If I want to have someone come and have a look it will cost me £50 and if there's no problem with the meter then I don't get the money back. I've had an electrician look at my consumption and everything looks ok with my appliances but I still say that the meter flashes to much. I'm on comfort plus white meter which means I have 2 meters, one with 2 readings: day & night and one for the storage heaters. I'm at my wits end with this company, can anyone help with what steps to take next and whether or not the unit consumption looks to high? Many thanks

Switching electricity from scottish power to british gas

Halo. Can I have some advice please.I have been with Scottish power for over a year and have been paying £112 per month for electricity. This was a lot of money as I live on my own and am at work most of the time anyway, It has been an ongoing battle with Scottish power and I have tried to switch many times before, unsuccessfully as scottish power have always objected, saying I owed them money. Finally a month ago they sent me a bill saying I was in credit by about £350.I then started the process of switching to British gas and have just made the first payment to british gas of £50, obviously cheaper than Scottish power. However, as he process takes up to 4 weeks(so I am told) my account is not fully transferred to british gas yet.So I contatcted Scottish power and cancelled the Direct Debit as i did not want to pay 2 companies for electricity.I have now received a new bill from scottish power, based on estimate readings. It states that my new payments will be £39 per month!!!Now this is cheaper than British gas and while I am tempted to stay with scottish power, I am puzzled why my bill has been so drastically reduced, from £112 to a mere £39 per month, and if i stayed with scottish power is it not a ploy to get me back then hike up my bill a couple of months later. Is it better to just sever all ties with Scottish power and go with British Gas?? When I first joined SP I was paying only £30 per month, which on the last review went up to £36 and a couple of days ago I gave another meter reading, unasked and they have changed by direct debit to £67 a month, however we are only using at most £50 a month, which I have been told by another SP customer advisor and worked out when the bill came through. I live in a two bed flat, that runs off electricity alone, two people out of the house most of the time, try and make most of Economy 7, turn off lights/standby etc. I emailed SP as soon as they revised payments but now they are saying the lowest they can set it to is £67.50, which is obviously 50p more. Emailed back complaining that we are being overcharged £17 a month and can't they set the DD to a lower amount. Waiting back to hear from them again. Has anyone else had this issue or know anything about it? Is this a usual practice - I understand that the DD amount has to be enough to cover the amount we use but an extra £17 seems excessive? Thank you.
