We are distressed about this cost, as it amounts to well over £100 a month. Is there a difference between storage heaters?? We have a huge one in our livingroom that makes our wee red light on our meter go wild and blink every two seconds, which is more than what the tiny instant heat dimplex electric heaters use. Our other smaller storgae heaters do not have the same affect on the meter either, the red light flashes much slower? A couple years ago we lived in a different house with the exact same electric system and it cost us half the price it is costing us now, which is another reason we are sure we must be doing something wrong this time? We have organised for the prepayment meter to be changed to a monthly direct debit bill, will this make much of a differnce or will we just be usingt he same amount of electricity?

Two questions about prepayment meters

First question. This seems absurd considering that only 2 people live here and the place is usually empty. I did receive a letter from Souther Electric asking me to call up and give my readings which I did (I was also told on the phone that the bill was around the £600 mark), however the letter received today said they have not heard from me which is wrong. I cannot afford this and am shocked that is such a high amount considering my last home was a house with three people and cost a fraction of this for the same period (also Southern Electric). Obviously I would like this resolved as soon as possible, I tried calling their customer service line but was put on hold for half an hour so decided to write their head of C/S an email instead. I am very careful with electricity (only run the washing machine after 12.30, leave everything switched off, use energy saver light bulbs etc) and cannot believe this is accurate at all. To top it off I lost my job on monday so am quite scared that I am not going to be ale to pay this off. Any advice on what I could do about this would be appreciated!

Faulty Meter - zero units used

I have been with Southern Electric for over 2 years and for the past year the meter has become faulty and stated that I have not used any units for 12 months. I pay by direct debit and they send someone to read our meter every 6 months but they did not notice that the meter was faulty until I pointed it out to them. They are going to replace the meter and say that a team will assess how to calculate the amount they think I would've used in the previous year. Should I ask them to use the initial year as the basis for doing the assessment or ask them to monitor my usage now? Also, can they request the full amount to be paid immediately or can it be spread over 12 months? Whose responsibility is it to ensure the meter is functioning and am I likely to be charged for the replacement? Thanks.

Southern Electric - New gas meter running too fast!

I was having my supply for gas from BG when I decided to switch over to SE due to it being cheaper. The property was being renovated at the time and the gas was not being used much. At first, due to the property being old, there was an old meter which was working fine. BG then decided to change the meter to a new one due to the life of the old one had expired. Fine i thought. they hanged it and this was working normally as and when the gas was being used when we moved in. Then only after about 3-4 years BG (who own the gas meters) decided to change the meter, AGAIN! I rang BG and asked why this was only after 3-4 years as surely this is too early. they told me that there was a 'fault' with the meter. I said, there was no such fault as this was working normally. Anyway, they forced upon changing it and said if this was not changed then they would fine me £1000. So I had no choice but for them to change it. What a nightmare after it was changed for the second time in 4 years! The second meter is now running as though there's no tomorrow. The usage has of gas has not changed, however, when I look at the meter whilst gas is being used, the units are ticking over so quicklu that they never used to on the previous meter. I questioned this to SE and BG who just ignored me and sais, "You are using gas too much". But I am not. Consequently, this is causing my bills to come in higher than it was previously. What can I do from here?

Mini scam by SWALEC

Just received my final electricity account & DD rebate from SWALEC having switched suppliers. They now bill every 6 months so they estimate reading after 3 months - normally this wouldn't matter but as there have been 4 different tariffs between 1st March and 4th September when I left it does make a difference! Basically they have worked it so that I have used more units in 86 days since the June estimate date than I used in the 95 days from March to June, about 400 units more;what this means is that I'm paying for a greater proportion at the new (higher) rates.I estimate that this has cost me ~£5 vs an even split - they have already sent me a cheque for the DD overpayments so I think I'm on a hiding to nothing - but I'll ring their C/Services to see if I can get a bigger rebate. In general, this estimating at a midpoint between actual billing points is a b....r because the customer doesn't see the estimate until he receives his 6 monthly bill - highly unlikely that you would have read the meter at the right time (altho' I had read the meter on July 1st and it was much higher than their estimate earlier in June) I would suggest everyone checks how many units they have allowed at old rates -I bet they have set it up to be a nice little earner!!!

Unrealistic savings when switching from quarterly to monthly dd

This website is showing unrealistic savings when switching from quarterly to monthly dd. I entered the following details via detailed search option: supplier & tariff: southern electric - energyplus argos no standing charge. gas : 20500 kwh annually elec: 3300 kwh annually duel fuel customer: yes show all payment types I GOT THE FOLLOWING RESULT: IT SHOWS ME A SAVING OF £148.40 IF I STAY WITH MY SUPPLIER & JUST CHANGE THE PAYMENT METHOD TO DD. I called southern electric & they said the direct debit discount is 5% which will give me a saving of around £60 & not £148. I guess all other results are flawed as well. It shows me a saving of £251.40 if i switch to british gas web saver 2. So I called british gas & they calculated & said that i would only save around £163 per year. Who do I believe? What is the whole point of using a comparison site if the results are not what you see. I am confused. It isn't on their website and most of their Customer 'Service' staff don't know what it is. It has a three-rate meter, and my storage heaters are running very effectively on the lowest rate. Unfortunately, I inherited an electric boiler (again, most people don't know they exist) which runs the upstairs heating and hot water to a cylinder tank, it works very well but is ENORMOUSLY expensive. I have been told that water heating can be run on the stored heat rate on Flexiheat, but nobody can tell me if it is possible to use my electric boiler in this way. Does anyone know exactly what can be connected to the cheap stored heat rate and how I can get it done? I have underfloor heating in the kitchen as well which is only rated at about 1kw and is very effective, but runs on the very expensive day-time rate. My latest bill is colossal, can anyone give me any useful advice on how I could cut it down? thanks Mary

Southern Electric Superdeal

Hi. Can anybody please tell me how this "superdeal" works because I have just received my bill for three months £350.00 which I think is very high. I live in sheltered housing, a small one bedroomed flat and was not told or shown how the storage heaters work. I'm not at home during the day but my one bedroom flat get very warm, I have turned down the controls - Input to 3 and the boost to the lowest. Also I have noticed that the storage heaters are being charged at different times of the day. Example, they can on at 6.30 this morning and when off at 7.30am. Sometimes they come on and off in the afternoon. Is this right. I don't have a washing machine or dryer so I am only using Fridge/Freezer, Cooker and TV and my laptop, also the water which I keep on all the time. When I rang Southern Electric they couldn't tell me how Superdeal works which I find very strange. I have asked other tenants but they don't seem to have bills as high as mine. One is on Econmy 7 and only has to charge her key £10.00 per week.

SSE follows Eon in hiking prices

SSE has followed Eon in hiking its gas and electricity prices: http://www.moneysupermarket.com/c/news/utilities/compare-gas-and-electricity/sse-follows-rival's-price-hikes/ What does this latest round of price hikes mean for you?
