I left my previous address in Feb of this year and we recieved a letter dated March 2009 saying we were in credit £30 with Npower, I contacted npower to close account and get refund and sent them a copy of the front page of my new rental agreement as confirmation of new address, unfortunately i never heard back and have admittedly forgotten all about it. Today the letter recieved states they have added £7 onto "my debt" as they had to trace my new address! I know that my previous house has been empty since we moved out as the landlord has put it up for sale, so presumably the gas debt must be an estimated bill on our previous usage. Will i just have to send proof of my new address and the date we moved in and maybe a gas bill from my new house to get npower to close my account?? Also will this show up on credit file as my debt even though its not mine?? Any help appreciated- thanks

nPower Billing Six Years Late

I am relived that I am not alone in suffering problems with nPower, but it seems that for now at least, the law is on their side. . I vacated a premises on 11 August 2006, and requested a final bill from nPower. Despite repeated requests a closing balance was never received. . I then received a closing statement for nearly £500 in July 2009, which included outstanding amounts going back to December 2003 - even though electricity bills had been regularly received and paid up until August 2006. I have queried this, as the amount seemed excessive for a summer quarter, and I now have no way of checking the meter readings, or even checking whether the meter that was read was indeed mine. . I have written to nPower, but continue to receive threatening phone calls from representatives who have not even taken the time to read the correspondence before they call, and refuse to listen, or answer pertinent questions. When I have called the Customer Service department to query these matters I have repeatedly been promised a reply, and in one case a fax within 24 hours; but these have either not been received, or have taken a month or more to arrive. . I did send a cheque for 50% of the balance in full and final settlement, which I felt was fair under the circumstances, but I have never received a reply. Meanwhile, the threatening calls continue. . Frankly, the incompetence of nPower is breathtaking, and I really do not feel they can be trusted to deal with customer accounts. . I have even asked them to take me to Court, so we can let a Judge decide whether their actions are reasonable, but they refuse to do this, and say they will send debt collectors if I do not pay within seven days. When I have queried the three year delay in sending the closing statement, (with elements going back six years), they tell me the law allows them to reclaim money for the supply of electricity up to six years from the date of supply! . I am not easily intimidated, but I am now spending inordinate amounts of time dealing with this matter, so I wondered whether anyone here had any magic solutions to this problem. . Meanwhile I look forward to meeting the b*******s in Court, and finally getting some answers to my questions. I have also informed nPower that I intend to charge for unsolicited post and telephone calls from them. . They had been paying their previous supplier £100 per month for electricity only. They said that she should be paying more and decided to increase her bills accordingly. My mother then came across an nPower sales team when she was out shopping. They 'agreed' that under their current circumstances they were paying far too much and that their bill with nPower would be no more than £60 per month. On the basis of this, she agreed to switch and her monthly payments went down to £50 per month. Great, they thought. Until June this year when nPower decided they had been undercharging and decided to hit them for £260 per month (up until December) to cover what they say they should have been paying. By my calculations, nPower are therefore saying that my parents should have been paying between £140 and £160 per month when they switched (I don't have exact dates, so can't give an exact figure). It seems to me that even £140 is too much. We, as a family of four, are paying around £80 - £90 per month in electricity on a prepayment meter. This is the same as when we were living in Cardiff with Swalec as our provider. We're struggling to work out how on earth nPower are saying that my parents, who both work and live on their own (no kids at home), are paying up to twice as much. To give an example, this is what we typically have on at home: CRT 21" TV - 12 hours per day Desktop PC - 24 hours per day Monitor - 12 hours per day 2nd Desktop PC - 4 hours per day Laptop plugged into the power socket - 2 hours per day Netbook plugged into the power socket - half hour per day Fridge Freezer & Chest Freezer - 24 hours per day Electric cooker (Oven & at least 1 hob) - 1 hour per day Kettle - 15 times a day Washing Machine - 3 hours a day Tumble Dryer - 1 hour a day Electric Iron & Hair straighteners combines - half hour a day Water heater - 24 hours per day Electric Shower - 20 minutes per day Vacuum Cleaner - what's one of those? This is what my parents have on: Desktop PC & Monitor - 3 hours per day Fridge Freezer & Chest Freezer - 24 hours per day 42" LCD TV - 5 hours per day 32" LCD TV - 2 hours per day Power tools - 2 hours PER WEEK! Electric Cooker - half hour per day Microwave - half hour per day Kettle - 5 times a day Washing Machine - 2 hours PER WEEK! Tumble Dryer - 2 hours PER WEEK! Electric Iron - 2 hours PER WEEK! Power shower - 10 minutes per day Water heater - never on. Vacuum Cleaner - 1 hour per day These are maximum limits. There are also other little things both households have, including Sky+, Sky Multiroom, broadband router, energy saving lights, etc. At the minute they're also using portable electric heaters but only for one room since they tend to live in the dining room ... the rest of the house is usually unused and all lights in the house, apart from the dining room and hallway are off virtually all day. All in all, the amount requested by nPower seems excessive considering that they're hardly in. Someone's home at our house virtually all the time. My mother has asked nPower to investigate but they've just flatly refused. She's obviously wondering if they're paying for the electricity of their only neighbours across the road (the house is a detached dormer bungalow in the middle of nowhere down a narrow back road with just one much older house opposite). How can we investigate what's going on here?

Massive npower bill... I changed to N-Power in Nov 07 (!) and was paying by dd £50pcm for joint utilities. then i got a bill for over £2k for the period feb-sept 2008, with the majority of the expense being for gas. the only thing in my house that is gas other than the hob, is my central heating, and it wasnt on between feb and sept!!! it was broken, and i only got it fixed when i had it serviced in Nov 08!!! i have had numerous emails to and from n power, where they basically told me that i cant prove the bill is incorrect and if i dont pay it theyre going to cut me off. in the end they agreed to put in a card meter, but it is costing me £10 every few days for electric, and £20 a week for gas.... this is the latest email reply i have had from them: Our Reference Number: xxxxxxxxxx > > Thank you for your email regarding your bills on your previous normal meters. > > I understand your concerns having a large balance on your accounts and I can confirm we did turn up on 14 April 2008, however there was no access for us to read your meter. > > After carefully checking your accounts I can see that our energy efficiency team advised you on 15 September 2008 to take 7 days readings from your gas and electricity meters so we could check your daily usage. We also explained to you that leaving your gas on 24 hours a day on low will cause excessive usage. > > You called us back on 6 January 2009 with your readings and we explained to you that your electricity used around 22 units a day, which seems normal, however your gas usage came to around 5.5 units per day, which did seem higher than normal, however this is because you were leaving your gas on low 24 hours a day. > > Another reason why your balance increased is that you stopped making payments to your accounts on 5 September 2008. > > In view of the above we have checked your usage, explained to you that leaving your gas on low 24 hours a day would result in a large balance and as you were not making payments to your accounts this resulted in having a large balances outstanding on your accounts. > > I trust this information has been useful for you and it has help you to understand why your balance are outstanding. > > Kind regards > npower customer service to which i replied: What you have said in your email is correct, however, I received the bill for a large amount, long before september, and it was covering the period from february onwards. I DID NOT have my heating on at all as a part had broken, and we didnt find out about it until i had the heating serviced in November 2008. I understand that having my heating on low over the winter would increase my bill, but my argument is, i didnt have my heating on at all during the period that you have billed me for - i couldnt have even if id have wanted to as the pump had broken!!!n since the conversation with you in september, i have used my heating conservatively, following your guidance, and have seen a reduction in my gas useage. what is concerning me is that the peeriod you have billed me for, an excessive amount, was over the SUMMER months, when i didnt use the heating!! i stopped paying my direct debit out of protest at the lack of support i was receiving from N Power, and the less than helpful customer service. i even called you to tell you that i wasnt paying any more until you came and sorted it out!!! i even had numerous conversations where i confirmed the meter reading when i set up the account with you in Nov 07, and the reading at the time of the phone call (aug 08 i believe) and confirmed with the customer service person the amount of gas used. then we worked out how much it should have cost, and how much i had paid, and what was outstanding, and the customer service person agreed that the bill seemed excessive. they also told me that my meter was going backwards as you had readings for 6xxxx and i was giving you readings of 4xxxx so i must have tampered with my meter!!!! i would like you to look again into my account, as there is no way in this world that i have used 139 kWh per day last year compared with 11 kWh per day this year!!!! thats over ten times the amount!! it almost seems as though i am being charged for the whole street, not just my property!!! N Power are renowned for having done this in the past, and i personally know TWO other N Power customers who have had this exact same problem with you in the last two years. I am not happy with your reply that basically says its my own fault, even though you neglected to mention that during the telephone call regarding leaving my heating on low, i told the agent that it was with a PREVIOUS supplier, not with yourselves, and it had only ever cost me £40 per month. I have never left my heating on low since you have been my supplier - i worry about even putting the hot water on for an hour for a bath because it costs me £5!!! i have checked this by noting the amount on my pre pay meter before putting the water on, and then noting it again an hour later when i turn the water off. There is no way that putting the water on for an hour should cost me £5!!! my best friend is with Utility Warehouse, and has a three bedroom detached property, and she only pays £10 a week for her gas!!!!! i look forward to you contacting me with an acceptable solution to this problem. N Bishop since then i have had no further communication from them. i am wondering whether i have a case for the ombusdman to help me with etc??? any help would be greatly appreciated, as i am really starting to suffer because of this - im a student, and dont earn much, and nearly all my wage goes on the card meter! im scared of putting the heating on because of the cost!!! please help!!! There is also 2 small reception rooms ( lounge and dining room ). We recently moved into the house. Our electricity and gas is with npower. We recently got a 3 month period £850 bill for the electricity and a £770 notification for the gas (come back to the gas shortly). With the electricty, it was the biggest bill I'd ever rec'd. I'd expect £400+ (as we have a very young family and the washing machine is always on) but not £850. We know the price of power has gone up considerably recently. We immediately thought there was an issue with the meter and contacted npower customer services. Got to say that the result was one of the rudest conversations we have ever had with any company. We basically said that the bill was high and we'd like for the meter to be checked. In a nutshell npower said no. We talked more and they then said they write to me about coming out to inspect the meter and tell me about the charges involved in that. That was 6 weeks ago and there hasn't been anything from them at all. It turns out the bill is ours. We checked with the estate agents for initial readings and yes, the bill reflects what we have used. Let's just say that we have gone around the house taking out halogen light bulbs. Where there was 15 ( kitchen ), there is now 2. Let's say the landlord likes his halogen lighting - he should of warned us about the costs but lesson learnt, not shifting responsibilities here. And if the electricity is high then we'll accept the gas bill may be high too. We don't think we have the best boiler in town in this property. Why are we writing this thread? Okay, for the electricty we paid £450.00 immediately to get the bill down. We then agree £200 a month for the rest of the year with n-power. We missed last weeks first £200 direct debit and just got a letter from n-power telling us that they are taking action so that they can fit a prepayment meter. Why did we miss the payment? The gas bill. Out of the blue, with no bills whatsoever a door step collection agent turned up at our property and demanded £770 for the gas supply. Got on to the phone to n-power and explained that we had not rec'd any bills from them. In this call we were basically told that n-power are the world's best company and that we were liars. It was a real difficult call but we was given no choice (this company is really good at threatening customers) but to pay the phone bill in full. We demanded that the gas bill was sent to us so that we could see what we are paying for - that was about 3 weeks. Guess what, no bill! So in the matter of approx 6 weeks N-power have had £1250.00 off us - almost all of our wages after rent has been gone to n-power. It's a good job we had food in the cupboards and in the freezer otherwise we'd have been in trouble. I know I have to call n-power today to sort out the electricty bill but I am expecting them to demand the full £400 which is outstanding. We tried to move the electricity account to British Gas so as to get the costs down but n-power rejected the change of supplier until the outstanding bill is cleared. Nightmare situation for us. These bills will be paid and we will be moving to a different house as the place we are living at is too expensive for us. But can also say that we'll never ever have any dealings again with npower.

n power trouble . please help me

to cut a long story short n power have charged me an unbelievable amount of £1059 for 30 weeks gas and electricity for a 2 bed bungalow with 2 adults working full time !! {we moved out } and now have a 4 bed property which the g AT a is vastly cheaper , anyway they said beacuse we moved out they cant test the meters and i am liable , they are sending debt collecters round . all i can afford is £20 per month to cover both the gas and electricity . whats the best way to approach the offer and what if they refuse it ?? We have been receiving invoices for the electricity from NPower which we have been paying. Just this week we received a pile of invoices from NPower which are for a completely different meter. Our electrician has been out to the property and it turns out that the invoices we have been paying are for a meter that doesn't even exist in the property!! The invoices that we have recently received are in fact for the only meter that is in the property. However, these invoices go back to 2006. How do we go about resolving this problem with NPower as we have been informed that they can only go back 12 months? I would appreciate it if someone could get back to me on this. I recently received a letter from nPower to say that my electricity account had been reviewed (after the 2 heaviest winter quarters) and my direct debit needed to be increased from £27 to £37 a month. This seemed an extraordinary hike and having reviewed my last couple of years bills it was plainly exorbitant and unnecesssary. I phoned them and having got through no less than 3 switchboard menus finally spoke to a live human being. Almost before I had got the nature of my query out she was telling me that "It was a mistake, we're only asking for an increase to £29.50". Given that many people probably don't have the time/inclination to check such letters and just go with the flow this seems like an awfully good way for nPower to increase their cash flow.

Beware npower

I used the moneysupermarket comparison site and switched to npower with a dual fuel direct debit of £178 per month a slight saving from British Gas. A year on having never missed a payment I was told I owed a further £2500 - effectively I should have been paying double - hardly a saving. Npower say is because I went through a third party - yourselves! - Even though I filled in all the required criteria I was apparently put on a low user tarriff -totally unsuitable for a large 4-bed house with 5 adults. Having reassessed meter readings npower have whittled my bill to £1915.51, offered me a £50 "goodwill gesture" and payment plan! No thank you. I cancelled the direct debit and informed them by email. I said I would be happy to reinstate it when I got the statement that would have included the details of the direct debit increase. They replied saying they could only deal with my email if I gave them my customer account number, which I had clearly stated in my email to which they had replied! To this date I have still not received this statement, despite several further requests. What followed was endless threatening letters, which I didn't have time to deal with as I was in the final year of my University degree. Looking at some of these, it appears they are asking for money which I had already paid by direct debit. On Wednesday 12/08/2009 they forced entry to my home and fitted a prepayment meter. They didn't leave a key which is needed to pay money onto the meter, saying one would arrive in the post the next day. Two weeks later and still none has been received, despite them having been reminded on the phone two days ago. The credit they paid onto the meter will run out in a few days and we have no way of paying more money onto it, so the electricity will go off. If you are with Npower, leave them now, if you are thinking of changing to them, don't. They are highwaymen and not to trusted.

Moved into first rented house

Hi we've just moved into a rented house and the gas and electric is with npower. We may also want to change from npower to possiblt e-on and in that case would we contact e-on to change the meter? Thanks for any help. We have had the usual 'representitives' call and take numerous readings and this has only come to light when we found that Npower were taking £350 a month! for electricity. I have asked for an actual bill and usage breakdown, Npower stated that they did not know how many units had been used and that they would compare last years bill to calculate the outstanding balance. This has caused me some concern as we used our home as an office before relocating early this year, naturally our usage had reduced. Where do I stand with this? A colleague has advised me that if Npower cannot prove usage then they cannot charge me, where this is an attractive prospect I cannot see it happening. Npower also has a large amount of our money (we believe in excess of £2000) but they will not confirm it until they decide the outstanding balance. I'm not sure what constitutes a unit of gas - the five black numbers or the five black numbers plus the three red numbers on the meter. It has moved from 10508(752) on 1st July to 10509(842) on 7th July. I would just like to know if a unit includes the three numbers in red or not as this would obviously cost considerably more than just the black numbers. Also, does anyone know the current cost per unit of gas and how much I have used so far? Gas was fine, they had, of course, over-estimated slightly. Electricity however... Our last meter reading (17/03) was 38237 and as of 14/05 they estimated it should be 38698. Which would cost us £66.50 for 2 months. Between two of us in a two bed flat. Our actual meter reading however is 87054. What?! How could we have POSSIBLY used that amount in two months?! That's 48817 units. I've been away at least two days a week since my mum broke her ankle. Meaning only my flatmate has been here. And he's mostly at his girlfriend's house anyway. And ok, I cook a fair bit, but surely I'd have to be cooking non-stop to work up that sort of bill! Just as an aside, I think that would work out at about £930 for two months electricity I took a meter reading on 14/05 myself, but missed the meter reader coming over. The reading then was 86186. So, over the course of 2 weeks we've used 868 units. That's pretty steep. But on average, that should still only cost us £595. What the hell is going on? Or am I just an energy using machine? Any ideas? meh Edit: And after checking old bills, between september and February, we only used £250 worth of electricity :S

Npower SW D1 ONE tarrif

Hello, I'm currently on the Npower SW D1 ONE tarrif which is fixed until August '09. The cooker is elec and we have energy saving lightbulbs and a washer dryer (the dryer we use all the time). The hot water and heating are gas, and we have the boiler off unless we need to use it. Standard tarrif's. I believe if I go paperless I might save?? I curently am paying £70 a month for electrity. And £40 for gas but that is to clear a back debt due to them failing to input a reading from a meter man and then reducing my payments and giving me a refund of the credit I was supposedly in to only discover in November just gone, that I then owed £120. I anticiapte it should not need to be more than £15 max a month maybe even just £10 to cover winter useage. I have no heat in my bathroom so like in the bitterly cold psell this last winter the firre was on 24/7 on the lowest setting for a few weeks to keep the whole place a little warmer. The bathroom was so cold (15C) that I went 4 weeks in between baths! (I did wash!!!!!) I am hoping to persuade the landlord to install some form of heating in there, I do believe a msall sotrage heqater might be able to be used? (The landlords are very good. They are a charity. They installed a drive for me so I could have my car at the front door as the road I live on is fully parked up in the day- all day- by shop workers and I would go out and come home to find I had to park a long distance away and that was before I was able to get my wheelchair in my car. So on some occasions I was forced to sit in my car hoping someone would leave so I could park a bit closer to my home. But that is all resolved now. ) ( I previously lived in a 3 bedroomed detached house and within 6 months of moving in to this place was paying the same as I had there overall on fuel! I was horrified!! The move was on health grounds and the bank would not continue my mortgage because of my health and so I had to rent to remain close to my support network.) I have been looking at other posts and the question on Economy 7 useage. I seem if I have my maths correct to be using about 70% of my electricity at night. This really surprised me. Per quarter in the winter gone it was 4300 kWh in total, with 35000 at night and 800 in the day. I have 2 storage heaters in my bedrooms, an electric immersion heater on a timer, ( 2 hours a day, morning in Economy 7 period the evening is not to allow me an evening bath) and a Gas fire only used in the winter. I am disabled and very mobility imapired so I do feel the cold. But I try to keep temperatures at 22C max. 1 heater is 10 years old, the other 2. But that room is little used so the door is closed and the heater only on 1 in winter. Even so the newer heater a 2.5 kWh one in my bedroom where I can spend up to 70% of my time becasue of my health is never hot at the bottom at the end of Economy 7 hours. And in this last winter (which I know was abnormal!!) was cold by 6 pm - I had to put extra heating and clothing on in an evening. I cannot put too many layers on as that restricts my movement) At night what is on are my 2 storage heaters, my bedroom one on max, the other on 1 in cold weather, the fridge freezer, the immersion for 1 hour, and one TV and Sky Box on standby as I cannot reach to turn them off. ( I may try to get a remote plug for them so I can turn them off- if they work!!- any opinions?!) The other TV etc. and all other appliances are turned off when not in use. I always turn lights off when not in rooms and have energy saving light bulbs in place. There is an outdoor security light triggered by movement. But it is only coming on about 3 or 4 times a night for 2 minutes or so. The maisionette is about 50 years old. The windows are double glazed. 4 years in place. Cavity insulation was installed about 2 years ago. I cannot say I have noticed any difference but the lady upstairs says it has helped her bills. The window in my bedroom -facing north- is a massive 8 foot by 4 foot and I have thermal blinds and curtains (at all windows in the property) which are always closed at dusk. And on very cold days only open enough in my bedroom to allow light in. They stay shut in other rooms. I am on benefits and find I am paying about 9% of my income on fuel. So-- 1. Is nPower the best supplier? They have always been my electricity supplier but people say they are the most expensive. They have a Special Needs section to ensure I never lose my electricity supply or else they provide alternative heating. And they sent me free light bulbs once!! A fail safe so I am never cut off. So I would want a similar option with a new supplier. 2. Do you think the 80% useage is too high? I always forget to run my washing machine and tumble dryer at night stupidly. If I did it would be used 3 times a week max. I complained by phone two or three times when they started chasing the debt & heard no more. No payment was made. Two of my neighbours received invoices, one paid (by DD) the other did as I did. I have now received this years' charge of £0.69 for energy consumption & £65.99! for administration, plus VAT of £3.33 giving a total of £70.01.. Do I have a case to claim this is an excessive charge in view of the consumption (it being an estimate, no reading is made)? Many thanks BobC

Completely confused by Gas Bill

Hi Everyone We have been living in our rented 3 bed semi since October 2008. We pay our Gas and Electric by DD (£70 p/m). We have just recieved a 6 month statement from when we moved in and it says we are in debit by £791!!! After going through the useage breakdown it states that each month from Oct - April this year we used 109 units of Gas, but in April to May we used only 24? We have done nothing different and certainly not as drastic as the above difference?? This doesnt make sense to me - the letting agent submitted our gas reads on the day we moved in and (stupidly) we didnt check them until April when we submitted an actual reading to NPower. So the agent reading and the april reading are actuals and appear correct, and the april reading and todays reading is actual and correct - so why such a big difference in useage? Please can someone help me as I feel sick at the thought of paying a DD of £220!! Thank you
