EDF said meter was not faulty, would cost to have it checked (if proved not faulty) and money due was for used gas. On examining the accounts since taking our gas from EDF the only actual meter was the last. Has anybody any idea what the regulations say about maximum time between readings? I have checked and cannot see any “neighbours” connected to my gas pipe. I am taking Dailey readings for 7 days. We live in a two bedroom flat with a 4 year old condensing boiler, gas hob and the flat has cavity foam insulation and attic is insulated. We moved in 2003 and our gas direct debit has always been around £25ish. We had a new meter fitted end of last year. I have looked and the gas accounts and this year, 708m3 gas used in 270 days this I make to be 22,651kwh. And, this for a year is 30,622 kwh, and per day 88 kwh! Has any body any thoughts regarding: Has anybody any idea what the regulations say about maximum time between readings? What the average daily use is? In March 2006 I became an EDF Dual Fuel customer and have always paid by direct debit. Other than having a couple of disagreements regarding the amount to pay each month by direct debit when they attempted to double my payments (which I won) the relationship appeared to be OK. Earlier this year I decided to check that I was getting the best deal and visited a couple of comparison sites. Both of these were unable to deal with my requests as they stated that I had entered the incorrect details for my Electricity tariff. I had entered Online V3 for Gas and Standard Domestic Tariff for Electricity which was shown on my bill. Totally confused, I contacted EDF's Customer Services department and spoke to a guy who informed me that Standard Domestic Tariff is a Single Fuel Tariff and that I had obviously been put on the wrong tariff in error. I was informed this wasn't a problem and that he would rectify the problem, put me on the correct tariff and arrange a refund for the overpayment. Great news I thought and waited for the cheque! However when I received the following quarter's bill indicating that I was still on the same tariff and I hadn't heard anything regarding the overpayment, I rung EDF's Customer Service department again to be informed that Standard tariff isn't a single fuel tariff and there wasn't a problem with my account. However when I asked about the online tariff she did admit that that would be a cheaper option and didn't know why I had been put on the Standard tariff initially. That made two of us then! On 4th August I emailed EDF, stating the above and asking them to investigate the matter, and have just received a letter of apology dated 21st September together with an updated Electricity bill showing that between April 06 and Aug 09 I have been overcharged by £563.79. I am very unhappy that I have been paying for a much more expensive single fuel tariff since 2006 rather than the online tariff that I signed up for and also that, had I not queried it in writing, it appears that their error would not have been admitted. What makes it worse is that this period was also a very difficult time for me as I'd just been made redundant and really struggled to pay my bills - often having to accept loans from my parents to help me. Paying over the odds for my electricity was something I could have done without at this time. They have confirmed that this amount will be credited to my account but I intend to ask for the overpayment to be repaid to my bank account. However as they have had an interest free loan from me for almost 3.5 years, what I would really like to ask you is, could I also ask EDF for interest on the £563.79 they have overcharged me during the past few years? I have seen several items on forums whereby utility companies have had to pay compensation when similar issues have been taken through the courts. This isn't a route a particularly want to go down but feel really hacked off that I've been subsidizing EDF (albeit in a very small way) for the past 3.5 years. Any advice would be very gratefully received. Best wishes.

Electricity Transfer Procedure

Hi, I am at present with EDF "Price Protection 2009" tariff. I think it is a little too high but would be glad to hear from everyone. We have just moved to a new flat (in February), and have not had any previous bills with EDF (having been abroad). The tenant before us has moved out and the correct meter reading was supplied when we moved in. Our first 6 month bill came in at just over £300, making it a £50 per month bill. The bill is based on a reading we supplied, and not on an estimate. We live in a rather small one bedroom new build flat with a very good energy certificate (C). The flat is superbly insulated and warm - we have not used the heating at all, even in the middle of winter. Everything we have is electric, so that includes boiler, fridge, cooker and oven (which we use regularly), washing machine (about 2 times per week). We also use laptops and a radio but do not have a TV or any other kind of fancy gadget like games etc. We do not have a dishwasher and have never used a tumble drier. As I said, we have never switched on the electric heaters in the flat during the whole winter. We also replaced all our lighbulbs with energy efficient ones as soon as we moved in. We also never leave anything on standby. Considering that the heaters have never been switched on, I consider our bill too high. What does everyone else think? I have also been trying to decipher our bill and the other EDF literature we recieved to find out when the cheaper night rate is it is all incomprehensible! We are on the 'standard electricity tariff'. Is it worth switching to another tariff, and how does one do this? I am trying to find out if we have a cheaper night rate for electrcity and if so, when this is? I would be happy to switch to using the washing machine at night if I could make any sense of the EDF tariffs! Thank you all in advance.

EDF is my bill average?

I am interested to see whether my bill is considered average, I am with EDF on economy 7, both of us work in the day so hardly any electric is used in the day, I have a dj set up amp graphic equalizer, mixer, 2 turntables, and the usual stuff dvd player computer, washing machine microwave, sky box etc. We pay £100 a month which to me is extremly excessive for a 1 bedroom flat, we do have night storage heaters but our bill is still approximately £1200 a year. At end jan 2008 I had a new condensing boiler fitted to replace the old floor standing one, my bills didn't alter very much so I then had the aga removed and a new cooker with gas top and electric oven hoping to notice a saving in gas usage, finaly earlier this year I had the gas fire taken out and a wood burner fitted. I have not had my boiler on for 9 weeks now and my water is heated by the electric imersion so you would think that my usage would be minimal but, I have just received my gas bill which says I am using 13.50 units per day first gas bill 3 sept 07- 15 nov 07 30.57 units per day with aga, boiler and gas fire next bill 15 nov 07 -08 feb 08 29.50 units per day still with above appliances next bill 08 feb 08 - 14 may 08 20.50 units per day old boiler was removed still had aga and gas fire next bill 14 may 08 -18 aug 08 6.30 units per day aga taken out begining of may 08 next bill 18 aug 08 - 10 nov 08 15.67 units per day only got gas fire and new cooker and boiler next bill 10 nov 08 12 feb 09 22.18 units per day gas fire taken out replaced with wood burner jan 09 this bill 12 feb 09 - 25 june 09 13.53 units per day Nov - feb 07 30.50 units per day will all aplliances Nov - feb 08 22.18 units per day with aga nad boiler gone? no one is home in the day time. the cooker only get used about 5 times a week. the boiler is now totally switched off , the water is on electric, so really i should not be using 13 units a day according to EDF. the lady at edf rang transco and the guy there said its not eratic usage its same as it has been for the past few years, he could not understand that i no longer have the gas guzzling appliances etc and would not authorise a meter check.i was advised there could be a leak in the gas main, so I asked how would that show on my meter as the meter is fitted after the main they said it would still make the meter clock up maybe I am stupid but I still dont see how? then they said maybe there is a leak in the house I told them there is no smell of gas in here either, I am just so sick of them I feel like having the gas cut off and move to all electric and wood burning.i have tried to get quotes from other companies on comparison sites but they all seem to come back with the same reply - cannot quote as the supply too large to be a domestic property - I have also taken energy advice from the energy saving trust and they said the usage is too high for the appliances I have. I was advised to do a 7 day meter read and then ring my supplier with it, but I have done that 3 times already over the past 2 years and they say nothing to suggest anything is wrong. Also meter reader said my meter might be faulty because these type are well known for faults ( krom schroder lable says fitted 2004 ) when I did the 7 day readings I put my boiler on for 1 hour then off for 1 hour whilst on I used 1 unit per hour .I did this 3 times each day for the 7 days and took readings every hour the same usage was noted every hour 1unit (whilst boiler running) If anyone has managed to get to the end of this without dropping asleep I would appreiciate any advice that any one can give aas to what i can do now. I'm a single person who works full time, so am therefore not in during the day, and the flat is gas heated, with a gas hob and electric oven. I've been paying between £40 and £60 a month since i've lived here and i've since found out that seems to be a lot more expensive than other people I know in similar sized houses/flats. Anyway, back to the problem. I called EDF and they offered me the option of paying over a longer period of time, which I agreed. 5 minutes later I got a phone call saying the new reading i'd just given over the phone means the bill has shot up to £1300!!! I couldn't believe it and i've told them i'm not paying, and looking around it seems i'm not the only one to fall victim to their shoddy practices. Now I accept that estimated billing can be inaccurate, but other people I know are paying £30-35 a month and i'm still paying £57 for useage. Taking the £1300 and dividing it by the 60 months i've been living here, they are, in effect saying I use £75-80 worth of electricity per month!! Surely there's something wrong somewhere? But, if you're sitting comfortably, I'll begin... EDF Energy Networks wants us to pay £1,600 to reconnect the electric supply from the mains in the street to our property in South East London. It also wants us to wait up to four months before it actually reconnects the supply and, in the meantime, prepare the property for its engineer. Which means laying pipe from the fuse box to the street, at a depth of 45cm, so it can put the cable down. It also wants us to install a metal plate to fix the fuse box to. We currently have no electricity (clearly), we have an 18-month old and a baby due in September. We are kipping on friends sofas. The reason the property has no electric from the mains is that it was being used as a marijuana factory, was shut down by the police and, according to EDF, had the electric cut off at the mains. There is no evidence outside the property anywhere to suggest the street has been dug up and the cable cut. Is EDF getting us to pay for renewal of network infrastructure? We are angry because the process is expensive, lengthy, complex, inconvenient and potentially dangerous. The handwritten instructions left us by an EDF site engineer are extremely unclear. A rough diagram of where the pipe should be laid. No detail of where the pipe can be purchased. No detail of the type of metal plate. The sales order clearly states EDF will walk away from any site that is not prepared correctly, and a penalty charge will be levied. Also, we have instructions to dig a trench 45cm below the ground from the fuse box in the house to the street. It is unclear whether the trench should be sited 45cm below the floorboards or 45cm below ground level. Worse, there is a large concreted area between the front door and the public footpath, which we are also required to dig. We would require a heavy-duty breaker drill for this. The metal gas pipe to the house also runs under this section. It seems entirely logical and likely the gas pipe runs where EDF has indicated for us to dig. We contacted British Gas to ask if it knew of the precise location of the gas pipe. It said it did not. Clearly if I, a novice with very limited information, hire a drill to dig the front garden and hit a metal gas pipe with a spark, there could well be an explosion. If we hired a professional, with very limited information available to him, there would quite reasonably be an insurance premium for the work. We have paid the £1,600 in order to make the process as swift as possible. Of course, our house renovation is personal. But it is also good for the community in light of the property's past usage. We are being held up by a public service. EDF is charging us a lot of money for reinstallation of the electrical supply, and we are required to prepare the site. The instructions we have are shoddy. We are also being made wait an awfully long time. The cost hurts, ultimately, but could be made more bearable if the action by EDF was prompt and efficient. It is not. And our personal circumstances make the matter extremely urgent. Is this normal? How can EDF get away with this? Because it is a monopoly? What can we do? We have contacted our local MP, Consumer Direct and the Energy Ombudsman. Anyone had experience of this, or know how EDF works its infrastructure business? Thanks.

Am I paying too much or using too much? Since this darn credit crunch I have been trying hard to reduce our bills and costs etc. We are with EDF and although we are building a new house (so using power tools, cement mixers etc - though mainly weekends now!) we are just the two of us living in a new built (insulated) timber cabin at the end of the garden. No gas to the property so currently we are Electric hot water and heating (radiators). I have a tumble drier that I use just once or twice a week. A Dyson washing machine, dishwasher, electric oven, 2 TV's, DVD player, SKY receiver, shower (not electric!)... not more than the normal home I suppose! We have a tariff called 'Warmwise' which I understand is no longer available. Our bills are what I consider to be VERY expensive - though without a comparison I guess it is hard to know. Last bill shows usage as: This Quarter: average daily use 47 units Tariff Charges: Warmwise 2nd Feb to 27 April Day rate (old price before EDF cut their costs): 864 units @ 14.780p Day rate (new lower price) 409 units @ 14.110p Eve/Weekend rate (old price before EDF cut their costs): 1038 units @ 11.440p Eve/Weekend rate (new lower price) 492 units @ 10.920p Night rate (old price before EDF cut their costs): 775 units @ 5.530p Night rate (new lower price) 367 units @ 5.280p Our total bill exc vat was £431.79 The new house will be super insulated, double glazed and will have a Ground Source Heat Pump with underfloor heating throughout- so even though the house will be much much bigger than where we are living now - I am hoping it wont be anywhere near as expensive to heat. Do my bills sound high to you? Does our usage for 2 adults sound high? (we do use the shower twice a day - Husband is a builder so showers straight after work! but there is no bath!) Am I paying too much or do I actually have a good tariff?

EDF energy bill sky high.

Hi Ive just received my edf electricity bill at £3,479.90p for a one bedroom one disabled person bungalow i rang them up they said they had had estimated bills for a few years now, As being in a wheelchair i cant read my meter as right at back of cupboard, i spend a long time at different hospitals because of my condition so normally get home to a stack of bills in which i felt safe assured my bills get paid as am paying by debit my EDF bill is paid £34, it says last quarter (last year) 10.94. last quarter 11.61 This quarter 324.23 I only get disability benefits as i said I'm wheelchair bound, I have no way what so ever of paying this back. i don't know what to do and am sick with worry i always pay my bills have no credit cards and have never been in debt i have applied for the edf grant thing and am still waiting. Have lived at my present adress for nearly three years now and is a 2 bedroom flat with economy 7 heating, it is just me and my 2 year old son. I'm at work all day from 8:00 untill 17:00 and when in don't use much electric anyway the odd light tv and fridge/freezer, Was paying estimated bills of £90 a quarter and this sounded ok to me so kept on paying them as my first property didnt know how much it should be. Until one day had a masive bill land on my doorstep and reckon i was using £300 a quarter and someone had read the meter. I made a complaint and was told to keep a record of my meter readings. I also asked my neighbour to do this who is also with edf, my readings were three times as much even tho she is in all day. They finally sent someone out from homecare who was the most patronising person i have ever met. He checked all my appliances and nothing wrong asked him to check my meter he just said theres nothing wrong with that and didn't even look! Now they want £70 to have it checked. Then he got out his paper work and totally confused me and worked out how i could pay them back £887 I owe. Minus £200 they are going to take off because of a printing mistake they have made? Tried energy watch and they sent me a letter saying they are investigating the matter this was22nd august and had to phone the up a couple of days ago because i havent heard anything, got through to the person who was following up my complaint and he told me theres nothing they can do. So back at square one what can I do? I do think the meter is faulty but not happy to pay the £70 they want, Any help appriciated

EDF "Additional charge"

When our house was built, the building company for some reason known only to themselves, didn't connect the gas supply to Transco, but to some company called Independent Pipelines. This caused us some problems at the time because only British Gas and a couple of other companies would allow us to sign up with them because of this. We have been with EDF for several years now and the gas price has just gone up yet again. I assumed this was just the usual increasing their profits and everybody was getting the same treatment, until I found some very small print telling me they were charging us extra ( a huge 11.50p per DAY!!) for the honour of being connected to the other company. I find this unfair as I have no choice in the matter. Is there any way of switching to Transco like you switch phone line rental? Or do any companies accept Independent Pipelines customers without charging this extra fee?

EDF gas bill (corrected for the last 2 years)

Dear Friends! First time here and in need of your help. EDF decided that they have been billing us with the incorrect meter reading type for the last 2 years and therefore have sent us a huge bill for £2231 (We have not in teh past provided as much reading as we should have, so majority of the billing was based on estimated reading with some readings given by me/wife). My arguments for not paying are as follows: It is your mistake and therefore I will not pay, 2 years backdated due to your error doe snot make me laible to pay. No apologies from them or even a letter to say that there was a mistake from our side? How do I check that the two pages of calculations sent by EDF are correct? I have not started any complaint procedure as i was hoping to get help form teh forum first. May be I have no grounds for argument or may be I do! Please help by indicating what best steps t take Many thanks in advance, Skip, London

Enormous electic bill from EDF

I moved into a flat with my friend back in September. It's 2 bedrooms and everything is electric - cooker, fridge, freezer, shower, washing machine, and has electric storage heaters. We had a LOT of issues getting them to put the bill in our name, and when I did give them my details we did not receive a bill. Upon chasing this up, I found that 2-3 weeks after I registered for the account, the people who moved into the flat below us took our details off and put theirs against the account. We then amended this, and received our first bill for just under £300, which was an estimate for the 2 months we'd been in the flat. When I'd given our details, the person at EDF had told me the bill would be an estimate and asked us to give them some readings over 3 days so that they could calculate our average use (please note that we stupidly didn't take meter readings when we moved in, but the previous tenants had given final readings only 2 days before). When I gave our readings to the EDF employee, I was told that the bill would work out at £800 for the time we'd been there (now 4 months). We called back, spoke to someone different, who still worked it out to be around £500. We were told this was very high, and an engineer came out to check there was nothing wrong with our meter, but he couldn't find a problem. So, we're getting an electrician to look at all our heaters and appliances and check nothing's draining electricity. We're on an Economy 7 rate, we're both out all day at work, come home and sit with 1 light on to watch TV. We don't use the oven or cooker for long periods of time, we turn off lights and applicances at the plug, and we use 2-3 storage heaters when it's cold. So i fail to see why our electricity is costing us £200 a month! Sorry to go on for so long, but we're both very stressed about this! Does it seem realistic to be paying this much? Has this happened to anyone else? If so, what did you do? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Due to an error on my part a direct debit bounced back in September and ever since they have been incapable of actually taking money from me via either debit card or direct debit! At the end of January after being threatened with being taken to court and having a prepayment meter put in I called them up and shouted asking them why would they threaten to take me to court when I keep trying to pay them but they wont take it. I was "fobbed off" to put it politely... I gave them my card details and asked them to process the payment while I waited on the phone but was told they couldn't. After a week, once again they had not taken the money from my account so I called them again! This time the person I spoke to actually took the payment whilst I was on the phone so I thought everything was going to be ok! On tuesday this week I recieved a bill for £1068.59! For starters I refuse to believe my wife baby and I could use £500.00 of electric in three months so I called them to give them a meter reading and query the bill. At this point I was told my account was in a bad debt status and on weds they were going to court to take a warrant out to enter my property and fit a prepayment meter! I asked for more details and was told that I had 28 days to pay the balance of the bill and they would not accept part payment as I had broken a repayment arrangement with them several times before. I argued that that on the 1 occasion when the DD returned, that was my fault but the rest are down to them. I was told there was nothing more they could do. This morning at 11 my wife called me up in tears saying that a man from EDF was there to install a prepayment meter! I asked her to pass me to the EDF man and spoke to him about the problem at hand. He told me that EDF had actually already been to court on the 4th Jan and already had the warrant and that was why he was there. Thankfully my mother in law was able to step in and pay the balance off for us so the installer did not put the new meter in. Now I have had five mins to think about things, what the installer told me ran totally opposite to what the telephone operator told me on tuesday. I am still at work at the moment and absolutely livid with EDF about this. I'm hoping someone can give me some insight as to what options if any I have for complaint etc.

I've finally lost the plot with EDF

This letter went to EDF. It speaks for itself. Advice and opinions gladly received. Dear Sirs, In circumstances which warrant a complaint I would normally take the time to write a well-crafted, polite email; however, my patience is exhausted. We have had seven - yes SEVEN - power cuts since October. Seven power cuts in under three months? That's just plain wrong. You're not GIVING us any energy so I can only assume you are taking something and it's quite clear WHAT you're taking. In case you're in any doubt what I'm alluding to: you are taking my time, you are taking my money and you are taking the p*$$. The situation is now beyond inconvenient. It appears we have entered a Dickensian age when I must live by open fire and candle-light, retiring to bed as darkness falls purely to conserve the little body heat I've managed to muster in the course of the evening whilst snow falls mercilessly to the ground outside to rob the last of the warmth from our energy-deprived homes.I would normally work at home of an evening, but this hasn't been possible. In the course of 7 power cuts I estimate I have lost some 35 working hours, chargeable at £35 an hour. Are you willing to recompense the £1225? On phoning your customer services I am repeatedly told that there is a problem with a fuse'. May I refer you to the following website:http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/science/edexcel/electricityworld/m ainselectricityrev1.shtml . It has a simple, easy to understand diagram of the National Grid and fuses. I imagine this would be invaluable to your engineers, whose exemplary training has apparently rendered them incapable of finding a permanent solution to the problem. In the meantime, please be good enough to answer the following questions for which I have conveniently included some multiple-choice answers lest there be any difficulty in forming a response. 1) The recurring problem with the energy supply is a) going to continue recurring and, in letting that happen, EDF energy are consequently agreeing to customers pursuing the matter through the small claims courts for loss of earnings and notifying BBC Watchdog and the Energy Ombudsman of EDF's incompetence and startling lack of professionalism. b) probably going to be sorted because EDF are looking into it and their engineers are giving it their every attention but, because no guarantees can be offered, the clause in answer 'a' still applies. c) going to be resolved swiftly, efficiently, and completely so as to cause no further disruption to energy supplies. 2) The householders who have been affected will: a) have to show some British grit and rally together (possibly huddling in a penguin-like manner in case of further power cuts), resulting in future fond reminiscences of the grim winter of '08/'09. b) receive a courteous but, frankly, superficial conciliatory letter of apology from EDF energy and will thus forward be expected to be content with the action taken, question nothing and resort to answer 'a'.c) receive, as a goodwill gesture, remuneration to recompense for: money spent on coal, batteries for torches, candles, petrol to the various places they have had to go to get hot showers, the additional electricity it has taken to heat their very cold houses back to a respectable temperature, and lost earnings for those who work, in part or full, from home. I await your response, Miss Watson
