In my case my car had metallic paint and alloy wheels which were just optional extras but my insurance company classes them as 'modifications'. The car was written off by flood water entering the engine due to a flash flood on the road while travelling at around 5-10 mph. As far as I can see the metallic paint and alloys are irrelevant to this event. They want to increase my premium by 106 pounds and my excess by 200, so it will cost me 306 in total. This is what they say the cost of my polict would be if I had declared them. Does it not seem a little high? My premium was only 450 so they are saying that alloy wheels would have added nearly 25% to the premium!! I'm just wondering what FSA regulations would apply to this? I didn't think that Insurance companies were allowed to penalise policy holders for minor contractual breaches unless it actually had resulted in a loss to the insurance company. Does anyone know the FSA regulations, I am struggling to find anything but brief overviews on Google. Cheers, Becs

Car written off, what payout?

Hi there I have recently written my car off and AXA are about to offer me a figure for the car. They phoned yesterday asking me what I thought would be acceptable for the car. I mentioned that the insurance certificate had the car valued at 8250 pounds. The car is a VW Passat Estate. Problem with the car is that it was previously German registered, is lhd ( I spend a lot of time in Europe) and is not a model available in the UK so they can't easily value it, (their words). So I am expecting a call on Monday with an offer. How will they calculate this and can I negotiate? I look forward to your replies and advice. The other driver was arrested and interviewed by the police and has admitted fault. I contacted the other party's insurance company but they would not do anything unless their insured can confirm what I say. Unfortunately, the other party has not responded to any correspondent sent to him. I then ask my insurance company to claim on my behalf. After over 8 months, my insurance company is still unable to obtain the correct police report to prove my case. During all this time, they have sent 2 request and only able to obtain the self report completed by me. The police have failed to provide evidence that I was the victim. I must admit, my insurance company has also been absolutely useless. After I made a complaint, the supervisor of the claims department took over my case. She had no idea of the correct procedure in obtaining a police report. Even after spending over £200, they still have no proof who was at fault. Now they were told by the police that due to data protection reason, the interview tape will not be released. It's now gone to the stage where they want to take the case to court which is completely unnecessary. Can someone who works in the insurance company tell me what to do? Thank you.

Cancelled Insurance Policy

Back in April I was driving down the road in my Clio when the bonnet flew open at 60mph and wrote the car off. I Claimed on the insurance, eventually agreed (reluctantly) to a price in late July and received my money minus my £100 excess. Whilst this was going on I didnt buy a new car as 1. Didnt have the money and 2. Use my motorbike as it was nice weather. I was under the impression that the insurance policy was paused until I registered another car to it and certainly received no communication from the insurance company to indicate otherwise. I got myself a new car last month (October) and rang them up to put this car onto my existing policy only to be told that it had been canceled due to me not having a car, but not to worry because they had refunded me my money, minus the months worth of use I got from it (I only took out the policy in March so only 1 months worth). Rang them again today as I could not find any evidence of my money being refunded and they said that it wouldnt be as the claim was my fault. If I had put another car onto the policy within a month it would have been fine but because I took my time as I didnt think there was a rush and wanted a good used bargain they have taken all of my money. So essentially I have paid £400 excess instead of the £100 I signed up for. Can they do this without letting me know? Do I have any recourse? Or is a letter of complaint the most I can do? Many thanks for your help in advance.

cancel car insurance

ive bought a different car and the insurance has increased by £300 but if i go elsewhere i can get it for under £250 but my insurance company want £118 to cancel the policy. My mum has been a named driver on various policies over quite a number of years but she has never actually been a policy holder, therefore my thinking was she had no no claims bonus. Now I know that recently insurers are offering named driver no claims bonuses as well but by my reckoning that would give her at most 2 years. What the broker is saying is, my dads 9 years + no claims is transferable to my mum i.e tranferable between husband and wife. Now to me that doesnt make any sense but im the first to admit im not used to dealing with car insurance. Has anyone heard of this before or had any experience? There is a large bash in the rear quarter panel and deep scratches. The driver owned up to it immediately and we exchanged information. I took all his insurance details. A little while later, while I was digging out my insurance documents, he came back to ask me if I wouldn't mind settling this without getting the insurers involved - i.e. he would pay the cost of all the repairs. He explained that his partner's father owned a bodyshop repair business, which he assured me was reputable. We agreed to let the father have a look at the damage to my car. The father seemed genuine and, after having a look at my car, he said that because the damage was considerable, it would really have to go through the insurer, but that he could assist by arranging this for me. I gave him my details, and I was confident, that this was above-board. This morning, he contacted me to say that he was going to put this through as 'non-fault', or something similar-sounding. Being young, with limited motor-experience (and no previous accidents either caused by me or by someone else), I was a little unsure about what this meant, although he assured me that it would not have any implications for my insurance (such as losing no-claims discount or hikes in future premiums). I agreed, not having any other source of information, but was still nervous about this arrangement. My major concern is that the technician repairing the car is not exactly independent, given his relationship with the other driver, and may have the interests of the other driver at heart. It has been passed onto some sort of accident management company, Accident Claims Scotland Ltd., who are processing the claim on my behalf. They contacted me this morning to advise me of the process; the car will be going in on Thursday for repair, I will meet ACS and their 'Independent Engineer' who will assess the damage and agree the work and cost 'on my behalf', and I will be given a courtesy car. Again, they have assured that there will not be any further implications for my insurance in future. I am still concerned, mainly due to the relationship between the garage and the driver who is at fault, and with what 'non-fault' means/entails. I'm sorry for the length of my post, but I would appreciate any advice that anyone can offer. I called my bank, through which I have access to free legal advice, but I wasn't able to give them all the information they needed. Thanks in advance, Paul , Something else I forgot to mention: at the time of the accident, the driver at fault mentioned that he 'had been drinking' (I guess heavily) the night before. I don't bear any bad feelings towards him, but I need to make sure that this doesn't impact on my chance of getting insurance in future - it is already costly enough when you're 22, male, and drive an Alfa Romeo!!!! :)

Esure - are they rubbish???

My partner has his car insurance through esure, he missed a payment just under three weeks ago and fully intended to pay this when he got paid at the end of this month. Well, moneysupermarket.com research shows that insurers certainly think so. They price according to risk and men pay 71% more than women on average. Of course, this varies according to age - 18-year-old boys will pay more than £1,000 more a year than girls. Read my article 'Why women win with car insurance' for a table showing a more thorough breakdown of the difference in premiums. What does this mean? Are women safer on the roads or do men simply claim more? Could it be that there is no difference in actual driving skill but that men take more risks on the road? What do you think? I have recently purchased a 1.7 ford puma and am looking to insure soon. I am currently on provisional license. I am aged 17. I will have my full license on 1st January 2010. So at the moment I am looking to purchase insurance for the car based on my provisional license (had since aug09). My Quote from Quinn-direct, for this is £1375 and I plan to go through with this. As I plan to pass my test and thus obtain a full UK license 1st Jan 10 (so in just over a month) what will happen to the cost of my insurance? I suppose that quinn direct will just charge me the extra amount (upgrade) in accordance to the extra risk of me having a full uk license? If so, ABOUT how much might this be? I mean, an EXTRA £500, or an extra £2000 or somewhere inbetween? NOTE: If of any interest... If I were to pass and obtain full uk license tomorrow and insure the car under quinn with a full uk license then it would cost £3300. Any help / advice and ideas are much appreciated. Thank you, George.

Do I mention a minor accident which I didn't claim for?

I am about to renew my car insurance. I didn't claim on my insurance for damage to my car, but the 3rd party may have done. I am shopping around online (as I do every year) for insurance. On some sites I am asked whether or not I have had any accidents in the last 4 years, regardless of whether or not I made a claim, and I obviously declare mine. However some sites don't ask this question and just ask simply if I have made a claim, which I haven't. These sites tend to give me a cheaper quote. There is nowhere on such sites to declare such an accident. Do these sites not need to know about my minor accident? Am I OK to go ahead and arrange my insurance through them or am I being dishonest?

held to ransom by swinton car insurance

i was unfortunate to be in a none fault bump over 6 months ago with a neighbour i was fully comp the other driver was at fault he admitted it but his insurance would not give him a curtosy car because he would not say what they wanted him to say i got a letter saying i was a none fault claim my old banger was wrote off over the phone i was offered scrap value for it ..now 6 months down the line my insurance is due. swinton say my price has gone from £245 to £600 and my no claims dropped from 9 years to 3 years because of the ongoing claim even though i have phoned them week after week to push it to court procedure..guilty to proven innocent is what they mean..i have asked them to carry on my insurance at the going rate for 9 years no claims and if and when i get found to be at fault i will pay any other outstanding balance. not the way we work came the reply..again guilty to proven innocent. they wrote my car off over the phone due to its age i could of fixed it myself for £25 they said i cant have a curtosy car as its being written off without it being viewed so why do they take my extra money for fully comp knowing very well there going to write it off even for the smallest of things i cant take my insurance elsewhere as i cant get a no claims paper off swinton due to them taking 6 month to keep doing absolutley nothing i cant afford £600 ..helppppp need swintons ransom money

Urgent help required please

I am new to this site but require some help for my daughter. Its looks as if her car will be written off from the damage caused, she isnt covered for a hire car on her policy and now because of where she lives she cant get the children to school or go to work with no car. She doesnt have the money to just hire a car, she is distraught and as I dont live near I am very upset about it all as well, it was only lucky that she had just got herself and the baby out of the car 5 mins before the lorry hit it. What can she do now for transport, it all seems so unfair? the car was old and although in perfect condition had high milage and I know the insurance will not give her anywhere near enough to buy the same car again, and what does she do in the mean time with no car. If anyone can help with any suggestions I would be very grateful.

Remaining car insurance after accident

hi, i hope i've got this in the correct section, my son had an accident last week and is in the process of going through the claim, the other driver came out of a side road and hit him in the left side wing so it should be a straight forward not at fault claim, the question is about the 6 months or so remaining on his insurance, i thought we would be able to have the insurance froze until the claim is sorted out and he gets another car and then use the insurance on the new car, the insurance company say he cant do this and the insurance policy will keep running until the claim has been sorted. maybe i'm missing something but i dont understand why, if the claim took 6 months to sort out it means hes lost the remaining 6 months he has left on his insurance, an amount that comes to near £900 (his grandmother paid almost £1800 for his years insurance). hopefully someone can add a little light on this for me. many thanks

50-50 settlement uninsured losses?

I had an accident 2 years ago - other driver drove into the back of my car when I was totally stationary at a giveway, so 100% their fault but of course no witnesses and they made up a *** and bull story which eventually led to me having to settle 50-50 That was bad enough but I now learn they are also making a big claim for uninsured losses as well so looks like I am going to be seriously out of pocket too What should I do, and how is this 'uninsured' part allowed to happen??

Insuring another driver on the policy without affecting driver 1's no claims.

Hi, I am the policy holder and owner of the car and my flatmate now wants to have use of the car (which i have no problem with). however, i do not want any crash she has to affect my insurance premium. therefore, is there a way to put another driver on the insurance policy so that if they were to have a crash, it would not affect my premium when i come to renew it (on renewal, i would only be putting myself on the policy as the flatmate only needs to use the car for a few months). They took out a policy last year, paid in full with debit/credit card (don't know which). This year, no reminder/renewal arrived, but they suddenly got letter threatening collection agencies for an amount owing of £112.78 - mother rang to query this and was told it was charges because they (Budget) had cancelled her insurance for non payment after they used card details they had kept for a year in order to renew the policy. She's really worried because (a) she's been driving without insurance, (b) they can't afford it and (c) they are getting nasty letters about it. What can we do? She got NO renewal, NO notification from the bank that they'd bounced a payment, NO letter to say her insurance was even cancelled. The policy (when she rang to sort this) had also gone up to £241 from £184 when there have been no claims or anything, and if they go on the website the quote is £185! They have said they will reduce the £112 to £51 if they re-insure with them! Dad told them to take a hike... Suggestions as to what they can do? I've written a complaint letter for mother to sign and send but what if we have no joy? Or has anyone else had this and knows a good way to get them to cancel this money outstanding?

Problem getting no Claims Certificate

Hi, I am looking for some advice please? My husband and I took a policy with Swinton car insurance, the policy came to an end in March and as we were due to leave the country, we cancelled the policy and returned renewal paperwork. We now want to insure our car outside of the uk, so, my husband contacted them a few weeks ago and asked for the no claims certificate to be sent to my parents house, the agent took the address and said 'no problem, this will get sent out immediately' - great stuff we thought. As of today we still had received nothing so my husband called up only to be told that no certificate would be issued as our 'renewed' insurance policy had received no payment since march and we owe them around £200.00, although she did confirm that yes they had received the paperwork back hence why no payment had been made! She also advised him that the previous agent had made a note on the account that in original call that he had advised my husband of the outstanding debt - which he had not! My husband asked for the call to be listened to to prove that none of this had been discussed and that the agent had issued the certificate - to which he was told they dont record calls.... rubbish. Although we both know that this policy had been cancelled surly they should still have to issue me with my 3 years no claim which took us up until march? Should I contact the ombudsman regarding such a poor service? thanks in advance

Morethan car insurance. This was a no fault claim Accident happened in November 2008. Vehicle was written off imediately ( although we did not get a courtesy car, but thats another story) after months and months of phone calls ( India) we finally had the claim closed and got my excess back ( after chasing, but thats another story!!) Now, this week we get the renewal, and guess what, we have lost all our no claims. I rang the lady up at morethan ( took her 40 mins , on hold) and she told me that because they have not had their money from the other insurance company yet, we have lost our 4 years no claims discount, and it says no fault claim on the letter. So our premium has gone up £250 and also the APR has gone up from 16% to 21% with out them even telling us!!! I bet if i asked to cancel the insurance they will charge me admin charges (£50) and charge me for a no claims letter. I will never recomend morethan insurance to anyone. Absolutely a 12 month nightmare and still ongoing. Just a note, when i was asked to do a survey at the end of the phone call they said it would take 10 minutes so i said yes. I answered the first question with a "poor" then the line went dead. I dont think they wanted to listen to my feelings.

Automatic Renewal

Automatic renewal is spreading amongst us more rapidly than mutated flu strains. Online forums are just beginning to realise the ongoing legal implications relating to the scurrilous practice of automatic renewal, and that it is, as yet, unquestioned by regulatory bodies such as the Financial Service Authority (FSA) and not covered by the Treat Customers Fairly policy. Allowing an insurance policy to auto renew will incur an approximately twenty five per cent rise in the new premium’s cost. The rising popularity of the comparison websites such as confused.com and comparethemarket.com, have made it much easier to escape these massive price hikes in policy premiums. But what you may not know is: if you fail to contact your previous insurer to cancel the policy you may experience the ominous clang of the auto renewal trap on your finances. It will be doubtful if you recoup the total of your losses due to the cancellation fees that kick in after the payment has been taken from your credit card - cancellation periods can vary from company to company and details of these restrictions are usually only available in the small print. Always read your financial junk mail – or it may cost you more than the savings you made online!

car crash in july and the other party not accepting liability

hey i am new to this, but would like some advice if anyone could help. my finace and i were involved in a car crash at the end of july...we were breaking for slowing traffic (1st car), the lady behind us broke too (2nd car)...the lady behind her did not break(3rd car), she smashed into the car behind us and went into a ditch, the lady in the car behind us then went into us... all 3 cars were a write off...(we were going about 10 mph when hit, lady behind us about 30mph- i dont know about the lady behind her but it was a 60mph road.) the police/firebridgade and ambulance service attended... when at the hospital the police came around and took statements off all parties involved... a while later the police came and found us again and said that they had interviewed the lady in the 3rd car under caution for driving without due care and attention...they said that she had admitted that it was her fault and that she had been looking in the back at her children when the crash happened... also the lady in the 2nd car at the scene of crash said she knew that the lady behind her had not been looking. she also said that she had plenty of time to stop her car...which my fiance has agreed to (he was driving) the police then sent us out an accident report form, kind of like a witness statement thing... so we are waiting to see if the 3rd lady gets charged with driving without due care and attention. i had a month off work due to this crash and my fiance and i have been and seen an independent doctor who has recommended that we have 6 sessions of physio. in the meantime direct line (our insurance company) have made my fiances insurance premiums go really high due to the fact they are saying that because the case is still open he has lost his ncb at the moment and when the case is closed he will get reimbursed... he is currently paying £100 pm whereas before the crash it was £60pm. which is quite a big difference per month! so here we are over 2months down the line... and we recieved a letter from direct line saying that they are still chasing the third party for comments on liability and an accident report... direct line informed us that the insurance claim would be coming from the lady in the third car... what i don't understand is how can she be saying that it is not her fault? she admitted to the police that it was her fault....the lady in the 2nd car witnessed her not looking at the road.... so what i am basically asking is how long is it before people have to accept liability? i just feel like this is just dragging on so so much, and quite frankly i would just like it over and done with. does anyone have any advice? we have contacted solicitors by the way, as we have both had to make personal injury claims.. and we have alos had letters off them stating they are waiting on comments on liabilty. thanks sarah xx

is it worth protecting no claims discount

Hi I have just had a renewal for my insurance and it has gone from £300 to £600. I had a claim in February, which was not my fault as someone slammed into the back of me whilst stationery. This has not been settled, the guys insurance company have said they will pay but he will not reply to them. I also had a claim in 1997 (somebody broke into my car at a football match) but registered as a fault claim against me. I have received quotes and More Than are the cheapest (£400) but will not allow me to protect my no claims discount. The next quote is £526 (with protected). I'm wondering if its worth protecting the no claims (I have 8 years) or just going with the quote thats £126 cheaper. Any thoughts, thanks Tony

Change a name on policy..?

Hi! I am a young driver with a provisional driving licence. We (me and my partner) think to buy a car and I would be named on his policy until I'll pass my exam. Because insurance for a female is cheaper, I was wondering if it's possible to change the name on the policy for only mine when I will hold a full driving licence (after about 4 months after insuring the car)..? Or, at least, swap the names around (me for a main driver and a registered owner)..? There is a huge difference in prices in "Quinn Direct" ..(about 400 pound a year). Many thanks ;)
