I am in Poland, Krakow, just spent an afternoon going between cashpoints and banks getting 'transaction denied' messages and bemused expressions from bank staff. Called Nationwide, as you say they seem pretty unconcerned about it, despite having told me categorically in London that I would be able to withdraw money in Poland.
