Collapse of bank brings trauma for Islanders
By Harry McRandle
STORIES of more Islanders who could face losing their savings as a result of the collapse of Icelandic-owned Guernsey bank Landsbanki continue to emerge.
At least four Islanders have been in touch with Jersey ministers to complain about their plight, and more have spoken directly to the JEP after the case of Belinda Gracia was highlighted on Wednesday.
A St Saviour couple in their 50s have invested just under £200,000 in Landsbanki, while a 63-year-old St John resident has about £35,000 in the bank, which has been placed in administration. They are both are concerned about the situation and the fact that there is no deposit protection scheme for those who have invested in Guernsey.
The St Saviour couple wrote yesterday to a variety of senior politicians locally and in Guernsey to complain that their life savings were at risk. Guernsey’s Chief Minister, Lyndon Trott (pictured), responded with news that a potential rescue plan could be under consideration.
He said that work was under way towards developing proposals to be put before the Guernsey States that would involve a bank-funded scheme. ‘Until the outcome of the democratic process is known, it would be irresponsible to speculate as to the decision of our assembly — and in particular as to whether it might be retrospective. My advice, as Landsbanki is now in administration, would be to speak directly with the court-appointed administrator for the latest situation,’ he said in his e-mail to the couple.’
