Avinash1972: I have just got off the phone with Urdur Gunnarsdottir who is the Iceland PM PA.
I have been hassling her for days now and she confirmed to me today that she has brought our plight ie Landsbaki Guernsey depositors to the PM.
He was not aware of us! and did not know that we fall between the cracks of the UK Govt. guarantee.
I am not naive enough to think this will make the blindest bit of difference but it just furtehr proves that we really nee dto get some high level exposure.
The trouble is I do not know we get that.
Any suggestions would be welcome.
I for one will not let go of this until WE ALL GET EVERY SINGLE PENNY BACK.
Well done Avinash1972
I called the Overseas banking number on the Landsbanki webpage on Tuesday (ie Landsbanki in Iceland). I was told we would be covered by the Icelandic authorities, but she would call me back to confirm, of course the call wasn't returned.
I am just wondering if it is worth contacting the EU. I think it was they who encouraged the Guernsey authorities to adopt the taxing system for deposits from EU resident. 75% of the tax goes back to the country of residence, so why is not at least the minimal level of protection, currently 20,000 euros, around 17,000 pounds (34,000 for a joint account) necessary here. This was required for Icelandic Acounts in the UK, so why did the Guernsey Authorities not insist on a passport type system here?
It means that EU residents with offshore bank accounts are paying the same level of taxation as onshore one (well true in the case of the UK) but without any benefit when things go pear shaped.
