maxsteam: "borrow anothr £1000 to ensure i can keep some kind of borrowing going " - you seem to believe that you cannot survive without credit.
Shop credit generaly costs more than using a credit card but the cheapest way to buy many things is to pay cash and ask for a discount. You do not need credit. It is handy to carry a card rather than cash, but you already have a credit card. Balance transfers are not such a good deal these days because many claim to be at 0% then they add on a handling charge of a few percent.
Yes, people should look to borrow money to buy a house but you've already passed that stage. Stop looking to spend your money on credit and start spending it on yourself!
I have to agree. I don't understand why you keep borrowing another £1000 when you get near the end. Surely it showing the account settled would improve your credit rating. You already have a mortagage and a credit card so why do you need to keep some form of borrowing going ? If you can afford £100 a month for electrical goods/furniture etc, try saving up that money in a savings acc and then in 12 months pay cash. If you keep applying for credit you will be leaving footprints of searches on your file which will not help.
Are you on the electoral roll ? Contact the credit ref agencies for advice or look at their websites. I use experian to check mine online regularly.
