    The adviser said that she had made a similar mistake herself, and understood the problem. She said to retain the cancellation e-mails in case of problems. Having told them, and retained the proof of cancellation they said they would not honour payment.

    I have found this approach to work well with other issues, and it is always worth contacting the credit card supplier as it is their reputation at stake too.
