BT line. Do I need one to get connected?

I've just moved into a new flat. New to me, not new as in just built.

I  think I've decided on Utility Warehouse "Broadcall Plus" broadband/phone package, as it seems like the best deal for me. So I phoned them up to get connected, and they ask for my BT phone number. I don't have one. They say I must have a BT number before they can switch me to their service.

My flat has a little BT box (as well as a little NTL box) on the wall, so I'd imagine I would only need it "switched on", no new wires need to be laid. How much would this cost? Is there any alternative?

The only other provider I see has a really good deals is Virgin, but I'd imagine they also need a number....

    Help!
