Excellent thread and some interesting posts within.
I just want to start by saying I am a bloke, I felt I should make that clear because I am going to go against male opinion here. I do not believe that men are being discriminated against when it comes to paying for motor insurance. It is just simple straight-forward underwriter rating, bearing in mind the insurance industry is male dominated wouldn't it make sense that they don't discrimate against themselves.
People posting on here seem to think that women get cheaper premiums just because the total amount of their claims is much less than the total amount of mens claims. I'm sure the calculation is much more likely to be, men incur claims totalling x, men pay insurance premium totalling x+20% for broker and underwriter profit and the same for women. If women are only generating 20% of all claims costs but paying 30% of the total premium then that means the men would be the cause of 80% of the claims but only 70% of the premium.
I think the cheap rates that females can get from the women only insurance companies evidence that they are a less costly risk. It wouldn't make sense that these companies are running at a loss just to discriminate against men.
One of the main arguements by here seems to be that men spend more time on the road and are therefore going to be involved in more accidents but this shouldn't mean they have to pay higher premiums... surely that is exactly what should happen. If a woman spends an hour on the road per day but a man spends 3 hours wouldn't he be the one who is the greater risk!?! Ok you could argue that men have more experience but if they spend more time in the car they are more at risk.
I don't work in motor insurance I work in travel, we charge higher premiums for the elderly, we charge more for going to America this does not mean we are discriminating against elderly people or persons going to USA it is just statistically proven that there is more risk for these catagories and therefore they are rated accordingly.
Based on the above it's my opinion that men aren't discriminated against.
