Thanks for your views.  I can safely say that the ST has definitely been crossed off the list - 17 mpg - I can't believe that - shocking!

Focus ST heavy on fuel, I used one for a week and couldn't get more than 17MPG average. Too tempting. Sounds great with the turbo'd five-pot. Good points above CK, but I firmly believe that buying a car such as the ST or Type R is emotional, not rational. So, Subaru Sam, get your ass in the drivers seat and see which you prefer driving.

My advice from experience and the choices you have posted would be the Honda civic type R, good quality reliable engineering, with plenty of oooomph.

I've got a Subaru Impreza Sport which is getting on a bit and I'm looking to change it.  Problem, is I'm not quite sure what to go for - all I do know is I want something with a bit of oomph!   Test drove a BMW 118d which was a nice car but just not sure it's worth the cash and whether I'll still be happy with it a few months down the line.   Been thinking about Honda Civic Type R (earlier version) or may be going back to the trusty Impreza (I've never had any problems with it for the 5 years I've had it and has sailed through all its MOTs).  I'm not a Ford fan, however, the Focus ST caught my eye but have read it's really heavy on the fuel consumption.   Problem is I don't know anyone who owns these types of cars to get an honest opinion, hence the reason I'm humming and hawing over making a decision!  Any feedback appreciated.
