This is something that needs to be reviewed by her local authority. Not something I have had much to do with, but my understanding is that whenever there is any change, you need to inform the local authority, so they can adjust any benefits paid.

Attendance allowance and living in a care home.

My mother moved into a care home a while ago and was self funding out of income. She has a long term care policy which paid out and combined with higher rate attendance allowance and her pension she could just about meet the fees. The home charges £555 a week for self funders. However she has now been assessed by Social services who have agreed she needs 24 hour care and have agreed to take over the arrangments with her being placed at the home. In these circumstances the fees reduce to £420 a week as this is what the home charges local authority placed (and usually funded) clients and the financial calculation is that my mother will continue to pay the full amount (the home does not charge a top up fee). My query is whether my mother will lose her attendance allowance. Although Social services are not going to be paying a contribution to the fees my mother is benefiting financially from paying the lower fees so I wondered if this became some sort of notional benefit meaning that she would lose AA.

Any views and advice would be welcome.
