I've no experience of OVO but I would trust most companies more than British Gas. Yes, I think you've done the right thing.

These days most call centre calls are recorded but they never seem to be able to find the record when it's something that works against them.

    hi max

    thanks for your response!

i was thinking the same thing although it was a british gas salesman who was phoning me... he was very keen to stress that "the calls were being recorded so any information given was genuine"....

i eventually wasn't convinced and told him so... sticking with ovo. do you think i did the right thing?

Yes. That's why you got the information by phone rather than in writing. Anything that's not in writing should be taken with a pinch of salt unless it's from a British Gas salesman in which case it can be ignored.

utility supplier incentives - bad choice? smoke and mirrors? confused!

    hey folks

ive been in my house now for 2 years and have been supplied with gas and electricity by british gas.

always keen to get a better deal i recently ran a comparison of providers based on my previous years fuel consumption.

i was quoted a better deal from ovo, who i understand are one of the smaller suppliers, of around £130 so decided to apply as ive always read the switching process should be easy and is (generally) worthwhile.

im confused now as i received a call from british gas today offering me "loyal" and "valued" customer incentives to stay to the value of £200 (£100 paid after 3 months / £100 paid after 12 months), 100 nectar points and an "energy smart meter" to monitor my consumption. the salesman was also arguing that british gas are yet to announce their price reduction for gas supply and therefore i would be likely to save further when this takes place.

receiving all this information unexpectadly over the phone today was a bit difficult to digest... i asked the saleman to tell me the total difference in savings between switching based on todays prices, this was about £14... i opted to move suppliers as i have already applyed and there are penalty charges of £30 per fuel, so £60 for gas and electricity.

based on what ive been told by british gas today switching to fixed rate deal with ovo may have been a bit unwise given reduced gas prices are due to be announced!!! however, im sceptical that the reductions would be significant enough to really make any difference.

this is the first time ive tried switching fuel suppliers and i must admit im finding it pretty stressful trying to understand where the best deal is!

any views, help or advice would be welcome...

    thanks

    l
