I know True Traveller Insurance allows it as my sister had the same problem after coming back from Japan. They just ask where you're normally resident, not how long you've been in a particular place for. They even cover you if you've already left!

Try worldwideinsure.com, Worldnomads.com, who operate online and are international, rather than restrictive to travellers out of the UK.

If he would be repatriated to the UK in the event of an accident/medical issue, see if an Travel Insurance broker knows which Insurers may be able help. Google Travel Insurance broker to find a number of them. world-first.co.uk appear to be able to help.

My son has the same problem getting insurance because he has only been in the country for 4 months. If you take Healthcare insurance you won't be covered for anything else will you. What do you do about theft or missed flights etc?

    Re: Backpacker Travel Insurance

It's not travel insurance you need, it's health insurance. I have been living abroad for the last few years, not working - essentially travelling at leisure. Travel insurance doesn't cover such long trips away from the UK where, like you, I am still resident.

To have no insurance is pure folly. I pay around £1500 a year for a 'cast iron' policy - cheap compared to being caught out with no insurance and serious injuries to pay for.

I wont bore you with horror stories, suffice to say that being uninsured is a fools game.

confirm that we are still residents here!

The dictionary definition is just something like where you live. Different organisations interpret this in different way (the tax man will, for example, say that you are UK resident). If you are asked to confirm that you are UK residents, just tick the box.

    Backpacker Travel Insurance

    Hi,

Both my girlfriend and I are British, with UK passports and registered with a GP. However, we came back from a year travelling at the end of May, and are off to New Zealand for another year in early November and all the travel insurance policies I have seen specify that to be a UK resident we have to have been in the UK for 6 months in the last 12, which we haven't. I've spoken to them and they say they can't cover us as we've only been in the UK for 5 months despite being British and having our homes here etc.

Could someone please either recommend a policy that would cover us, or (even better) confirm that we are still residents here!

    Thanks in advance
