    Re: confused about consumption

You can shop around, but have no evidence based on your current accommodation to work with. I think the best thing is to go with the current supplier for now, and shop around in 6 months or a year when you have some history. Monthly payments are no guide to consumption, and you have no experience of living in an electicicity only property.

    confused about consumption

Hi guys, just looking for a little advice as I'm considering switching supplier.

I lived in a 2 bedroomed (terraced) rented house (just my daughter and myself) from December 2010 until beginning of this month. Was with E.on although cant remember which tarriff. Phoned to find out today what my energy consuption had been, they gave me a figure of 3101 units for electricity (based on a year) and for the gas i've used 7253 units (based on a yearly figure). The lady I spoke to said she could only give the yearly figures, not sure why, but anyway, the readings over the year had been actual readings. The house was always cold despite using the GCH alot, there were drafts coming from all the doors and windows. Most things were left on standby constantly too (fridge and freezer, washer, phones, tv, dvd player, sky, wii, lamps etc)

Just moved into a 2 double bedroomed apartment, my daughter and myself. It only has electricity, no gas. Im pretty sure its not storage heating though! Previous suppliers were ScottishPower. I think there were 3 adults living in the property. SP tell me that the previous 12 months electricity used was 11045 units.

I'm expecting to use quite a bit more electricity due to having no gas but I was wondering if 11045 units is seen as low/moderate or high usage for an electricity only property.

I work shifts as a nurse so i dont have any kind of routine as to when I'm home. The only appliance that is left on standby constantly is the fridge freezer, nothing else is switched on when i'm out or overnight. The apartment does feel pretty warm for this time of year, i've not yet had to use the heaters.

I've never lived in an electricity only property before so I cant estimate what my usage may be. At the moment i will be paying £49 per month with SP, does this seem like a low payment in view of the previous tenants using 11045 units over the year??? I dont want my Direct Debit to be increased to a very high amount once I start giving my own meter readings! (I dont have the meter in the property by the way, I have to ask the guy that works down at reception to get them for me).

Also, am I best waiting for another couple of weeks and after gaining an actual reading before considering switching or should I go ahead now and look into it?

Thanks in advance for any advice

    Jo
