Many thanks for this - I will go back to his insurers and negotiate!

You need to ask the insurer and, perhaps, ask them to pay all costs.

Generally speaking, if you want to scrap a car, you phone up a scrap yard and, as long as at least two wheels go round, they will collect it and make a payment. This payment may be just £30 for an old MOT failure, but there's certainly no costs to pay. There will be costs for moving the vehicle from the accident to where it is now and there will be storage costs but, in my view, these costs should be paid by the insurer.

I expect you will need to enter into negotiations until you come to a value (and deductions) that you feel are reasonable.

    Car insurance salvage costs

My car (4 year old Ford Fiesta 1.2L 19,000 miles) was involved in an accident last Monday. The person who crashed into the back of my car has accepted liability. The car has now been declared a "total loss" by his insurers, QBE. QBE have today offered me "pre-accident value" of £3,865.00 for my car, minus £950 SALVAGE COSTS, so the cheque from QBE would only amount to £2,880. Could someone please tell me what "Salvage Costs" iinvolves as obviously now that the car has been declared a "total loss" it is unroadworthy which means the MOT and insurance will now be invalid, therefore I cannot legally drive it on the road to take it anywhere for salvage. The car is currently at QBE's preferred repairer.
