Re: Escape of water claim - advice wanted

The issue is that if they only replace some of the damaged items, we'll be left with a mismatch of colours. The doors match the base units in colour - which isn't obtainable now. if they replace some of the base units with white ones, it shows round the edge of the doors and will look very odd.

I've found my answer on the insurance ombudsman site if anybody else has this issue - advise to look there.

    Thank you for your replies.

You already said that the doors were not damaged by the flooding. Are you under the impression that the insurer should pay for items which have not been damaged by the flooding?

Thanks for the reply. I think the thing is that the base units are in a colour that isn't supplied any more and it shows round the edge of the doors. Sort of imagining a mismatch of units, some of which new but with used looking doors on. I guess I'll have to negotiate with the builder. You take out insurance to protect you from floods - what I didn't imagine was having to fork out hundreds of pounds to go back to having a serviceable, reasonable kitchen I suppose.

Re: Escape of water claim - advice wanted

In the good old days they would have replaced the whole thing and no questions asked. I once claimed for a damaged couch and they replaced the whole suite.

These days things are more competetive. Kitchen unit doors are standard for the most part, so I don't understand why you don't want the old ones back. If they are shabby and you just want a nice new look you can't expect the insurer to pay for it because it isn't the result of damage.

I would let the builder do his work and maybe you might be able to do a deal with him for some new doors. Alternattively you could just replace them yourself afterwards.

Escape of water claim - advice wanted

We had an escape of water in our kitchen - the floor area had 1 to 2 inches of water from a leak.

Can anybody advise what we can expect from our home buildings insurance for this?

At the moment they are offering to replace the floor and some of the base units and the end panels but none of the doors. I'm concerned as we will have to pay for the doors, the base units they won't replace and all of the wall cupboards to match. The doors are undamaged but I can't see us putting old doors back onto new base units.

I had a schedule from the builders which they've asked me to sign and return - by doing so am I agreeing that I think this is fair? Or I am just agreeing for the work to be done and this is a guideline? Or do I need to negotiate with the loss adjuster or insurance company?

Any advice would be much appreciated.
