I switched away from British Gas to EON and a fixed tariff earlier this year using this switch comparison site. I've just got my first bill in from EON and my electricity has increased by >40%!! Using the price comparison site again, three months later, I am told that if I switch back to BG, I could save £90 per year. Switching to another provider could save £237. This system is just plain crazy. Short of spending every day on the internet checking tariffs and changing providers every couple of months, the only ones who win are the providers.
