My understanding is that these matters can take many months, if not a few years to fully resolve. BUT I have heard of Insurers making interim payments to deal with any current needs that you might have, if there is no question about liability. If you do have urgent immediate needs, you might have to go to court to start the process.
If your lawyer is not working for you in an acceptable way, , if they don't respond after giving them a couple of reminders, find out what the companies complaints procedure is. There may be contact details of the Lawyers management, that you can contact, just to ask them to make sure your case is being given relevant priority.
