I can't answer your exact question. One of the (many) consumer problems with credit reference is you give permission for a lender to search your credit file but you don't know how they weight what they find.

There is quite a lot about linked addresses in the Experian FAQs. Worth a look.

A different way of answering your question is that you are entitled to your credit file being 100% accurate. Nothing more nothing less. The Experian FAQ explains how to challenge linked addresses you don't agree with.

Re: Car finance but bad address history

I understood this was pretty standard in that they take their own data and scoring into account. In this case, they said that my risk factor from a lack of decent electoral roll and address update information is high, although I otherwise score well with them. This means I will not automatically get a loan they had to go through to their lending team. The lending team will not even look at an application apparently if the account has been over it's limit or had payments refused within the past 3 months. In my case, I failed this first test as the account has been over the limit 3 times in 6 months.

My credit file has a number of linked addresses that have nothing to do with me on it. I have asked for these to be removed (some of the addresses don't even exist). Could this be a factor?

...There are no late payment markers as the overdraft was cleared as soon as salary went in and so the current account shows a good rating with no negative markers at all...

That is interesting and (after examining Experian Help) - correct.

While this won't bring the immediate progress you are looking for, if a current account bank considers account conduct not shared with the credit reference agencies, to your disadvantage, that would be a good reason to ditch the bank (assuming you are able to transfer your overdraft).

My bank won't lend as I went into an unauthorised overdraft 3 times in the past 6 months,

I'd hazard a guess that that is the main reason you have been declined by CreditPlus and that the "3 addresses" explanation is uninformed conjecture on the part of the person you spoke with. I stand to be corrected but I would not expect CreditPlus to get all your raw data, more likely they would pay for a "rating".

It's going to take time for the overdraft late payment markers to stop counting against you. Unless you have strong views on being a credit card "refusenik" I'd try for a credit card as soon as possible and keep it's conduct squeaky clean. The best way of doing that is to set up a Direct Debit for the minimum payment.

There are no late payment markers as the overdraft was cleared as soon as salary went in and so the current account shows a good rating with no negative markers at all so I don't believe it's anything to do with that.

I will get a credit card just to build up a history but that won't solve the problem of getting credit for a car in the next few weeks.

I will pop along to a local dealership and see what options they might have. I was hoping though that there was somewhere reputable on line that would issue the loan against the car so I could get all the administration stuff out of the way before going to get a car.

    Thanks for the advice guys!

Yes, I've viewed the report and all seems in order. My bank won't lend as I went into an unauthorised overdraft 3 times in the past 6 months, mainly through idleness on my part as I didn't think it would have too much of an effect - swallow the charges type thing so my bank is not an option.

I didn't notify my bank in all instances until a month or so after. Their scoring system tells a similar tale, I have a good rating with them so far as my credit profile is concerned but not on my address history.

Credit plus said that there was nothing bad showing on my report and so that is a positive.

Re: Car finance but bad address history

A few other posters to this site had been in the same position. They found a local independent garage that could arrange finance, was the only one who could help. So if you have a decent local independent ( not ford/vauxhall) garage who sells cars and is able to arrange finance on a car you want to buy from them, that might be worth a go.

Have you personally checked your own Experian and/or Equifax Credit Report? If not, you should do so now and check it for errors and omissions. When you moved did you notify your current account bank on each occasion?

Is it true you don't have a credit card? That is entirely up to you but the downside has been pointed out.

While you need to be careful about multiple applications how would your current account bank view a personal loan application?

Car finance but bad address history

I've been turned down for credit with CreditPlus. The reason given is that my electoral roll information on my credit file is incomplete over the past 6 years (although I am showing now) and I have moved addresses 3 times in 3 years. I don't own my own home but earn a good salary and can more than afford the payments. CreditPlus stated that they believed the failure was due to me moving house so often and that I only have a current account showing on my credit file and have had no credit history showing payments.

I have to purchase a car for a new job and can easily afford up to £300 per month but have no idea what product/company to go with who is likely to be able to help me finance a car.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Thanks...
