Hi. 'Expat Brit' looking for UK car insurance advice, please:
I’m a 66 year old UK-born citizen/passport holder, resident ‘full time’ in France since 2005. Likewise my wife, 65. We are both ‘retired’ - formerly UK local authority professionals.
I have had French (AXA France) ‘fully comp’ insurance (on a UK RHD drive car, now French registered) for all this period.
As my wife and I now plan to spend more time in the UK - say 3 - 4 months a year – we are thinking of buying a UK car – say a 1.6 Focus or Megane - for use in the UK. The car would be based and garaged at my daughter’s home in NE Wales; for the foreseeable future we would not have a ‘permanent’ UK address.
When last resident in the UK we both owned cars, and had maximum NCD on UK policies. We have both had (clean) UK driving licences for over 40 years, and have had 'no claims' either in the UK, France or anywhere else in at least the last 25 years. My currrent NCD in France is 'maximum'.
We frequently hire cars when visiting the UK, but have now decided it may be more economic to buy a used car than to rent over extended periods.
Will I be able to buy UK private car insurance for myself and my wife; and if so, from whom, please?
‘Guzziman’, SW France (I also have a ’72 Moto Guzzi!)
