    Re: Car Log Book Problem

You can deal with DVLA to obtain a copy V5 in your name. This is a reasonably lengthy process (last time I did it, it took about 7-8 weeks) and you will need to provide clear proof of purchase / ownership to become the registered keeper.

As an aside, garages can register a car (and while I don't know the ins and outs) and class them as pre-registered so they can sell it cheaper than the equivalent 'New' car. There are some tax implications on their part and therefore they aren't supposed to sell them with 3 months of registration. This could be the underlying reason behind your delayed (maybe not missing?) V5.

Before contacting DVLA, I would be inclined to go back to the supplying dealer and try to get someone who knows what they're talking about... the V5 may just be on its way to you just now....?

    Hi

Have a look at the following link. If you scan down the page there is an independent motor codes helpline.

I don't think it is illegal to sell a car without possession of the log book, but when they sold you the car, they may have breached your consumer rights if they misled you in any way.

You can further check your consumer rights with Consumer Direct.

    Car Log Book Problem

I purchased a new car (Already Registered) in June from a garage, according to the sales team it had 10 miles on the clock however it had 149 miles on the clock (No great problem) however three months on I have not received the log book, I have contacted the garage where I brought the car from and they say that the car was part of a bulk purchase from another trade location and that they have not passed the log book on to them, The tax is due in March next year so there is time to try and sort this out, my question is, is it legal for the garage to sell the car to me without the correct documents and where do I stand if come next year I do not have the log book?
