Display in the advert that you are willing to accept cash only. If they are seriously interested about buying and don't have the full amount on them, then take a 10% cash holding deposit or whetever you're happy with and only let them collect the car once they return with the full balance in cash.

If you did bank the cheques, I would bet they will eventually bounce at a later date even after initially appearing to be cleared... and your bank would charge you.

Dodgy cheques received when car advertised on auto trader

Put an advert on auto trader to sell my car, started to receive emails from people showing interest in the car and wanted more recent pictures. After sending more pictures four different people wanted to purchase the car for a client and would organise a shipping company to come and collect the car. The shipping date would of been arranged when I had received a cheque through the post and deposited the cheque/bankers draft. Made them aware of other interest and would be sold on a first come, first served basis. When I questioned them about name, address, phone number, who there company was, etc. they would avoid answering. In the mean time, received 3 cheques and 1 bankers draft, totalling up to ten times the worth of the car. This has totally put me off selling my car on auto trader now any suggestions on a better, safer and more honest way of selling my car??
