    Re: Price Protection 2012

    Hi Rogcal,

Yes, people thought I was nuts when I signed up in 2005, but it certainly was worth it; but now they're taking the mickey! I certainly hope more people see this, and see their ploy of sending out reminders late will 'encourage' people to leave things as they are, I glad I didn't and would ecnourage others to look around to! Thanks, Bettysman

    Re: Price Protection 2012

I opted out of the offer to go on this tarriff and had a look around at what else was on offer but before that I did a comparison between what I had paid on the price protection 2010 fixed rate deal in the previous 12 months and what I would be paying on PP2012.

Using 14235 kwh consumption on PP2010 I had paid £990 for the year and for the same consumption on PP2012, I would have had to pay a staggering £1506, an increase of £516.

As I said, I'd opted out and I'm now on their BG's standard tariff but not for long, as I've switched to OVO's one year fixed rate which when using last year's consumption figure of 14235 kwh, gives a cost of £1154 which is a saving of £350 on BG's PP2012 tariff.

I'm well pleased that I fixed with BG 5 years ago but it looks as though they are trying to claw those savings back through their "limited" offer of PP2012 to their old PP2010 customers.

I hope that the rest of the ex PP2010 customers see through BG's little ploy!

I think you're right: having had a look, I can't see how they can justify adding 4%. Think they're taking their customers for granted!

    Cheers,

    Re: Price Protection 2012

There are plenty of much better deals out there eg EON Fixonline v8 (which offers big discounts on fixed prices until July 2011 ie 15 months) - can't believe things are going to deteriorate that much in a further 9 months to make BG "offer" viable.

    Re: Price Protection 2012

Hi! I am also coming to the end of my 2010 deal, but feel that a 4% surcharge isn't realistic. I only received my reminder on Saturday 24th April, and the deal ends on 30th. Think they're hoping people will just stick at such a late stage. Probably the best idea is to opt-out and then look around. The 4% aint good value I don't think..... anybody else have other comments? Thanks, Bettysman.

    Santabob:

So the question is - should I go with this offer or switch.

There is no black and white answer. 2 year deals are not common on the open market but 1 year deals are and (in exchange for a 1 year tie-in) are usually priced at below the supplier's standard rate. So I don't think a 4% premium is good customer value for a 2 year tie-in.

My advice would be to benchmark current 1 year deals and if you particularly want a fixed rate, take your pick. Alternatively go for a online standard tariff and defer the decision.

    Price Protection 2012

I am coming to the end of my current contract (Price Protection 2010) and BG have offered 2 years protection at a 4% surcharge over their "Current Standard Tariff". This will mean my bills rising to about £1200 a year.

Comparison sites show I could save a couple of hundred quid over this at current rates, but.... I see on this site that increases may well be on the way.

So the question is - should I go with this offer or switch.
