    Re: Router questions

    Hi Brom2,

Do you have broadband at the moment or is it a dial up service?

Broadband services usually use either an external modem or router. If you have a look at the cable that runs between the computer and the telephone socket are there any boxed connected along the way or does it go straight into the back of your computer?

    Thanks,

    Andrew

    Re: Router questions

The one computer is plugged straight into a phone jack so I assume we're using a modem - but I don't know which one. It was supplied by Tiscali (before it became TalkTalk).

    Re: Router questions

    Hi Brom2,

Could you let me know what router/modem you are using at the moment? Was it supplied by TalkTalk? If so then I can either go through wirless set up for you on here or you'll be able to register and post at www.talktalkmembers.com/forums where we can go through set up with you and answer any questions you may have regarding your TalkTalk account.

    Cheers

    Em x

    Re: Router questions

If your PC is connected directly to the phoneline/internet, you will need a router (which is essentially a type of exchange) so you can connect to your mac and other PC's.

    Re: Router questions

Yes, a router would be the best way forward - these allow multiple Computers to be connected to the internet simultaneously - and to share data if you like...

Setting them up is childsplay - you simply need to ensure that you have network ports in each device (a network card may be necessary in an older PC) - Plug the whole lot together - run the "wizzard" software and start browsing

You may wish to consider a "wireless" router to use on your laptop - slightly more complex to set up but still simple

    Router questions

We already have a PC connected to broadband. We would like to connect a Mac computer and a laptop PC to broadband too. Is this easy to set up? Do we need a router to allow all 3 computers access to our broadband connection?

Any help for a clueless computer user would be much appreciated!
