I liken it to a caveman who was suddenly zapped from his cave in the Midlands to New Zealand - and he is forced to walk home - how would he know which direction to walk in ?

They were sent to the other side of the galaxy rather than the universe. Using maths and pulsar stars which all have unique pulse frequencies. If you know where those starts are in relation to your destination it should be possible to get you heading in the right direction.
