I have received nothing from them stating this or asking for money previously, are they in the right or can i fight this as i dont have £175 to pay it.
If the subscription is for a minimum period of 12 months, you will have to pay the amount due. If you don't they could pursue you by going to court. Also such a default could appear on your credit record and be viewed each time you applied for new credit or new employment!!!!
Although you paid monthly this was not a monthly contract during the first 12 months. As you stopped paying the monthly amount, they would of course have stopped the service.
I would suggest you pay up to avoid hassle from debt collection companies and any embarrassment.
