Re: Buying a second car - insurance

    mylilangel:

This is a bit difficult to answer as it depends on alot of details.

You should phone the Halifax to get advice and a quote to see roughly what the cost would be. They can probably give you a quote if you know which year/model you are buying, without the reg no.

I don't know the way in which Halifax operate. Can they add the new car to your current policy and charge a pro-rata additional premium? Or do you have to have a new annual policy for the new car? If so what 2nd car/policy discount do the Halifax offer. You obviously want to maintain the current policy until January to get the 4 yrs NCD. The Halifax can transfer the NCD to the Honda if this makes sense. The Honda is not necessarily more expensive to insure that the vectra, just because it is newer. Halifax can give you quotes to see which car you would be better having the NCD against to obtain the cheapest premium. If Halifax are not competitive for the car left without NCD for a new annual policy, get other quotes.

If you end up with separate policies, with different renewal dates, you would have to check whether it is cheaper to cover with the same Insurer or not. If you have 2 policies with an Insurer, they will often allow a 2nd car discount, but whether this is cheaper than having 2 policies with different insurers you will have to find out. It depends on what their base premiums are and what 2nd car discount amount is.

Alot of cars are jointly owned between husband and wife. The main driver should be the policyholder and the V5 registration should ideally match, showing the same person as being the registered keeper.

    Hope this helps.

Buying a second car - insurance

I am aware that this topic has been discussed quite a few times and have been through various threads, but need some clarification please. I own a Vauxhall Vectra 1998 with me as the main driver and my wife as the named driver, currently insured with Halifax for the last 2 years. I have 3 years no claim bonus, going to be 4 years coming January. I am planning to buy a used Honda accord 2-3 year old which again both of us would be using; my wife would be the one who would be driving it more often. Reading the previous threads, the options would be:

    1. My wife shops around for a policy for the Accord as the main driver which offers her no claim discount ( Admiral, direct line?? ) even though she has been a named driver and I join on her policy as the named driver this time. That sounds simple and best as long we get such a policy.
    2. I transfer my no claim bonus to the new car as the main driver; my wife joins me as an additional driver. In that case, I loose my NCB on the old vectra obviously. Should I then make my wife the main driver on the vectra or leave it as it is. Also, if I do make her the main driver, do I have to change the ownership/ registered keeper status on the V5 registration document, or will the insurance companies accept her as the main driver even though I am the registered owner.
    3. If I do do all these complex swaps before my renewal in January 10, would Halifax allow me to transfer my NCB to the new car midway through the policy possibly to another insurance company whichever is cheapest? Does that mean they will cancel my existing policy and ask me to start afresh a new policy without NCB for another year, or the existing policy continues but I pay the difference and admin charges for transferring out the NCB? Is it allowed to change the main driver / named driver status midway through the policy year?

Sorry for the long post, but I will really appreciate if I can have some advice from the really helpful experts on this forum please.
