Cover if we have to travel back early to accompany my mum if she's ill?

My mum, me and my husband are going to NY next month. Does anyone know what travel insurance companies would cover costs for me & my husband if we had to cut our trip short due to my mum falling ill while she was there and she had to come home with us accompanying her? I've already found a good quote for her pre-existing medical condition and assumed that if we went with the same company that they'd cover my husband and I, but they don't.

    ElaineB:

This would be difficult as Insurers could believe that you were aware of the risk when you booked the holiday. You would need to phone Insurers for quotes to cover the three of you as a group. The details would need to be referred to underwriters, who would look at the risk to decide on whether they could cover and if so the endorsement terms/premium applicable.

To decide on this the Insurers would need to ask quite a few questions about your mums medical condition, to determine how likley the trip would be curtailed, as well as medical costs etc.

If you look at the post office Travel Insurance site, there is a freephone number. Give them a call to run through the quote basics. They may need further medical details, so you may have to speak to your mum and then give them a call back.

Thanks Huckster. I'll try the Post Office and let you know how I get on. Elaine.

Hi Huckster. The Post Office quoted my mum in the early hundreds but wouldn't cover her if she did become ill with the condition which she spent 1/2 hour going through with them for their medical screening. I've been finding this with all companies I've tried apart from the one I mentioned before. So, they obviously wouldn't cover my husband and I.

This morning I bought policies for the 3 of us with Medici Travel who were the only company I could find that do cover my mum for her pre-existing condition including cancellation, hospital/medical bills, flying her home, accom, etc all for £148 single trip. They will only cover me and my husbands' costs if its not related to the condition. I've given up trying to find a company who would. Medici were pretty competitive for us though, £105 for us both for an annual worlwide policy.

    Thanks again, Elaine.
