No. There is a fault somewhere, or another fuse box/consumer unit connected to the meter if you can see the disc moving. Unfortunately you get to pay for whatever the meter records so you, the supplier and/or an electrician need to find where the electricity is going.

    Hi

I would phone Eon and see what services they provide to have your electric system checked. I believe that some companies offer free electric system safety checks. If electricity is still being used when the fuse box is switched off, this may be seen as a safety issue.

I would guess that you live in a flat or department? I have a theory that in some flats, some of the wiring is not as it should be, leading to a sharing of electric costs between flat owners? We found that for our Aunts flat she was paying for communal lights which were connected to her fuse box. As this was costing a fair bit, we turned off the electric when she was not there.

    Hi Rocky200,

If everything is off there is no way the meter should still be clocking, you’re right to raise this with E.ON. Before you do just double check everything is off, no fridges or freezers still on, appliances on standby, microwave displays etc.

There are cases where meters are crossed with other properties, hucksters theory is correct, this happens more often in flats, especially when meters are in communal spaces.

    Is the meter communal?

If so when you turn everything off are there any meters that stop? Then start going again when you turn appliances back on? This is a test you can carry out yourself. And it may highlight which meter yours has been mixed up with.

If you call E.ON to discuss this, an appointment can be made for an engineer to visit you and test the meter and establish the problem. The meter should then be changed accordingly.

    Rocky

Is there a garage/outbuilding with a light and/or appliances that may be connected directly to the meter box ?

As Brian from Eon suggests, give them a call.

Re: help electric meter still recording when everything turned off at fuse box

Yes, I am renting an industrial unit and the meter is in my name but the downstairs units have also been connected to the meter to save them arranging their own supplies for the sake of a few units each month. That was fine until one tenant decided to leave heaters on 24/7 to dry some dampness....

You should indeed look around for another fuse box/consumer unit. If it's in the garage, it may only have one or two fuses/MCBs. There should really be one switch that turns everything off but it is not impossible that you will have to find a second fuse box/consumer unit before you can turn everything off.

    Hi Rocky200,

I saw your tweet - have the responses so far helped or would you like us to ask an inhouse expert for their opinion?

If it's sorted, do let us know what the resolution was :)

    Thanks,

    Felicity
