Re: New boiler costs??? Advice please

We had a replacement Worcester condensor boiler fitted 3 years ago - Including Power Flush (for which British Gas want £200 alone) for £1800.

is the 5 year warranty backed by insurance or is it a manufacturers warranty ?

Since - if not - and the fitters go out of business - you have no comeback - so don't choose due to this.....

    Hello,

I think kev2006n and ATM are absolutely right when they say get several quotes - that really is the best way to guarantee you are getting the right price for the work. We can provide anecdotal evidence but that won't be as useful as a number of independent quotes for the work.

I imagine with the boiler down you just want to move as quickly as possible to get it sorted but seeking quotes will give you peace of mind that you are not paying more than you should.

Let us know how you get on.

    Felicity

Re: New boiler costs??? Advice please

I did discover the main reason for the cost was rebuilding a flue in the middle of the house and getting ventilation back to the boiler. He tried to keep the boiler in the same place. In the end we moved the boiler upstairs into a cupboard that was already there and was fitted on an outside wall next to one of the bathrooms. Again this proved a very easy solution for the condensation. I have to admit it does depend on the chap that comes to give an estimate. Obviously some are switched on and are looking how to cut costs others are just plodders and don't use that organ between their ears. I did do a lot of research to work out what was possible and felt quite knowledgeable by the end of the whole process. I know one of my neighbours in exactly the same style house did pay over £8,000. He did get British Gas to do it for him. I knew there would be a lot of movement in prices. I think the main thing is to ask others, do research and keep getting quotes until you feel comfortable.

When you get the quotes, it's worth asking for a breakdown between labour and parts. People need to make a living but £9600 would either have involved 2 months' work, gold plated pipes or "main dealer" hourly rates.

Re: New boiler costs??? Advice please

I would shop around for quotes. When we replaced our boiler and various upgrades 2 years ago the range of quotes was mind blowing. The cheapest was £2,500 and the dearest £9.600. It did involve relocating the boiler from downstairs and moving it upstairs. In the end the quote we accepted was £2,800 as they came up with the best solution, power flush, new thermostatic valves on 14 radiators etc.

Re: New boiler costs??? Advice please

The chap said it's a 'quotation' and includes a flush and repiping described as follows:

If I don't want the piping to be unsightly, would have to run though the porch roof which is separate to the roof above the kitchen where the boiler is located. Looks like it could be a days work just for the repiping. Otherwise the easier and cheaper way would have been to just run the pipe around the building in plain sight.

I'm also liking the 5 year warranty that's included.

But as you suggested will fish around for a couple more quotes.

Thank you for your time and helpful advice all!

    Cloverfield,

Sorry, I didn't read the full description of the Baxi Platinum boiler. As Jalexa pointed out this is the best in the Baxi Range and has a good 5 year warranty included.

A good price to pay for the boiler is £957 inc VAT and flue for about £35

I would revise a fair estimate to be about £1600 to £1800 inclusive if you order the boiler yourself, if not the full retail price is £1600 just for the boiler

    Cloverfield:

Do you think that's a reasonable quote?

I think that's a reasonable ball-park quote. Obviously I can't tell whether its an "estimate" or a "quotation" and whether it includes a power-flush or whether that is extra. Always look out for the possibility of extras. For example, as someone else posted, is it easy to run the 22mm pipe and will it be run where you want it, perhaps out of sight?

Its good that you are happy with the description of the work. I'd get a quote or two but don't get hung-up on just the numbers. Others may suggest a much cheaper boiler, the Platinum is top of the (Baxi) range.

    Cloverfield:

    Thank you both.

I was quoted £2300 yesterday for the work described above. It's a straight combi replacement and the chap is Gassafe registered and he very helpful and talked me through every step from what was wrong with the old boiler to what and how the new would be fitted.

Do you think that's a reasonable quote?

    thanks again

£2300 would be a reasonable quote if comparing to British Gas prices, but I think you should at least attemp to get 2 or 3 further quotes for this work.

I was a Landlord and had 2 combi boilers upgraded to condensing combis 18 months ago, I bought the boilers with flues for just under £600 each at B & Q and the labour was completed in 4 hours on 1 job and 3 hours on the other at a cost of £400 plus VAT each including the landlords gas safety certificate. I notice that you need a new 22mm supply pipe to be run from the gas mains to the boiler but would have thought £200 should have covered that.

A Baxi Boiler may have been about £200 dearer at the most but you can check out the prices online and ask for a quote for fitting only. The only downside is if something goes wrong with the boiler within the guarantee period, then a service agreement should cover any problems and be included for the first year by the boiler manufacturer.

Gassafe/Corgi Engineers are well qualified and must always be used for boiler installations but in my opinion, many of them charge too much. Even if the engineer buys the boiler and charges you full list price (instead of trade price that you could get yourself) I would expect to pay no more than £1400 to £1600 for boiler, pipe and labour.

Just try your luck and get some more quotes, it only costs a few phone calls

    Cloverfield:

First of all, Corgi has been replaced by http://www.gassaferegister.co.uk/

You need on of them so it will cost what you are quoted. Obviously get a few quotes. I think you need to budget at least £2000, maybe more. If you are replacing a non-combi with a combi there will be plumbing mods to do as well.

Re: New boiler costs??? Advice please

£600 for a new boiler - check on sites like screwfix.com and make sure that, if the old one wasn't powerful enough then the new one is.

Other parts will cost under £50. The time will be an afternoon plus however long it takes to fit the new pipe. If the route is an easy one, it will take a couple of hours to fit. Remember though that if you fit copper pipe outside and in a position that is visible to a lot of people, it will be stolen one day so it is not always a good idea to just put it wherever is easiest to fit. I replaced a pipe of a similar length that had been stolen. The new pipe went through two walls and under the floor. I think the total price was £100 or £150.

For any gas work, you need to use a corgi registered engineer and you can contact a few local ones through trustcorgi.com.

    New boiler costs??? Advice please

    Hi Everyone

I live in a 2 bedroom detached house, and the old boiler died yesterday and and i've been told that I need a new one because the old one is unusable, dangerous infact and was actually turned off. Can someone give me an idea of how much they reckon the following works would cost please?

    Taking out the old boiler

    - Fitting a New Baxi Platinum combi boiler with vertical flue

    - Repiping because the old pipe is only 15mm (if that means anything) so a new 22mm piping has to be installed from the gas mains to the new boiler, and it's about 12-15metres (complete guess btw) between the gas mains to where the boiler is located inside the house.

    - Labour and parts etc

Thank you in advance for your advice!
