    Hi Magpie,

What I would do now is google 'trading standards' and contact the nearest office to where you live and seek their advice. IMO the time you've spent being 'nice and reasonable' has long gone.

    Regards,

Can I get the money back from a dodgy second hand car?

    Hiya!

I brought a car on the 19th April from a car dealer for £650. The dealer agreed to do some work on the car such as touching up some of the paint work and we agreed to pick it up the following Friday 24th expecting it all to be done. When my boyfriend arrived, only one out of the four things had been done but since we were keen to get it back and we live an hour away, we took it anyway. On the Sunday, the car wouldn't start so we had to jump start it and drive it to a mechanic friend who said the battery was completely dead and said there was also another fault which he would need to investigate. I called the dealer on the Tuesday and explained the situation and told him that the other problem still hadn't been found. At no point did he say to return the car to him. The problem wasn't diagnosed until the Thursday 30th by which point, the dealer said to return the car to him and he would have his mechanic carry out the work cheaper than what our friend had quoted us. The dealer was supposed to pick up the car from our mechanic friend on Friday the 1st but when I called him the following day, he said he hadn't had a chance to get it. Due to the Bank Holiday he didn't pick it up until Tuesday 5th May. He avoided several of our calls during the week and when we eventually managed to get hold of him, he said we could pick it up today Friday 8th May. When my boyfriend went to pick it up, he found it still wasn't working and had to rev the engine to start it and even then it shut down anyway. He asked for the money back as after 3 weeks we are fed up with all the problems, I need the a car for work and from what I understand after 28 days we don't have any rights?

He is refusing to give us the money back but has said he will do the work but I just dont trust him anymore and want the money back. As well as this, he wont give me any of the paper work for the work he has already done as his mechanic (who I believe is his son) has done the work cash in hand which from what I believe is illegal anyway.

Am I entitled to get my money back, and if not, am I not entitled to the paper work for the work he is doing? I'm sorry it's a bit of a long one but it's my first car....:-(
