My partner has a toshiba and myself an asus. Both are good but i hate vista and would rather be using xp (in my opinion a better operating system as vista is like a nanny state!)

If you want the best buy a Mac and get a decent operating system. So long as you don't want to play lots of games I'd recommend them anytime (and I've got both sorts).

I have a Toshiba and its never caused me any problems and I do about as much as you on it. My dad is really good with technology makes and obviously Sony is really good but can be expensive too. In my opinion Toshiba is good brand without being too dear. I have TV etc too
