Re: What type of insurance is required?

Thanks for this. I've already contacted the DVLA, sent them pictures etc. According to them the vehicle category is cast in stone at first registration and cannot be altered except for conversion under some form of alteration for a disability - which would only then be from a van to a car categrory, not the way I want to go. It took the DVLA over 4 weeks to tell me this though.

I shallcontact my insurers though - good idea. It then puts the onus on them.

Bob if I were you I would take a photograph of the vehicle (proving it is a van) and send together with a copy of the registration document and an explanatary letter to your insurers. Obviously keep any correspondence for your files. That way everything is above board and covered for the future by their decision.

It may also be an idea to send a photo together with a photocopy of the manufacturers handboook which presumably describes the vehicle as a van to the DVLA and suggest that maybe a mistake was made on the initial registration document between themselves and whoever provided the vehicle for the AA.

    Good luck.

What type of insurance is required?

I purchased what I thought was a 2003 VW Transporter VAN in January this year (an ex 'AA' one). However when the registration documents returned from the DVLA I noted that the VAN was actually listed as a 'DIESEL CAR'. I had in the meantime insured the vehicle as a van, since I had assumed it to be in the 'Private Light Goods' taxation class. The DVLA will not change the taxation class from a car to a van since this is how the van was first registered.

So I have looked for insurance quotes to cover the vehicle as a car.Now all insurance companies consider the vehicle to be a VAN, not a car. I am not currently using it for trade purposes, though I don't exclude this in the future (currently I'm retired). I may also consider a partial conversion to a motorhome, though this will not be for a year or so.

The question is, am I covered for normal social and domestic usage for the vehicle when is is registered as a car , but insured as a van. In the event of anything happening I don't want any loopholes for an insurance company to wriggle out of paying. The vehicle was declared to the insurance company for usage for social and domestic purposes only. Am I OK?

    TIA

    Bob
