A friend of mine inherited a car from her father three years ago. She has never driven and has no intention of driving but is keeping the car in case her daughter wants to drive in the future. In the mean time myself and another friend are named drivers. However we have been charged over £700 for a 1999 Hyundai Atoz 1.01 AUTO. It seems the insurance company does not understand the concept of the legal owner not being a driver - hence she is being charged as though she has a provisional licence.
Surely there are elderly or disabled people who are in the same position. Short of making an informal agreement for one of us to become the registered owner, how can we find a more sympathetic insurance company? In fact the current one (a very well known one) stated that it may not insure at all when it is due for renewal in Mid-October now that it knows the legal owner does not (or intends to) drive.
