    Storm35,

500 units per week will mean that your annual consumption stands at about 26,000 unit p/year (not taking into account seasonal factors). This is 5500units higher than the UK average of 20500kwh.

According to our calculations, and taking the assumptions that you pay by monthly direct debit (MDD) on their standard tariff, this level of consumpution should amount to about £780 p/year NOT £1144.

There may be several reasons for this sudden increase in your energy bill but it is definitely something you should continue to investigate.

A possible explanation is that British Gas set your original MDD too low for your level of consumption. If this is the case, your energy supplier may have carried out a reassessment (this is usually done every 6-months) to monitor your payments against consumption. If you haven't been paying enough to cover your level of consumption, then you may now be facing 'back charges' in order to recover the energy debt that has built up.

If you would like to send me your personal contact details to my email address (scott.byrom AT moneysupermarket.com), i will get one of my contacts to get in touch with you in order to help resolve the matter.

    Kind regards,

    Scott Byrom

Hi again. I just replied to your other post, but, just to add, you can take meter readings yourself, and use those and your statements (which ought to include a few proper readings as well as estimated ones) to calculate your actual use.

Again, please try not to worry too much. The CAB can help you.
