Hi --- If there is a mistake on your file, you cannot simply ask for it to be corrected by the reference agency itself.

You must firstly contact the organisation that provided the incorrect information to the credit reference agency (RBOS), to ascertain that the information is incorrect and get their written agreement, or write to RBOS and ask it to correct any incorrect details about you and to inform the credit reference agencies. Yourself or RBOS, would then have to forward that written agreement that it is incorrect, along with a factual explanation for that reference agency to correct any wrong or misleading information that is held about you. The credit agencies addresses are below.

Default from Royal Bank of Scotland appeared on my credit report after 6 yrs

I went to the bank to apply for a mortgage with my husband and was refused as l had a default on my record with the Royal Bank of Scotland for £1200.

The date on the report was 1999 and the gentleman at the bank was quite surprised as this was over 6 years ago.

I remember having this debt in 1999 but am sure it was paid off. I have ransacked the house but cannot find any record of this or any old bank statements (think l threw them away) as l was certain l would not need them anymore!

I had not heard from the Royal Bank of Scotland in all this time about any debt never mind that they were recording a default against me and l have been at the same address as l was in 1999 when l got into debt with them.

I have checked experian tonight to get the address for RBOS and notice that the date has changed from 1999 to Nov 2006.

Where do l stand legally on this and what should l do about it?

Any help would be really appreciated.
