Companies offers Car Insurance with Indian driving License

    Hi All,

I have valid Indian driving License but its not international license. I am in UK now almost for 10 months. I understand that I can drive for first 1 year with Indian Driving License. I am applying for Prov. License very soon and followed by driving test.

I would like to know, which Insurance company can offer me insurance with Indian Driving Licence?

Which is the cheapest as I am taking used car?

License number is requied for taking Insurance?

what is difference between comprehensive and 3rd party? which is recommended for used cars?

    Thanks
    Yogi

Re: Companies offers Car Insurance with Indian driving License

To my knowledge there is no-one who will insure a non-UK driving license holder. You will be asked how long you have held a UK driver's license if you apply for one, and if you state the length of time you have held your Indian license, you will be commiting an act of fraud and your insurance will not be valid. There are a few insurers who will insure on an International License, but not on a non-EU license.

Comprehensive insurance means that if you have an accident and it is your fault, your car and the person you hit will be covered.

3rd party means that if you have an accident and it is your fault, only the other person will be covered and you will have to pay for your own damage and injuries.

Some insurers request a copy of your driver's license before they will issue cover.

Please comply with the UK laws here. Every time an uninsured person has an accident, it is the innocent victim who usually ends up paying for the fraud that the other person has committed. Driving is a privilege, NOT a right.

    SHARK!

For every positive action, there's an equal and opposite government plan.

    Hi Yogi,

I know that this thread is very old. I have a similar question. Did you get insurance from any of the companies for your car with your indian driving license. I hold an indian license(not IDP) and trying for an insurance. As you mentioned none of the companies offer insurance. Did you get it from any of the insurers.

Plz help. I am planning to get a uk license soon.

    Thanks.

    Hi

You could try Direct Line and see what they say. I am doubtful but their website appears to give out possibility of covering some foreign licence holders.

I think holders of Indian Driver licences have to pass a UK car test within 12 months of being in UK to continue legally driving here. As India is not a designated country for the DVLA purposes, you cannot just swap licences apparently. I think this is because the standard of driving test in the foreign country must be equivalent to the UK test.

This the UK government site regarding foreign licences.

You can get cover through a local broker with Norwich Union / Aviva, bear in mind it might be best to declare you have a provisional licence as your International Licence will become invalid soon and you will be relying on a provisional licence
