Our Expert Says...

Scottish and Southern's Fair Pricing Policy means they will hold off putting up energy prices for as long as possible and will try to bring them down as quickly as possible.

Southern Electric (SSE) supplies 9 million energy customers comprising of 5.53 million electricity customers and 3.47 million gas customers. They generated the most renewable electricity in the UK compared with the other 5 major suppliers, from 1 April 2007 to 31 March 2008. They are one of the leading energy companies in the UK and the country's second largest energy supplier, ranking 23rd in the FTSE 100 on 31 March 2009.

No gas used ---bill over £1200!!!

Added 10/11/2009, reviewed by anonymous (west sussex)

Supplier Ratings

I received a bill of £1200 for gas in a time when never used any gas . ... this was followed up by a second bill for over £250 for next period and again no gas was used as have oil. After protesting these bill were cancelled . Apparently their meter readings or meter inputing proceedures is completely erroneous.

Too expensive or inaccurate charges

Added 03/11/2009, reviewed by Victor (Winslow)

Supplier Ratings

Despite being only moderate users we appear to be paying nearly twice as much as near neighbours (we pay £85 p.m. for gas and £65 p.m. for electricity). By going on to moneysupermarket.com I now discover that I could have been saving about £240 p.a. from my current supplier - if they had chosen to tell me about their more favourable tariffs. Yet another example of a supplier having absolutely no loyalty towards its existing customers. Southern Electric has recently chosen to upgrade my gas meter - which makes me wonder if they thought the readings were inaccurately high - they told me the engineer would be with me in the morning when, according to the engineer, they knew full well that he had a large job on over 30 miles away!

Great service but too expensive

Supplier Ratings

Been with Southern Electric for 4 years now and the customer service has been fantastic throughout. Never had any issues whatsoever. Back then they were the cheapest on dual fuel but lately they have lagged behind on price. So I have taken the plunge and switched to EDF which will save me over £150/year. Their service level seems decent too so should be trouble free. If Southern electric get competitive again I will go back to them but in the meantime........EDF show me what you got!! p.s. £30 cashback for switching helps too!

Great Service for the first year

Supplier Ratings

Door Sales rep great, makes you want to become a customer. Low monthly DD to start with. They then try and double it after a couple of years. Going to to try quarterly payments by DD, that's the full bill on demand, as advised by money advisor, I will retain monthly DDs in my bank account, and pay my bill in full every three months that way I'm in charge of my money. If it doesn't work will change to a cheaper supplier, which I'm still considering. I'm checking other suppliers carefully and taking my time, reading reviews etc. Some charge between £30 and £50 cancellation fee in the first year so I want to get it right.

Generally good

Supplier Ratings

Over 10 years I've been with two excellent companies that went bankrupt! The first handed over to NPower (read the reviews before signing!). the second handed over to Southern (very good but prices creep up faster than inflation). Since 1999 1'm paying 20% more for my gas (good) and 120% more for electricity (reflecting the disgraceful lack of an energy policy by tweedle dee and tweedle dum) than originally. Above average customer service - this is what usually lets organisations down. Changing to paperless billing meant no gas bills, watch out for sudden increases in monthly debit (but they'll return it to a sensible level if you ask them), and they could be more prompt in passing on falling prices to consumers. Not the cheapest, but in my opinion, the most hassle-free.
