Our Expert Says...

Scottish and Southern's Fair Pricing Policy means they will hold off putting up energy prices for as long as possible and will try to bring them down as quickly as possible.

Scottish Hydro (SSE) supplies 9 million energy customers comprising of 5.53 million electricity customers and 3.47 million gas customers. They generated the most renewable electricity in the UK compared with the other 5 major suppliers, from 1 April 2007 to 31 March 2008. They are one of the leading energy companies in the UK and the country's second largest energy supplier, ranking 23rd in the FTSE 100 on 31 March 2009.

NO major problems

Supplier Ratings

Prices rose while we were on them, and noone rang to offer us a cheaper option when our deal ran out, but otherwise fine. I liked being able to text in the meter readings - very handy. They just are not the cheapest provider any more, so here's hoping the next one will be as good...

no real problems

Supplier Ratings

I have been SHE for 3+ years and not had any real problems. Have listened when I queried bills and I find them much less aggressive than Scottish Power. Website is not great, slow to accept meter readings and generate updated bills but otherwise ok. If I have to phone I usually get through in good time (British call centre, in fact often a Scottish voice). This spring they did try to increase my monthly fixed DD by letter, but I phoned to dispute the amounts and made a card payment online (I was around £40 behind) so they didn't have a leg to stand on, and they haven't tried since. Over this summer I got ahead (£100 in credit) so I phoned and asked for it back, got no hassle and it was back in my bank in 5days. Overall quite happy.

Too expensive for little service

Supplier Ratings

Been with same supplier for a while my expensive mistake. Can't believe how much I have just saved in 5 minutes. They just keep putting prices up and give no incentive to stay.

what a joke

Supplier Ratings

Payment options are plentiful, customer service try and understand your problems but thats about it. Took two years for them to come to my house and get an accurate meter reading, bills were all over estimated. Then every so often we would get astronomical bills and debt letters sent asking for payment immediately or they were forcibully entering my house to cut off my supply. there answer when I said I never recieved the bills you claim was sent, I was told to speak to the Post Office, I've had enough, maybe this is a one off because they mostly do get a good write up, but I've just this minute changed supplier as I'm sick of dealing with them. Onto British Gas who I started with 8yrs ago, hoping they are better.

Too Expensive

Added 10/06/2009, reviewed by Jacqueline (Edinburgh)

Supplier Ratings

I found Scottish Hydro Electric to be far to expensive! There are 3 of us living in the house meaning we use a fair amount of hot water and heating and the charges were rediculously high! We nearly had a heart attack when the latest bill came in!! We are changing supplier immediately!
