Our Expert Says...

They don't come much greener than 'Good Energy' - the only provider to supply 100% of their energy from renewable sources. Although their prices are not as competitive as the 'BIG 6', these guys are really in it for the environment and pledge to replace every unit of energy used by their customers with a unit of energy from renewable sources – wind, small-scale hydro and solar.

Established and in 1999, and owned by the Monkton Group – owners of the UK''s first Wind Farm, Good Energy have over 21,000 customers across the UK and are the only provider to supply ALL of their electricity from renewable sources – wind, small-scale hydro and solar power. Good Energy have received many awards for their contribution to ''green'' energy, including: Green Award Winner 2006, Ethical Company Organisation''s GOOD Shopping Guide 2006 – 100%, Triodos Woman in Ethical Business Award 2006 and the Ashden Award 2006 for Sustainable Energy. Heavily involved in facilitating micro-generation schemes, Good Energy pay people to generate electricity through small renewable generators. For every unit used by each of their customers, Good Energy pledge to supply the national grid with a unit of energy from renewable sources.

Bad customer service

Supplier Ratings

We joint Good Energy for their ethos, ( the energy rate is more expensive ) but I must say, that after 4 months we have had enough of them. Their customer service is awful and almost inexistent. Since we signed in with them, four months ago, we haven't recieved yet a single piece of information like account number. We have asked them several times for bills,( flatmates moving in and out) but we are being ignored. They say is the previous supplier's fault, but we changed gas suppliers at the same time to EDF and everything is being smooth with them. They only way to contact them is through an 0845 number that costs a lot and you they are completely useless. I would't recommend them.

Very unprofessional & unethical service.

Supplier Ratings

I changed to Good Energy for ethical reasons even though they cost considerably more than other companies. I am now changing because of their appalling service. They billed us incorrectly for Economy 7 and despite numerous phone calls and letters refused to give us a corrected bill. Went to Ombudsman in the end when they did send a corrected bill after one year! Still not right but paying and running as far from them as possible. Customer services sound polite but in reality extremely inefficient. If you have a problem with them don't expect them to be able to sort it out without the help of the Ombudsman, even then they won't get it right. They give those of us who are professional, environmentally responsible and ethical a very bad reputation.

great company, shame about price

Supplier Ratings

we have been with good energy for 4 years but have just switched to another green tarif because of price, when we originally switched to good energy the difference between good energy and non green tarifs was a couple of quid per month, now this is about 30 pounds per month (for non green deals) and 20 pounds for the best green deals (scottish energy H2O). We would like to go back to good energy but they need to be come closer to other green deals in terms of price.

Poor Administration

Supplier Ratings

I was with Good Energy up until two years ago, so things may have changed since then. I chose them for the obvious green reasons. The first problem I noticed was that they charged so much on my monthly direct debit, that my account was getting further and further in credit, despite using proper readings, not estimates. When I asked if my direct debit could be reduced, they said it couldn't be changed until the end of the year, when they would revue my annual usage. I was paying £90.00/month at the time, just for electricity and my account reached just under £500.00 in credit. To make matter worse they double charged me on more than one occasion, causing me to exceed my overdraft limit and incur bank charges.
