Miles Davis - Miles Electric: A Different Kind Of Blue
On August 29th, 1970 Miles Davis and his band played to 600,000 people at The Isle Of Wight Festival. When asked the title of his one track set, Miles said Call It Anything. This documentary dramatizes the difficult transition Miles went through during his change to an electric period in the face of extremely negative reactions from the jazz establishment. It includes in depth interviews and musical tributes from many of his sidemen and other musicians including Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Carlos Santana, Joni Mitchell, Keith Jarrett and Dave Liebman; features excerpts from many of his classic performances including Bitches Brew and culminates in the legendary full 38 minute concert from the Isle of Wight.

Solo performer: Chick Corea (piano). Recorded at Mad Hatter Studios, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by Chick Corea. Lush Life was nominated for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards. EXPRESSIONS is an elegant album of solo jazz piano at its best. Chick Corea performs 12 standards and 2 originals with grace, drama and passion, expressing himself while acknowledging his wealth of influences. To hear Chick do a Strayhorn standard is to hear a master at play. His technical facility is beyond superlatives; he is free to match the beauty of these songs with the beauty of his instrument. Corea honors the masters by stepping into Monk's swagger on Panhonica and Monk's Mood, and by bouncing through Bud Powell's Oblivion. He also pays homage to Art Tatum, to whom EXPRESSIONS is dedicated, with Blues For Art. Yet for all of these references and acknowledgements, Corea's own eloquent and inimitable voice stands clear. His arrangements are logical, his lines deliberate. Melodies are presented in sublime, lyrical beauty. At times Corea plays with his own sense of harmony, exhibiting enough poise and patience to let the listeners' ears digest some of the richer ideas. One of the more electrifying spots on EXPRESSIONS is where the pianist takes the standard, I Want To Be Happy. Maintaining a driving ostinato with his left hand, he spins melody and color with his right, infusing the song with stunning twists and surprises. This is how jazz piano should sound.

Buddy Rich - BUDDY RICH JUST SINGS
While Buddy Rich earned his fame behind a drum set, his early career included work as a singer. Contrary to what his humorous concert announcements suggest, his voice is warm and mellow, showing his devotion to Lena Horne, Billy Eckstine and Frank Sinatra. The 2 LPs contained here – ‘Buddy Rich Just Sings’ (1957) and ‘The Voice Is Rich!’ (1959) were his first full vocal albums, and are presented here in an excellent two-fer from the jazz legend.
